Human p8 Is a HMG-I/Y-like Protein with DNA Binding Activity Enhanced by Phosphorylation
We have studied the biochemical features, the conformational preferences in solution, and the DNA binding properties of human p8 (hp8), a nucleoprotein whose expression is affected during acute pancreatitis. Biochemical studies show that hp8 has properties of the high mobility group proteins, HMG-I/Y. Structural studies have been carried out by using circular dichroism (near- and far-ultraviolet), Fourier transform infrared, and NMR spectroscopies. All the biophysical probes indicate that hp8 is monomeric (up to 1 mM concentration) and partially unfolded in solution. The protein seems to bind DNA weakly, as shown by electrophoretic gel shift studies. On the other hand, hp8 is a substrate for protein kinase A (PKA). The phosphorylated hp8 (PKAhp8) has a higher content of secondary structure than the nonphosphorylated protein, as concluded by Fourier transform infrared studies. PKAhp8 binds DNA strongly, as shown by the changes in circular dichroism spectra, and gel shift analysis. Thus, although there is not a high sequence homology with HMG-I/Y proteins, hp8 can be considered as a HMG-I/Y-like protein.Fil:Mallo, G.V. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Reconstrucción de la vegetación asociada al depósito tobáceo fluvial holoceno del nogal de el batán, las parras del martín, cordillera ibérica
Development of Quaternary fluvial tufa buildings are often associated with warm and humid phases and are commonly used as climate indicators. El Nogal de El Batán Holocene fluvial tufa buildup, located in Las Parras River valley (Iberian Range, NE Spain), is investigated, following radiocarbon dating, stratigraphic description and palynological analysis. The studied deposit, 8.2 m-thick, is formed of gravels, phytoclast rudstones, calcite- coated stem boundstones and fine carbonate deposits (sands, silts and marls) with peaty horizons and carbonaceous debris. It has been dated within the upper early Holocene (ca. 8400 cal BP) and correlated with the environmental changes reconstructed for the region, identifying at least, three main phases. Pollen results highlight the existence of a conifer landscape, mainy dominated by Pinus nigra/sylvestris type and Juniperus, and locally dense riparian woodland with Corylus, Alnus, Salix, Populus, Celtis, Fraxinus, Tamarix and Rosaceae. Deciduous and evergreen oaks were the main spread regional forests accompanied by many warm-loving taxa like Pistacia, Rhamnus, Arbutus and Olea during the middle Holocene (ca. 8000-5000 cal BP). The transition towards the late Holocene (ca. 4300 cal BP) is evidenced by the rise of herbs and ruderal taxa, and especially the presence of coprophilous fungi, which are linked to the spread of agricultural and grazing practices along the river valley.El desarrollo de edificios tobáceos de origen fluvial se asocia a menudo con fases cálidas y húmedas cuaternarias y son comúnmente empleados como indicadores climáticos. En el presente trabajo se estudia el depósito tobáceo fluvial Holoceno del Nogal de El Batán, situado en el valle del río Las Parras (Cordillera Ibérica, NE España), bajo una perspectiva cronológica, estratigráfica y palinológica. La acumulación tobácea de 8,2 m de espesor, intercala gravas, facies de rudstones de fitoclastos, boundstones de tallos, limos y arenas de composición carbonatada, además de margas, lime mud y niveles turbosos. La acumulación tobácea se emplaza en el Holoceno temprano final (ca. 8400 cal BP) y se correlaciona con los cambios ambientales ocurridos en la región, identificando tres fases principales. Los análisis polínicos señalan un paisaje dominado por coníferas en la base de la secuencia, esencialmente con Pinus nigra/sylvestris tipo y Juniperus, mientras que localmente se desarrolla un bosque ripario donde destacan Corylus, Alnus, Salix, Populus, Celtis, Fraxinus, Tamarix y Rosaceae. En el Holoceno medio (ca. 8000-5000 cal BP) se produce la máxima expansión de las quercíneas, junto con taxones termófilos como Pistacia, Rhamnus, Arbutus y Olea. El incremento de taxones herbáceos y ruderales, y en especial la aparición de esporas coprófilas, marca la expansión agro-pastoril a lo largo del valle fluvial durante el Holoceno tardío (ca. 4300 cal BP)
Diet and Feeding Behavior of the Horned Guan (Oreophasis derbianus) in Mexico
The Horned Guan (Oreophasis derbianus) is endemic to humid montane forests of southern Mexico and Guatemala. This species is considered endangered because of their small populations, the loss and fragmentation of habitat, illegal trade, and overexploitation by subsistence hunters. We update information about the species' diet and foraging behavior by integrating the results generated during two and a half decades of research on the Horned Guan's ecology at the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve, in Chiapas, Mexico, with additional published information compiled from other areas. Based on nearly 450 hrs of direct observations of free-ranging guans and 530 discrete feeding events, we found that during the breeding season Horned Guans feed primarily on fruits from six species of plants and leaves from one species. Horned Guans were not observed eating animal matter, corroborating its specialized frugivore-folivore habits. Our study increases the known plant taxa found in the Horned Guan's diet in El Triunfo from 40 to 63 (Supplemental Material), and globally to 101 species (Supplemental Material). For 48 taxa in El Triunfo, only fruits were consumed, while for eleven taxa consumption was restricted to leaves, and to flowers for one species; for four taxa both fruits and leaves were consumed. We found significant differences between males and females in the location of foraging on trees and diet composition. Young birds are fed fruits of Citharexylum mocinnii and leaves of Solanum appendiculatum by their mothers, both of which are rare in the diet of adult males. The conservation of the Horned Guan requires the long-term protection of suitable habitat that maintains the plant species important in their diet
Evaluation of endothelial function and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with HIV infection
The aim of this study was to analyse the association between human immunodefciency virus (HIV) related clinical and analytical parameters and the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis as well as endothelial dysfunction. This was a prospective cohort study of HIV-positive patients who underwent intima media thickness (IMT) determination and coronary artery calcium scoring to determine subclinical atherosclerosis. To detect endothelial dysfunction, the breath holding index, fow-mediated dilation and the concentration of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) were measured. Patients with an IMT? 0.9 mm had an average of 559.3 ± 283.34 CD4/?l, and those with an IMT< 0.9 mm had an average of 715.4 ± 389.92 CD4/?l (p= 0.04). Patients with a low calcium score had a signifcantly higher average CD4 cell value and lower zenith viral load (VL) than those with a higher score (707.7 ± 377.5 CD4/?l vs 477.23 ± 235.7 CD4/?l (p= 0.01) and 7 ×?¬104 ± 5 ×?¬104 copies/ml vs 23.4 × 104 ± 19 × 104 copies/ml (p= 0.02)). The number of early EPCs in patients with a CD4 nadir< 350/ µl was lower than that in those with a CD4 nadir? 350 (p= 0.03). In HIV-positive patients, low CD4 cell levels and high VL were associated with risk of developing subclinical atherosclerosis. HIV patients with CD4 cell nadir < 350/µl may have fewer early EPCs
Thinning of the Monte Perdido Glacier in the Spanish Pyrenees since 1981
This paper analyzes the evolution of the Monte Perdido Glacier, the third largest glacier in the Pyrenees, from 1981 to the present. We assessed the evolution of the glacier''s surface area by analysis of aerial photographs from 1981, 1999, and 2006, and changes in ice volume by geodetic methods with digital elevation models (DEMs) generated from topographic maps (1981 and 1999), airborne lidar (2010) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014) data. We interpreted the changes in the glacier based on climate data from nearby meteorological stations. The results indicate that the degradation of this glacier accelerated after 1999. The rate of ice surface loss was almost three times greater during 1999-2006 than during earlier periods. Moreover, the rate of glacier thinning was 1.85 times faster during 1999-2010 (rate of surface elevation change = -8.98 ± 1.80 m, glacier-wide mass balance = -0.73 ± 0.14 m w.e. yr-1) than during 1981-1999 (rate of surface elevation change = -8.35 ± 2.12 m, glacier-wide mass balance = -0.42 ± 0.10 m w.e. yr-1). From 2011 to 2014, ice thinning continued at a slower rate (rate of surface elevation change = -1.93 ± 0.4 m yr-1, glacier-wide mass balance = -0.58 ± 0.36 m w.e. yr-1). This deceleration in ice thinning compared to the previous 17 years can be attributed, at least in part, to two consecutive anomalously wet winters and cool summers (2012-2013 and 2013-2014), counteracted to some degree by the intense thinning that occurred during the dry and warm 2011-2012 period. However, local climatic changes observed during the study period do not seem sufficient to explain the acceleration of ice thinning of this glacier, because precipitation and air temperature did not exhibit statistically significant trends during the study period. Rather, the accelerated degradation of this glacier in recent years can be explained by a strong disequilibrium between the glacier and the current climate, and likely by other factors affecting the energy balance (e.g., increased albedo in spring) and feedback mechanisms (e.g., heat emitted from recently exposed bedrock and debris covered areas)
Incommensurate crystal structure, thermal expansion study and magnetic properties of (dimethylimidazolium)2[Fe2Cl6(?-O)]
A thorough characterization of the title compound, (dimim)2[Fe2Cl6(µ-O)], consisting of a (µ-oxido)-bridged binuclear iron(III) complex and 1,3-dimethylimiazolium (dimim) cation, has been performed using a wide range of techniques. The room temperature disordered crystal structure of this compound transits to an incommensurately modulated crystal structure at 100 K; to our knowledge, the first one found for an imidazolium halometallate complex. The crystal structure was solved in the superspace group PĪ(/α/β/γ)0 with modulation vector q=0.1370(10) 0.0982(10) 0.326(2) at 100 K. Variable temperature synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction showed the presence of satellite peaks in addition to the main diffraction peaks up to 208 K. Furthermore, a thermal expansion study was performed with this technique from 100 to 383 K (near of its melting point) adressing questions about the nature and consequences of the ion self-assembly of this (µ-oxido)-bridged binuclear iron(III) complex, as well as the molecular motion of the imidazolium cation within the crystalline structure as a response to the temperature effect. Finally, we present a deep magnetic study based on magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and Mössbauer measurements, where the strong antiferromagnetic exchange coupling detected is due to the occurrence of a µ-oxido bridge between the Fe(III), giving rise to an intra-dimeric antiferromagnetic exchange coupling of -308 cm-1.Financial support from Universidad de Cantabria (Proyecto Puente convocatoria 2018 funded by SODERCAN_FEDER) , Universidad del País Vasco/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (GIU17/50 and PPG17/37) and Ministerio de Economia y Competividad (MAT2017-89239-C2-(1,2)-P)
Feedback and feeding in the context of galaxy evolution with SPICA: direct characterization of molecular outflows and inflows
A far-infrared observatory such as the {\it SPace Infrared telescope for
Cosmology and Astrophysics} ({\it SPICA}), with its unprecedented spectroscopic
sensitivity, would unveil the role of feedback in galaxy evolution during the
last Gyr of the Universe (), through the use of far- and
mid-infrared molecular and ionic fine structure lines that trace outflowing and
infalling gas. Outflowing gas is identified in the far-infrared through P-Cygni
line shapes and absorption blueshifted wings in molecular lines with high
dipolar moments, and through emission line wings of fine-structure lines of
ionized gas. We quantify the detectability of galaxy-scale massive molecular
and ionized outflows as a function of redshift in AGN-dominated,
starburst-dominated, and main-sequence galaxies, explore the detectability of
metal-rich inflows in the local Universe, and describe the most significant
synergies with other current and future observatories that will measure

Alu retrotransposons promote differentiation of human carcinoma cells through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor
Cell differentiation is a central process in development and in cancer growth and dissemination. OCT4 (POU5F1) and NANOG are essential for cell stemness and pluripotency; yet, the mechanisms that regulate their expression remain largely unknown. Repetitive elements account for almost half of the Human Genome; still, their role in gene regulation is poorly understood. Here, we show that the dioxin receptor (AHR) leads to differentiation of human carcinoma cells through the transcriptional upregulation of Alu retrotransposons, whose RNA transcripts
can repress pluripotency genes. Despite the genome-wide presence of Alu elements, we provide evidences that those located at the NANOG and OCT4 promoters bind AHR, are transcribed by RNA polymerase-III and repress NANOG and OCT4 in differentiated cells. OCT4 and NANOG repression likely involves processing of Alu-derived transcripts through the miRNA machinery involving the Microprocessor and RISC. Consistently, stable AHR knockdown led to basal undifferentiation, impaired Alus transcription and blockade of OCT4 and NANOG repression. We suggest that transcripts produced from AHR-regulated Alu retrotransposons may control the
expression of stemness genes OCT4 and NANOG during differentiation of carcinoma cells. The control of discrete Alu elements by specific transcription factors may have a dynamic role in genome regulation under physiological and diseased conditions.Trabajo financiado por:

On The GeV & TeV Detections of the Starburst Galaxies M82 & NGC 253
The GeV and TeV emission from M82 and NGC 253 observed by Fermi, HESS, and
VERITAS constrains the physics of cosmic rays (CRs) in these dense starbursts.
We argue that the gamma rays are predominantly hadronic in origin, as expected
by previous studies. The measured fluxes imply that pionic losses are efficient
for CR protons in both galaxies: we show that a fraction F_cal ~ 0.2 - 0.4 of
the energy injected in high energy primary CR protons is lost to inelastic
proton-proton collisions (pion production) before escape, producing gamma rays,
neutrinos, and secondary electrons and positrons. We discuss the factor ~2
uncertainties in this estimate, including supernova rate and leptonic
contributions to the GeV-TeV emission. We argue that gamma-ray data on ULIRGs
like Arp 220 can test whether M82 and NGC 253 are truly calorimetric, and we
present upper limits on Arp 220 from the Fermi data. We show that the observed
ratio of the GeV to GHz fluxes of the starbursts suggests that non-synchrotron
cooling processes are important for cooling the CR electron/positron
population. We briefly reconsider previous predictions in light of the
gamma-ray detections, including the starburst contribution to the gamma-ray
background and CR energy densities. Finally, as a guide for future studies, we
list the brightest star-forming galaxies on the sky and present updated
