Are you Charlie or Ahmed? Cultural pluralism in Charlie Hebdo response on Twitter
We study the response to the Charlie Hebdo shootings of January 7, 2015 on
Twitter across the globe. We ask whether the stances on the issue of freedom of
speech can be modeled using established sociological theories, including
Huntington's culturalist Clash of Civilizations, and those taking into
consideration social context, including Density and Interdependence theories.
We find support for Huntington's culturalist explanation, in that the
established traditions and norms of one's "civilization" predetermine some of
one's opinion. However, at an individual level, we also find social context to
play a significant role, with non-Arabs living in Arab countries using
#JeSuisAhmed ("I am Ahmed") five times more often when they are embedded in a
mixed Arab/non-Arab (mention) network. Among Arabs living in the West, we find
a great variety of responses, not altogether associated with the size of their

Genetic-substructure and complex demographic history of South African Bantu speakers
South Eastern Bantu-speaking (SEB) groups constitute more than 80% of the population in South Africa. Despite clear linguistic and geographic diversity, the genetic differences between these groups have not been systematically investigated. Based on genome-wide data of over 5000 individuals, representing eight major SEB groups, we provide strong evidence for fine-scale population structure that broadly aligns with geographic distribution and is also congruent with linguistic phylogeny (separation of Nguni, Sotho-Tswana and Tsonga speakers). Although differential Khoe-San admixture plays a key role, the structure persists after Khoe-San ancestry-masking. The timing of admixture, levels of sex-biased gene flow and population size dynamics also highlight differences in the demographic histories of individual groups. The comparisons with five Iron Age farmer genomes further support genetic continuity over ∼400 years in certain regions of the country. Simulated trait genome-wide association studies further show that the observed population structure could have major implications for biomedical genomics research in South Africa
Down-Regulation of hsa-miR-10a in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia CD34+ Cells Increases USF2-Mediated Cell Growth
MicroRNAs (miRNA) are small noncoding,
single-stranded RNAs that inhibit gene expression at a
posttranscriptional level, whose abnormal expression
has been described in different tumors. The aim of our
study was to identify miRNAs potentially implicated
in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). We detected an
abnormal miRNA expression profile in mononuclear and
CD34+ cells from patients with CML compared with
healthy controls. Of 157 miRNAs tested, hsa-miR-10a,
hsa-miR-150, and hsa-miR-151 were down-regulated,
whereas hsa-miR-96 was up-regulated in CML cells.
Down-regulation of hsa-miR-10a was not dependent
on BCR-ABL1 activity and contributed to the increased
cell growth of CML cells. We identified the upstream
stimulatory factor 2 (USF2) as a potential target of
hsa-miR-10a and showed that overexpression of USF2
also increases cell growth. The clinical relevance of
these findings was shown in a group of 85 newly
diagnosed patients with CML in which expression of
hsa-miR-10a was down-regulated in 71% of the patients,
whereas expression of USF2 was up-regulated in 60% of
the CML patients, with overexpression of USF2 being
significantly associated with decreased expression of
hsa-miR-10a (P = 0.004). Our results indicate that
down-regulation of hsa-miR-10a may increase USF2 and
contribute to the increase in cell proliferation of CML
implicating a miRNA in the abnormal behavior of CML
Nutrition, diet and immunosenescence
Ageing is characterized by immunosenescence and the progressive decline in immunity in association with an increased frequency of infections and chronic disease. This complex process affects both the innate and adaptive immune systems with a progressive decline in most immune cell populations and defects in activation resulting in loss of function. Although host genetics and environmental factors, such as stress, exercise and diet can impact on the onset or course of immunosenescence, the mechanisms involved are largely unknown. This review focusses on identifying the most significant aspects of immunosenescence and on the evidence that nutritional intervention might delay this process, and consequently improve the quality of life of the elderly
Premissas para a compreensão da saúde dos trabalhadores no setor serviço
O setor serviço ou terciário responde atualmente por mais de dois terços do PIB nos paÃses desenvolvidos e, no Brasil, emprega cerca de três quartos da população economicamente ativa. Muitos autores consideram que esse fenômeno expressa uma transição da sociedade industrial para a sociedade de serviços. Entretanto, os estudos sobre a saúde do trabalhador, mesmo atentos à s mutações tecnológicas e à reestruturação produtiva, não se aprofundam suficientemente no conhecimento das caracterÃsticas do setor serviço, persistindo em referências aos processos industriais. O presente ensaio tem por objetivo analisar determinados conceitos sobre os processos de trabalho no setor serviço considerados importantes para compreensão da saúde dos trabalhadores desse setor. Formula-se a hipótese da proximidade entre trabalhador e consumidor como uma das principais caracterÃsticas das relações de trabalho desse setor com possibilidades de repercussões especÃficas nos processos saúde e doença. Sob essa perspectiva de análise são incorporados os conceitos de simultaneidade, co-presença, co-produção, autosserviço e gestão emocional. Conclui-se que essas peculiaridades, além de permitirem uma compreensão mais adequada do processo saúde/doença dos trabalhadores no setor serviço, indicam a necessidade da construção de uma nova interface entre a saúde do trabalhador e as práticas emergentes de proteção à saúde do consumidor.At the present time the service sector is responsible for over two thirds of the GNP in developed countries and, in Brazil, it employs nearly 75% of the economically active population. Many authors view this phenomenon as a manifestation of the transition from industrial society to a service society. Yet, in spite of considering technological changes and the restructuring of production, studies on workers' health do not search far enough for a comprehension of the characteristics of the service sector, basically keeping to references to industrial processes. The present study analyzes specific concepts related to work processes in the service sector, which are considered important for an understanding of workers' health in this sector. This analysis puts forward the hypothesis that worker-consumer physical proximity is one of the main characteristics of work relations in that sector, leading to potential impacts on health and disease processes. From this perspective, the concepts of simultaneousness, co-presence, co-production, self-service and emotional management are incorporated. Such peculiarities, besides allowing a better understanding of workers' health/illness processes in the service sector, point to the need to create a new interface between workers' health and the emerging consumer health protection practices
Dynamic configuration of the CMS Data Acquisition cluster
The CMS Data Acquisition cluster, which runs around 10000 applications, is configured dynamically at run time. XML configuration documents determine what applications are executed on each node and over what networks these applications communicate. Through this mechanism the DAQ System may be adapted to the required performance, partitioned in order to perform (test-) runs in parallel, or re-structured in case of hardware faults. This paper presents the CMS DAQ Configurator tool, which is used to generate comprehensive configurations of the CMS DAQ system based on a high-level description given by the user. Using a database of configuration templates and a database containing a detailed model of hardware modules, data and control links, nodes and the network topology, the tool automatically determines which applications are needed, on which nodes they should run, and over which networks the event traffic will flow. The tool computes application parameters and generates the XML configuration documents as well as the configuration of the run-control system. The performance of the tool and operational experience during CMS commissioning and the first LHC runs are discussed

Modelling and prediction of cavitation erosion in GDi injectors operated with E100 fuel
Ethanol (E100) can be utilised in spark ignition engines for passenger car vehicles. This brings a challenge to the durability of the fuel injection system components since its use can result in corrosion, further enhanced by cavitation-induced erosion. This work reports computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions for both the flow development and the locations prone to cavitation erosion in multi-hole gasoline direct injection (GDi) injectors operated with E100. The compressible form of the Navier–Stokes equations is solved numerically considering the motion of the injector's needle valve. Thermodynamic and mechanical equilibrium is assumed between the liquid, vapour and non-condensable gas; E100 liquid and vapour are considered as a barotropic fluids where the corresponding variation in density with pressure and the speed of sound are estimated via a relevant equation of state; an additional transport equation is solved for simulating the non-condensable air entrainment into the injector during the dwell time between successive injections. Turbulence is modelled using both large eddy simulation (LES) and Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) considering a sector and the full nozzle geometry, respectively. Various cavitation erosion indices reported in the literature are evaluated against new durability tests of surface erosion damage obtained after 400 M injection cycles. The relevant nozzle wall erosion images are found to correlate well with the accumulated erosive power predicted from the computational model
