    The commercial Nao humanoid robot has 11 DOF in legs. Even if these legs include 12 revolute joints, only 11 actuators are employed to control the walking of the robot. Under such conditions, the mobility of the pelvis and that of the oscillating foot are mutually constrained at each step. Besides, the original gait provided by the manufacturer company of the Nao employs only single support phases during the walking. Because of both issues, the reduced mobility in legs and the use of only single support phases, the stability of the walking is affected. To contribute to improving such stability, in this paper an approach is proposed that incorporates a double support phase and a gait based on cycloidal time functions for motions of the pelvis and those of the oscillating foot. To assess the stability of the walking an index is applied, which is based on the notion of zero-moment point (ZMP) of the static foot at each step. Results of experimental tests show that the proposed gait enhances the stability of the robot during the walking

    Calcineurin splicing variant calcineurin Aβ1 improves cardiac function after myocardial infarction without inducing hypertrophy

    BACKGROUND: Calcineurin is a calcium-regulated phosphatase that plays a major role in cardiac hypertrophy. We previously described that alternative splicing of the calcineurin Aβ (CnAβ) gene generates the CnAβ1 isoform, with a unique C-terminal region that is different from the autoinhibitory domain present in all other CnA isoforms. In skeletal muscle, CnAβ1 is necessary for myoblast proliferation and stimulates regeneration, reducing fibrosis and accelerating the resolution of inflammation. Its role in the heart is currently unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: We generated transgenic mice overexpressing CnAβ1 in postnatal cardiomyocytes under the control of the ι-myosin heavy chain promoter. In contrast to previous studies using an artificially truncated calcineurin, CnAβ1 overexpression did not induce cardiac hypertrophy. Moreover, transgenic mice showed improved cardiac function and reduced scar formation after myocardial infarction, with reduced neutrophil and macrophage infiltration and decreased expression of proinflammatory cytokines. Immunoprecipitation and Western blot analysis showed interaction of CnAβ1 with the mTOR complex 2 and activation of the Akt/SGK cardioprotective pathway in a PI3K-independent manner. In addition, gene expression profiling revealed that CnAβ1 activated the transcription factor ATF4 downstream of the Akt/mTOR pathway to promote the amino acid biosynthesis program, to reduce protein catabolism, and to induce the antifibrotic and antiinflammatory factor growth differentiation factor 15, which protects the heart through Akt activation. CONCLUSIONS: Calcineurin Aβ1 shows a unique mode of action that improves cardiac function after myocardial infarction, activating different cardioprotective pathways without inducing maladaptive hypertrophy.     Follistatin-like 3 mediates paracrine fibroblast activation by cardiomyocytes

    Follistatins are extracellular inhibitors of the TGF-β family ligands including activin A, myostatin and bone morphogenetic proteins. Follistatin-like 3 (FSTL3) is a potent inhibitor of activin signalling and antagonises the cardioprotective role of activin A in the heart. FSTL3 expression is elevated in patients with heart failure and is upregulated in cardiomyocytes by hypertrophic stimuli, but its role in cardiac remodelling is largely unknown. Here, we show that the production of FSTL3 by cardiomyocytes contributes to the paracrine activation of cardiac fibroblasts, inducing changes in cell adhesion, promoting proliferation and increasing collagen production. We found that FSTL3 is necessary for this response and for the induction of cardiac fibrosis. However, full activation requires additional factors, and we identify connective tissue growth factor as a FSTL3 binding partner in this process.     The Calcineurin Variant CnAβ1 Controls Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation by Directing mTORC2 Membrane Localization and Activation

    Embryonic stem cells (ESC) have the potential to generate all the cell lineages that form the body. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ESC differentiation and especially the role of alternative splicing in this process remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the alternative splicing regulator MBNL1 promotes generation of the atypical calcineurin Aβ variant CnAβ1 in mouse ESCs (mESC). CnAβ1 has a unique C-terminal domain that drives its localization mainly to the Golgi apparatus by interacting with Cog8. CnAβ1 regulates the intracellular localization and activation of the mTORC2 complex. CnAβ1 knockdown results in delocalization of mTORC2 from the membrane to the cytoplasm, inactivation of the AKT/GSK3β/β-catenin signaling pathway, and defective mesoderm specification.     Measurement of the Lifetime Difference in the B_s^0 System

    We present a study of the decay B_s^0 -> J/psi phi We obtain the CP-odd fraction in the final state at time zero, R_perp = 0.16 +/- 0.10 (stat) +/- 0.02 (syst), the average lifetime of the (B_s, B_sbar) system, tau (B_s^0) =1.39^{+0.13}_{-0.16} (stat) ^{+0.01}_{-0.02} (syst) ps, and the relative width difference between the heavy and light mass eigenstates, Delta Gamma/Gamma = (Gamma_L - Gamma_H)/Gamma =0.24^{+0.28}_{-0.38} (stat) ^{+0.03}_{-0.04} (syst). With the additional constraint from the world average of the B_s^0$lifetime measurements using semileptonic decays, we find tau (B_s^0)= 1.39 +/- 0.06 ~ps and Delta Gamma/\Gamma = 0.25^{+0.14}_{-0.15}. For the ratio of the B_s^0 and B^0 lifetimes we obtain tau(B_s^0)/tau(B^0)} = 0.91 +/- 0.09 (stat) +/- 0.003 (syst).Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. FERMILAB-PUB-05-324-

    Search for right-handed W bosons in top quark decay

    We present a measurement of the fraction f+ of right-handed W bosons produced in top quark decays, based on a candidate sample of ttˉt\bar{t} events in the lepton+jets decay mode. These data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 230pb^-1, collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppˉp\bar{p} Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. We use a constrained fit to reconstruct the kinematics of the ttˉt\bar{t} and decay products, which allows for the measurement of the leptonic decay angle θ∗\theta^* for each event. By comparing the cos⁡θ∗\cos\theta^* distribution from the data with those for the expected background and signal for various values of f+, we find f+=0.00+-0.13(stat)+-0.07(syst). This measurement is consistent with the standard model prediction of f+=3.6x10^-4.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review D Rapid Communications 7 pages, 3 figure

    Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at 95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE

    Measurement of the B0_s semileptonic branching ratio to an orbitally excited D_s** state, Br(B0_s -> Ds1(2536) mu nu)

    In a data sample of approximately 1.3 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector between 2002 and 2006, the orbitally excited charm state D_s1(2536) has been observed with a measured mass of 2535.7 +/- 0.6 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst) MeV via the decay mode B0_s -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X. A first measurement is made of the branching ratio product Br(b(bar) -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X).Br(D_s1(2536)->D* K0_S). Assuming that D_s1(2536) production in semileptonic decay is entirely from B0_s, an extraction of the semileptonic branching ratio Br(B0_s -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X) is made.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX, version with minor changes as accepted by Phys.
