Shallow seismic reflection profile of the Meers fault, Comanche County, Oklahoma
This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from âhttp://onlinelibrary.wiley.comâ.A high-resolution seismic-reflection survey was conducted across the Meers fault in Comanche County, Oklahoma, in an attempt to determine the shallow structure associated with the fault zone. A downhole .50-caliber rifle was used as the seismic-energy source. Two 100-Hz geophones were connected in series at each receiver station. A 1.22-m station spacing was used for both source and receiver. Field recording parameters were set to optimize seismic reflections in the 40â150 millisecond range. A pre-analog-to-digital low-cut filter (24 dB/octave rolloff with â3 dB point of 220 Hz) resulted in dominant frequencies in excess of 150 Hz. Several interpretable reflection events between 40 and 120 msec on the processed seismic section provide a clear picture of the shallow structure. Reverse faulting is evident not only at the scarp itself but also on both the upthrown (north) and downthrown (south) portions of the line. This suggests the fault zone extends at least 180 m in both directions (north and south) from the scarp itself. Recent movement appears only to have occurred along the major fault associated with the scarp. The northern portion of the seismic line is characterized by gentle folding, which is not present on the southern portion
The General Equilibrium Incidence of Environmental Mandates
Pollution regulations affect factor demands, relative returns, production, and output prices. In our model, one sector includes pollution as an input that can be a complement or substitute for labor or capital. For each type of mandate, we find conditions where more burden is on labor or on capital. Stricter regulation does not always place less burden on the better substitute for pollution. Also, restrictions on pollution per unit output create an âoutput-subsidy effectâ on factor prices that can reverse the usual output and substitution effects. We find analogous effects for a restriction on pollution per unit capital
Calibrating CHIME, A New Radio Interferometer to Probe Dark Energy
The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) is a transit
interferometer currently being built at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical
Observatory (DRAO) in Penticton, BC, Canada. We will use CHIME to map neutral
hydrogen in the frequency range 400 -- 800\,MHz over half of the sky, producing
a measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) at redshifts between 0.8 --
2.5 to probe dark energy. We have deployed a pathfinder version of CHIME that
will yield constraints on the BAO power spectrum and provide a test-bed for our
calibration scheme. I will discuss the CHIME calibration requirements and
describe instrumentation we are developing to meet these requirements
Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) Pathfinder
A pathfinder version of CHIME (the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping
Experiment) is currently being commissioned at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical
Observatory (DRAO) in Penticton, BC. The instrument is a hybrid cylindrical
interferometer designed to measure the large scale neutral hydrogen power
spectrum across the redshift range 0.8 to 2.5. The power spectrum will be used
to measure the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale across this poorly
probed redshift range where dark energy becomes a significant contributor to
the evolution of the Universe. The instrument revives the cylinder design in
radio astronomy with a wide field survey as a primary goal. Modern low-noise
amplifiers and digital processing remove the necessity for the analog
beamforming that characterized previous designs. The Pathfinder consists of two
cylinders 37\,m long by 20\,m wide oriented north-south for a total collecting
area of 1,500 square meters. The cylinders are stationary with no moving parts,
and form a transit instrument with an instantaneous field of view of
100\,degrees by 1-2\,degrees. Each CHIME Pathfinder cylinder has a
feedline with 64 dual polarization feeds placed every 30\,cm which
Nyquist sample the north-south sky over much of the frequency band. The signals
from each dual-polarization feed are independently amplified, filtered to
400-800\,MHz, and directly sampled at 800\,MSps using 8 bits. The correlator is
an FX design, where the Fourier transform channelization is performed in FPGAs,
which are interfaced to a set of GPUs that compute the correlation matrix. The
CHIME Pathfinder is a 1/10th scale prototype version of CHIME and is designed
to detect the BAO feature and constrain the distance-redshift relation.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. submitted to Proc. SPIE, Astronomical

Unravelling the rate of action of hits in the Leishmania donovani box using standard drugs amphotericin B and miltefosine
In recent years, the neglected diseases drug discovery community has elected phenotypic screening as the key approach for the identification of novel hit compounds. However, when this approach is applied, important questions related to the mode of action for these compounds remain unanswered. One of such questions is related to the rate of action, a useful piece of information when facing the challenge of prioritising the most promising hit compounds. In the present work, compounds of the "Leishmania donovani box" were evaluated using a rate of action assay adapted from a replicative intracellular high content assay recently developed. The potency of each compound was determined every 24 hours up to 96 hours, and standard drugs amphotericin B and miltefosine were used as references to group these compounds according to their rate of action. Independently of this biological assessment, compounds were also clustered according to their minimal chemical scaffold. Comparison of the results showed a complete correlation between the chemical scaffold and the biological group for the vast majority of compounds, demonstrating how the assay was able to bring information on the rate of action for each chemical series, a property directly linked to the mode of action. Overall, the assay here described permitted us to evaluate the rate of action of the "Leishmania donovani box" using two of the currently available drugs as references and, also, to propose a number of fast-acting chemical scaffolds present in the box as starting points for future drug discovery projects to the wider scientific community. The results here presented validate the use of this assay for the determination of the rate of action early in the discovery process, to assist in the prioritisation of hit compounds
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
Combined search for the quarks of a sequential fourth generation
Results are presented from a search for a fourth generation of quarks
produced singly or in pairs in a data set corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in
2011. A novel strategy has been developed for a combined search for quarks of
the up and down type in decay channels with at least one isolated muon or
electron. Limits on the mass of the fourth-generation quarks and the relevant
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are derived in the context of a
simple extension of the standard model with a sequential fourth generation of
fermions. The existence of mass-degenerate fourth-generation quarks with masses
below 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for minimal off-diagonal
mixing between the third- and the fourth-generation quarks. With a mass
difference of 25 GeV between the quark masses, the obtained limit on the masses
of the fourth-generation quarks shifts by about +/- 20 GeV. These results
significantly reduce the allowed parameter space for a fourth generation of
fermions.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
Search for anomalous t t-bar production in the highly-boosted all-hadronic final state
A search is presented for a massive particle, generically referred to as a
Z', decaying into a t t-bar pair. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are
sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield
collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets.
The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing
suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis is based on a
data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns. Upper limits
in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and
branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for
a Randall--Sundrum Kaluza--Klein gluon. In addition, the results constrain any
enhancement in t t-bar production beyond expectations of the standard model for
t t-bar invariant masses larger than 1 TeV.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics; this version
