Neutrinoless double-beta decay search with CUORE and CUORE-0 experiments

    Get PDF
The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decays. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles and provide information on their absolute mass scale hierarchy. CUORE is now under construction and will consist of an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK, but the first tower (CUORE-0) is already taking data. The experimental techniques used will be presented as well as the preliminary CUORE-0 results. The current status of the full-mass experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed

Long-range and short-range dihadron angular correlations in central PbPb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV

This is the pre-print version of the Published Article, which can be accessed from the link below.First measurements of dihadron correlations for charged particles are presented for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity ( ) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle ( ). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side ( ) azimuthal correlation is observed at all , as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in are observed for particles with similar values. This phenomenon, also known as the \ridge", persists up to at least j j = 4. For particles with transverse momenta (pT) of 2-4 GeV/c, the ridge is found to be most prominent when these particles are correlated with particles of pT = 2-6 GeV/c, and to be much reduced when paired with particles of pT = 10-12 GeV/c

Study of exclusive two-photon production of W+W- in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV and constraints on anomalous quartic gauge couplings

    Get PDF
A search for exclusive or quasi-exclusive W+W- production by photon-photon interactions, pp -> p(*)W(+)W(-)p(*), at \/s = 7 TeV is reported using data collected by the CMS detector with an integrated luminosity of 5.05 fb(-1). Events are selected by requiring a mu(+/-)mu(-/+) vertex with no additional associated charged tracks and dilepton transverse momentum p(T)(mu(+/-)mu(-/+)) > 30 GeV. Two events passing all selection requirements are observed in the data, compared to a standard model expectation of 2.2 +/- 0.4 signal events with 0.84 +/- 0.15 background. The tail of the dilepton p(T) distribution is studied for deviations from the standard model. No events are observed with p(T) > 100 GeV. Model-independent upper limits are computed and compared to predictions involving anomalous quartic gauge couplings. The limits on the parameters a(0,c)(W)/A(2) with a dipole form factor and an energy cutoff A(cutoff) = 500 GeV are of the order of 10(-4)

Self-Assembly of Well Defined PS-b-PDMS Copolymers in Bulk and in Selective Solvent

    No full text
The synthesis of poly(styrene)-block-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PS-b-PDMS) copolymers through sequential anionic polymerization, and their self-assembly behavior in bulk (thin films) and in solution (nanoparticles) is herein reported. The results obtained in bulk showed the formation of original island-type nanostructures with periodic separation and uniform height for thin films prepared by spin coating on silicon substrates followed by thermo- or solvent annealing, as evidenced by atomic force microscopy (AFM). In selective solvent (dimethylformamide), micellar core (PDMS) - shell (PS) nanoparticles originated upon direct dissolution, and the corresponding structure was determined in details by combining static and dynamic light scattering (SDLS) measurements.Fil: Ninago, Mario Daniel. Structure of Micelles Formed by Highly Asymmetric Polystyrene-b-Polydimethylsiloxane and Polystyrene-b-poly[5-(N,N-diethylamino)isoprene] Diblock Copolymers

    No full text
The internal structure of polystyrene(PS)-shell micelles having core-forming blocks consisting of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) or poly[5-(N,N-diethylamino)isoprene] (PAI) was determined in detail by accessing the multilevel structural organization using static and dynamic light scattering and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. Well-defined PS-b-PDMS and PS-b-PAI diblock copolymers with molar masses in the range of 12.0k-18.2k g/mol were dispersed in cyclohexane, dimethylacetamide, or dimethylformamide. Colloidal nanoparticles exhibiting either swollen core with a large surface area per corona chain that enables the PS chains to assume a random coil conformation with Gaussian statistics, or compact core and slightly stretched PS chains in the corona were obtained. Therefore, the results of this study provide an interesting alternative allowing for precise control of the core and corona properties of PS-b-PDMS and PS-b-PAI micelles in selective solvents. Admittedly, such differences in terms of micellar properties can dictate the potential of block copolymer micelles for generating thin films from preformed nano-objects, as well as the capability to function as nanoreactors in organic medium.Fil: Giacomelli, Fernando C..
