Association of acculturation with cardiac structure and function among Hispanics/Latinos: a cross-sectional analysis of the echocardiographic study of Latinos.
OBJECTIVE:Hispanics/Latinos, the largest immigrant population in the USA, undergo the process of acculturation and have a large burden of heart failure risk. Few studies have examined the association of acculturation on cardiac structure and function. DESIGN:Cross-sectional. SETTING:The Echocardiographic Study of Latinos. PARTICIPANTS:1818 Hispanic adult participants with baseline echocardiographic assessment and acculturation measured by the Short Acculturation Scale, nativity, age at immigration, length of US residence, generational status and language. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES:Echocardiographic assessment of left atrial volume index (LAVI), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), early diastolic transmitral inflow and mitral annular velocities. RESULTS:The study population was predominantly Spanish-speaking and foreign-born with mean residence in the US of 22.7 years, mean age of 56.4 years; 50% had hypertension, 28% had diabetes and 44% had a body mass index >30 kg/m2. Multivariable analyses demonstrated higher LAVI with increasing years of US residence. Foreign-born and first-generation participants had higher E/e' but lower LAVI and e' velocities compared with the second generation. Higher acculturation and income >20K were associated with higher LVMI, LAVI and E/e' but lower e' velocities. Preferential Spanish-speakers with an income <20K had a higher E/e'. CONCLUSIONS:Acculturation was associated with abnormal cardiac structure and function, with some effect modification by socioeconomic status
Hyaluronan oligosaccharides induce cell death through PI3-K/Akt pathway independently of NF-κB transcription factor
Several studies indicate that hyaluronan oligosaccharides (oHA) are able to modulate growth and cell survival in solid tumors; however, no studies have been undertaken to analyze the effect of oHA on T-lymphoid disorders. In this work we showed that oHA were able to induce apoptosis in lymphoma cell lines. Since PI3-K/Akt and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) are major factors involved in cell survival and anti-apoptotic pathways in lymphoma cells, we hypothesized that oHA could induce apoptosis through inhibition of these pathways. oHA were identified by a method which allows characterization of length using a high pH anion exchange chromatography with pulse amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD). oHA inhibited PIP3 production (principal product of PI3-K activity) and reduced Akt phosphorylation levels, similarly to the specific inhibitor wortmannin. However, treatment with either oHA or wortmannin failed to inhibit constitutive NF-κB activity and modulate IκBα protein levels, suggesting that PI3-K and NF-κB signaling pathways are not related in the cell lines used. Cell behavior differed using native hyaluronan (HA), which induced PIP3 production, Akt phosphorylation, and NF-κB activation, although not related with cell survival since treatment with native HA showed no effect on apoptosis. Our results suggest that oHA induce apoptosis by suppression of PI3-K/Akt cell survival pathway without involving NF-κB activation, through a mechanism that differs from the one mediated by native HA. © 2006 Oxford University Press.Fil:Gallo-Rodriguez, C. Detailed Radio to Soft Gamma-ray Studies of the 2005 Outburst of the New X-ray Transient XTE J1818-245
XTE J1818-245 is an X-ray nova that experienced an outburst in 2005, first
seen by the RXTE satellite. The source was observed simultaneously at various
wavelengths up to soft gamma-rays with the INTEGRAL satellite, from 2005
February to September. X-ray novae are extreme systems that often harbor a
black hole, and are known to emit throughout the electromagnetic spectrum when
in outburst. We analyzed radio, (N)IR, optical, X-ray and soft gamma-ray
observations and constructed simultaneous broad-band X-ray spectra. Analyzing
both the light curves in various energy ranges and the hardness-intensity
diagram enabled us to study the long-term behavior of the source. Spectral
parameters were typical of the Soft Intermediate States and the High Soft
States of a black hole candidate. The source showed relatively small spectral
variations in X-rays with considerable flux variation in radio. Spectral
studies showed that the accretion disc cooled down from 0.64 to 0.27 keV in 100
days and that the total flux decreased while the relative flux of the hot
medium increased. Radio emission was detected several times, and,
interestingly, five days after entering the HSS. Modeling the spectral energy
distribution from the radio to the soft gamma-rays reveals that the radio
flares arise from several ejection events. XTE J1818-245 is likely a black hole
candidate transient source that might be closer than the Galactic Bulge. The
results from the data analysis trace the physical changes that took place in
the system at a maximum bolometric luminosity of (0.4-0.9)e38 erg/s (assuming a
distance between 2.8-4.3 kpc) and they are discussed within the context of disc

MSM constitute one of the populations most affected by HIV and other STIs in Argentina. Previous prevalence studies were based on convenience samples. RDS, a methodology designed to access hidden populations, is being used for the first time in Argentina to recruit MSM.
Methods
RDS recruitment started in November 2007 with 16 first generation participants (seeds) who were selected for their potential to tap in MSM networks. Recruitment is ongoing. Men must be 18 years of age or older, be residents of Buenos Aires, self-report having sex with men at least 10 times in their lives and at least once in the past six months. They must have a coupon indicating they have been referred by a study participant. Specimens are being collected for HIV and STI diagnosis. All data are weighted using the RDS Analysis Tool (RDSAT).
Results
To date, 333 MSM were recruited through RDS showing a prevalence of 11.3, 16.6, 7.9, 17.6, 4.0 and 88.3% for HIV, HBV, HCV, T. pallidum, Chlamydia and HPV, respectively. Chlamydia and HPV diagnoses were only performed in 73 and 79 participants, respectively. Among HPV positive individuals, 47.8% had almost one of these high risk types (16, 58, 33, 45, 18 and 31) and 32% had multiple infections with 2 or more types.
Conclusion
Compared with previous studies, these results show similar HIV, HBV and T. pallidum prevalences but higher HCV prevalence. For the first time, an elevated prevalence of HPV was detected on MSM, with high frequency of types associated with ano-genital cancer. Preliminary analyses of socio demographic data show that RDS helps recruit a diversity of MSM, particularly of lower socio-economic level usually missed with other recruitment methods. The high prevalence of coinfections in this population should be taken into account if MSM are part of vaccine trials given that STI may increase HIV sexual transmission
Radio emission and jets from microquasars
To some extent, all Galactic binary systems hosting a compact object are
potential `microquasars', so much as all galactic nuclei may have been quasars,
once upon a time. The necessary ingredients for a compact object of stellar
mass to qualify as a microquasar seem to be: accretion, rotation and magnetic
field. The presence of a black hole may help, but is not strictly required,
since neutron star X-ray binaries and dwarf novae can be powerful jet sources
as well. The above issues are broadly discussed throughout this Chapter, with a
a rather trivial question in mind: why do we care? In other words: are jets a
negligible phenomenon in terms of accretion power, or do they contribute
significantly to dissipating gravitational potential energy? How do they
influence their surroundings? The latter point is especially relevant in a
broader context, as there is mounting evidence that outflows powered by
super-massive black holes in external galaxies may play a crucial role in
regulating the evolution of cosmic structures. Microquasars can also be thought
of as a form of quasars for the impatient: what makes them appealing, despite
their low number statistics with respect to quasars, are the fast variability
time-scales. In the first approximation, the physics of the jet-accretion
coupling in the innermost regions should be set by the mass/size of the
accretor: stellar mass objects vary on 10^5-10^8 times shorter time-scales,
making it possible to study variable accretion modes and related ejection

The black hole candidate MAXIJ1659-152 in and towards quiescence in X-ray and radio
In this paper we report on Expanded Very Large Array radio and Chandra and
Swift X-ray observations of the outburst decay of the transient black hole
candidate MAXI J1659-152 in 2011. We discuss the distance to the source taking
the high inclination into account and we conclude that the source distance is
probably 6+-2 kpc. The lowest observed flux corresponds to a luminosity of
2x10^31 (d/6 kpc)^2 erg/s This, together with the orbital period of 2.4 hr
reported in the literature, suggests that the quiescent X-ray luminosity is
higher than predicted on the basis of the orbital period -- quiescent X-ray
luminosity relationship. The relation between the accretion and ejection
mechanisms can be studied using the observed correlation between the radio and
X-ray luminosities as these evolve over an outburst. We determine the behaviour
of MAXI J1659-152 in the radio -- X-ray diagram at low X-ray luminosities using
the observations reported in this paper and at high X-ray luminosities using
values reported in the literature. At high X-ray luminosities the source lies
closer to the sources that follow a correlation index steeper than 0.6-0.7.
However, when compared to other sources that follow a steeper correlation
index, the X-ray luminosity in MAXI J1659-152 is also lower. The latter can
potentially be explained by the high inclination of MAXI J1659-152 if the X-ray
emission comes from close to the source and the radio emission is originating
in a more extended region. However, it is probable that the source was not in
the canonical low-hard state during these radio observations and this may
affect the behaviour of the source as well. At intermediate X-ray luminosities
the source makes the transition from the radio underluminous sources in the
direction of the relation traced by the 'standard' correlation similar to what

Structure and dynamics of nanoconfined water and aqueous solutions
This review is devoted to discussing recent progress on the structure, thermodynamic, reactivity, and dynamics of water and aqueous systems confined within different types of nanopores, synthetic and biological. Currently, this is a branch of water science that has attracted enormous attention of researchers from different fields interested to extend the understanding of the anomalous properties of bulk water to the nanoscopic domain. From a fundamental perspective, the interactions of water and solutes with a confining surface dramatically modify the liquid's structure and, consequently, both its thermodynamical and dynamical behaviors, breaking the validity of the classical thermodynamic and phenomenological description of the transport properties of aqueous systems. Additionally, man-made nanopores and porous materials have emerged as promising solutions to challenging problems such as water purification, biosensing, nanofluidic logic and gating, and energy storage and conversion, while aquaporin, ion channels, and nuclear pore complex nanopores regulate many biological functions such as the conduction of water, the generation of action potentials, and the storage of genetic material. In this work, the more recent experimental and molecular simulations advances in this exciting and rapidly evolving field will be reported and critically discussed
XTE J1752-223 in outburst: a persistent radio jet, dramatic flaring, multiple ejections and linear polarisation
The black hole candidate, XTE J1752-223, was discovered in 2009 October when
it entered an outburst. We obtained radio data from the Australia Telescope
Compact Array for the duration of the ~9 month event. The lightcurves show that
the radio emission from the compact jet persisted for the duration of an
extended hard state and through the transition to the intermediate state. The
flux then rose rapidly by a factor of 10 and the radio source entered a series
of at least 7 maxima, the first of which was likely to be emission associated
with the compact jet. The subsequent 6 flares were accompanied by variable
behaviour in terms of radio spectrum, degree of linear polarisation, morphology
and associated X-ray behaviour. They were, however, remarkably similar in terms
of the estimated minimum power required to launch such an ejection event. We
compare the timing of radio peaks with the location of the ejecta, imaged by
contemporaneous VLBI experiments. We then discuss the mechanism behind the
events, in terms of whether discrete ejections is the most likely description
of the behaviour. One ejection, at least, appears to be travelling with
apparent superluminal motion. The range of properties, however, suggests that
mutiple mechanisms may be relevant and that at least some of the emission is
coming from shocked interactions amongst the ejecta and between the ejecta and
the interstellar medium. We also compare the radio flux density with the X-ray
source during the hard state and conclude that XTE J1752-223 is a
radio-weak/X-ray-bright outlier on the universal correlation for black hole

Theiler's Murine Encephalomyelitis Virus as a Vaccine Candidate for Immunotherapy
The induction of sterilizing T-cell responses to tumors is a major goal in the development of T-cell vaccines for treating cancer. Although specific components of anti-viral CD8+ immunity are well characterized, we still lack the ability to mimic viral CD8+ T-cell responses in therapeutic settings for treating cancers. Infection with the picornavirus Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) induces a strong sterilizing CD8+ T-cell response. In the absence of sterilizing immunity, the virus causes a persistent infection. We capitalized on the ability of TMEV to induce strong cellular immunity even under conditions of immune deficiency by modifying the virus to evaluate its potential as a T-cell vaccine. The introduction of defined CD8+ T-cell epitopes into the leader sequence of the TMEV genome generates an attenuated vaccine strain that can efficiently drive CD8+ T-cell responses to the targeted antigen. This virus activates T-cells in a manner that is capable of inducing targeted tissue damage and glucose dysregulation in an adoptive T-cell transfer model of diabetes mellitus. As a therapeutic vaccine for the treatment of established melanoma, epitope-modified TMEV can induce strong cytotoxic T-cell responses and promote infiltration of the T-cells into established tumors, ultimately leading to a delay in tumor growth and improved survival of vaccinated animals. We propose that epitope-modified TMEV is an excellent candidate for further development as a human T-cell vaccine for use in immunotherapy
The radio/X-ray domain of black hole X-ray binaries at the lowest radio luminosities
We report on deep, coordinated radio and X-ray observations of the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480 in quiescence. The source was observed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array for a total of 17.5 h at 5.3 GHz, yielding a 4.8 ± 1.4 μJy radio source at a position consistent with the binary system. At a distance of 1.7 kpc, this corresponds to an integrated radio luminosity between 4 and 8 × 1025 erg s−1, depending on the spectral index. This is the lowest radio luminosity measured for any accreting black hole to date. Simultaneous observations with the Chandra X-ray Telescope detected XTE J1118+480 at 1.2 × 10−14 erg s−1 cm−2 (1–10 keV), corresponding to an Eddington ratio of ~4 × 10−9 for a 7.5 M☉ black hole. Combining these new measurements with data from the 2005 and 2000 outbursts available in the literature, we find evidence for a relationship of the form lr = α+βlX (where l denotes logarithmic luminosities), with β = 0.72 ± 0.09. XTE J1118+480 is thus the third system – together with GX339-4 and V404 Cyg – for which a tight, non-linear radio/X-ray correlation has been reported over more than 5 dex in lX. Confirming previous results, we find no evidence for a dependence of the correlation normalization of an individual system on orbital parameters, relativistic boosting, reported black hole spin and/or black hole mass. We then perform a clustering and linear regression analysis on what is arguably the most up-to-date collection of coordinated radio and X-ray luminosity measurements from quiescent and hard-state black hole X-ray binaries, including 24 systems. At variance with previous results, a two-cluster description is statistically preferred only for random errors <~0.3 dex in both lr and lX, a level which we argue can be easily reached when the known spectral shape/distance uncertainties and intrinsic variability are accounted for. A linear regression analysis performed on the whole data set returns a best-fitting slope β = 0.61 ± 0.03 and intrinsic scatter σ0 = 0.31 ± 0.03 dex
