Iodine source apportionment in the Malawian diet
The aim of this study was to characterise nutritional-I status in Malawi. Dietary-I intakes were
assessed using new datasets of crop, fish, salt and water-I concentrations, while I status was
assessed for 60 women living on each of calcareous and non-calcareous soils as defined by urinary
iodine concentration (UIC). Iodine concentration in staple foods was low, with median concentrations
of 0.01 mg kgâ1 in maize grain, 0.008 mg kgâ1 in roots and tubers, but 0.155 mg kgâ1 in leafy
vegetables. Freshwater fish is a good source of dietary-I with a median concentration of 0.51 mg kgâ1.
Mean Malawian dietary-Iodine intake from food, excluding salt, was just 7.8 ÎŒg dâ1 compared to an
adult requirement of 150 ÎŒg dâ1. Despite low dietary-I intake from food, median UICs were 203 ÎŒg Lâ1
with only 12% defined as I deficient whilst 21% exhibited excessive I intake. Iodised salt is likely to
be the main source of dietary I intake in Malawi; thus, I nutrition mainly depends on the usage and
concentration of I in iodised salt. Drinking water could be a significant source of I in some areas,
providing up to 108 ÎŒg dâ1 based on consumption of 2 L dâ1

Participants were divided into four groups, each presented a different combination of multi-sensory stimuli. Those included real-time 3D graphics, audio stimuli (ambient, static and event sounds), and haptics consisting of wind and tactile feedback when touching objects. A presence questionnaire was used to evaluate subjectively reported presence on the one hand, and on the other physiological sensors were used to measure heart rate and skin conductance as an objective measure. Results strongly indicate that an increase of modalities does not automatically result in an increase of presence
Cassava Brown Streak Disease response and association with agronomic traits in elite Nigerian cassava cultivars
Open Access Journal; Published online: 22 Nov 2021Cassava mosaic geminiviruses (CMGs) and cassava brown streak viruses (CBSVs) cause the highest yield losses in cassava production in Africa. In particular, cassava brown streak disease (CBSD) is and continues to be a significant constraint to optimal cassava production in Eastern and Southern Africa. While CBSD has not
been reported in West Africa, its recent rapid spread and damage to cassava productivity in Eastern, and Southern Africa is alarming. The aim of this study was to evaluate Nigerian cassava genotypes in order to determine their responses to CBSD, in the event that it invades Nigeria, the worldâs largest cassava producer. The study gathered information on whether useful CBSD resistance alleles are present in the elite Nigerian cassava accessions. A total of 1,980 full-sib cassava seedlings from 106 families were assessed in the field at the seedling stage for a year. A subset of 569 clones were selected and assessed for another year at the clonal stage in Namulonge, central Uganda, a known hotspot for CBSD screening. Results indicated that foliar and root incidences and severities varied significantly (p †0.01, p †0.001) except for CBSD foliar incidence at 6 months (CBSD6i). Highest and lowest plot-based heritability estimates for CBSD were registered for CBSD root severity (CBSDrs) (0.71) and CBSD6i (0.5). Positive and highly significant correlations were noted between CBSD root incidence (CBSDri) and CBSDrs (r = 0.90âââ). Significant positive correlations were also noted between CBSD foliar severity at 3 months (CBSD3s) and CBSD foliar incidence at 6 months (CBSD6i
) (r = 0.77âââ), CBSD3s and CBSDrs (r = 0.35âââ). Fresh root weight (FreshRW) negatively correlated with CBSDri and CBSDrs, respectively (r = â0.21âââ and r = â0.22âââ). Similarly, CBSD3s correlated negatively with cassava mosaic disease severity at 3 (CMD3s) and 6 months (CMD6s), respectively (r = â0.25âââ and r = â0.21âââ). Fifteen clones were selected using a non-weighted summation selection index for further screening. In conclusion, results revealed that the elite Nigerian accessions exhibited significant susceptibility to CBSD within 2 years of evaluation period. It is expected that this information will aid future breeding decisions for the improvement of CBSD resistance among the Nigerian cassava varieties
Observations of Coronal Mass Ejections with the Coronal Multichannel Polarimeter
The Coronal Multichannel Polarimeter (CoMP) measures not only the
polarization of coronal emission, but also the full radiance profiles of
coronal emission lines. For the first time, CoMP observations provide
high-cadence image sequences of the coronal line intensity, Doppler shift and
line width simultaneously in a large field of view. By studying the Doppler
shift and line width we may explore more of the physical processes of CME
initiation and propagation. Here we identify a list of CMEs observed by CoMP
and present the first results of these observations. Our preliminary analysis
shows that CMEs are usually associated with greatly increased Doppler shift and
enhanced line width. These new observations provide not only valuable
information to constrain CME models and probe various processes during the
initial propagation of CMEs in the low corona, but also offer a possible

4pi Models of CMEs and ICMEs
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which dynamically connect the solar surface to
the far reaches of interplanetary space, represent a major anifestation of
solar activity. They are not only of principal interest but also play a pivotal
role in the context of space weather predictions. The steady improvement of
both numerical methods and computational resources during recent years has
allowed for the creation of increasingly realistic models of interplanetary
CMEs (ICMEs), which can now be compared to high-quality observational data from
various space-bound missions. This review discusses existing models of CMEs,
characterizing them by scientific aim and scope, CME initiation method, and
physical effects included, thereby stressing the importance of fully 3-D

Why does fertilization reduce plant species diversity? Testing three competition-based hypotheses
1 Plant species diversity drops when fertilizer is added or productivity increases. To explain this, the total competition hypothesis predicts that competition above ground and below ground both become more important, leading to more competitive exclusion, whereas the light competition hypothesis predicts that a shift from below-ground to above-ground competition has a similar effect. The density hypothesis predicts that more above-ground competition leads to mortality of small individuals of all species, and thus a random loss of species from plots. 2 Fertilizer was added to old field plots to manipulate both below-ground and above-ground resources, while shadecloth was used to manipulate above-ground resources alone in tests of these hypotheses. 3 Fertilizer decreased both ramet density and species diversity, and the effect remained significant when density was added as a covariate. Density effects explained only a small part of the drop in diversity with fertilizer. 4 Shadecloth and fertilizer reduced light by the same amount, but only fertilizer reduced diversity. Single Spin Asymmetry in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at GeV
We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin
asymmetry at the center of mass energy GeV in elastic
proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The was measured
in the four-momentum transfer squared range \GeVcSq, the region of a significant interference between the
electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of
and its -dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip
amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single
spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated
by the Pomeron amplitude at this , we conclude that this measurement
addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the
Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
