Atom addition reactions in interstellar ice : new pathways towards molecular complexity in space -
This thesis presents detailed laboratory based research on solid-state atom and radical addition reactions aimed to increase our understanding of the chemistry that occurs in interstellar ices. The focus here is on the chemistry of nitrogen-bearing species as well as on the formation of molecules of astrobiological importance. An attempt to provide a link between the formation of the simplest nitrogen-bearing molecules and simplest amino acids is made. In addition to amino-acid formation routes, the simplest representatives of two other classes of prebiotic compounds - aldoses (polyhydroxy aldehydes) and polyols - with their corresponding formation routes are presented.Raymond & Beverly Sackler Laboratory for AstrophysicsLaboratory astrophysics and astrochemistr
RADIATION KINETICS AND CHEMICAL REACTIVITY OF BARRIER DISCHARGES IN HUMID ARGON
International audienceThe technique of spatially resolved cross-correlation spectroscopy was used to record two-dimensional luminosity distributions for the selected spectral bands of molecular nitrogen (λ=337.1 nm), OH-radical (λ=308 nm), and two spectral lines of excited Ar (λ=750.4 nm and λ=763.5 nm) emitted by the microdischarges of the barrier discharge in flowing humid argon at atmospheric pressure. Concentrations of two stable reaction products of H2O decomposition (H2 and O2) in argon plasma were determined experimentally as functions of humidity. Comparison of these results with the corresponding measurements of radiation kinetics permitted a detailed analysis of the influence of the discharge mechanism on its chemical reactivity in humid argon to be accomplished
Highly-parallelized simulation of a pixelated LArTPC on a GPU
The rapid development of general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) is allowing the implementation of highly-parallelized Monte Carlo simulation chains for particle physics experiments. This technique is particularly suitable for the simulation of a pixelated charge readout for time projection chambers, given the large number of channels that this technology employs. Here we present the first implementation of a full microphysical simulator of a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) equipped with light readout and pixelated charge readout, developed for the DUNE Near Detector. The software is implemented with an end-to-end set of GPU-optimized algorithms. The algorithms have been written in Python and translated into CUDA kernels using Numba, a just-in-time compiler for a subset of Python and NumPy instructions. The GPU implementation achieves a speed up of four orders of magnitude compared with the equivalent CPU version. The simulation of the current induced on 10^3 pixels takes around 1 ms on the GPU, compared with approximately 10 s on the CPU. The results of the simulation are compared against data from a pixel-readout LArTPC prototype
The timing and extent of the eruption of the Siberian Traps large igneous province: Implications for the end-Permian environmental crisis.
We present new high-precision 40Ar/39Ar ages on feldspar and biotite separates to establish the age, duration and extent of the larger Siberian Traps volcanic province. Samples include basalts and gabbros from Noril'sk, the Lower Tunguska area on the Siberian craton, the Taimyr Peninsula, the Kuznetsk Basin, Vorkuta in the Polar Urals, and from Chelyabinsk in the southern Urals. Most of the ages, except for those from Chelyabinsk, are indistinguishable from those found at Noril'sk. Cessation of activity at Noril'sk is constrained by a 40Ar/39Ar age of 250.3 ± 1.1 Ma for the uppermost Kumginsky Suite.\ud

The new 40Ar/39Ar data confirm that the bulk of Siberian volcanism occurred at 250 Ma during a period of less than 2 Ma, extending over an area of up to 5 million km2. The resolution of the data allows us to confidently conclude that the main stage of volcanism either immediately predates, or is synchronous with, the end-Permian mass extinction, further strengthening an association between volcanism and the end-Permian crisis. A sanidine age of 249.25 ± 0.14 Ma from Bed 28 tuff at the global section and stratotype at Meishan, China, allows us to bracket the PâTr boundary to 0.58 ± 0.21 myr, and enables a direct comparison between the 40Ar/39Ar age of the Traps and the PermoâTriassic boundary section.\ud

Younger ages (243 Ma) obtained for basalts from Chelyabinsk indicate that volcanism in at least the southern part of the province continued into the Triassic
