    When imaginary cartoon worlds get the "documentary look": understanding mockumentary through its animated variant

    Due to their clearly imaginary narratives and to the presence of animation itself, animated mockumentaries make the viewer aware of their fictionality from the start. Therefore, these animated works constitute the clearest example of mockumentary being not a genre, but rather a narrative style capable of transcending the boundaries of genres, media, and individual poetics. Through the analysis of Ash Brannon and Chris Buck’s feature film, Surf’s Up (2007), and of The Simpsons’ episodes “Behind the Laughter” (Mark Kirkland, 2000) and “Springfield Up” (Chuck Sheetz, 2007), in this article I argue that the mockumentary style does not consist solely in the adoption of documentary aesthetics and structures, but also in the deployment of elements (such as booms left “accidentally” in view, glances in the direction of the camera and so on) that I will call fictionality clues. I will demonstrate that, whereas in hoaxes or credible live-action mockumentaries the presence of these hints might be dismissed as due to the need of alerting the viewer to the film’s effective ontological status, in the case of animated mockumentaries they would be redundant, if used just for this purpose. Si dimostra così come, al fine di ottenere un prodotto capace di risultare d’interesse per un pubblico trasversale e internazionale, il Centro Cattolico Cinematografico (CCC) abbia preso a modello per il proprio film le due pellicole statunitensi, fatto che valida l’idea per cui con questo documentario si volesse accreditare il Papa come leader della pace a livello planetario.The essay compares the film "Pastor Angelicus" (1942) with the newsreel from the The March of Time series "The Vatican of Pius XII" (1940) as well as the documentary "The Story of the Vatican" (Jean Pages, 1941). This comparison reveals their proximity, and thus signals the Centro cattolico cinematografico’s desire to produce a film that would appeal to a wide and transnational audience. This specific wish attests to the notion that the Vatican intended Pastor Angelicus as a means to appoint Pius XII as a leader of world peace

    Enteral versus intravenous approach for the sedation of critically ill patients: a randomized and controlled trial

    Background. ICU patients must be kept conscious, calm, and cooperative even during the critical phases of illness. Enteral administration of sedative drugs might avoid oversedation, and would be as adequate as intravenous for awake patients, with fewer side effects and lower costs. This study compares two sedation strategies, in order to early reach and maintain the light sedation target. Methods. Multicenter, single-blind randomized and controlled trial carried out in 12 Italian ICUs, involving patients with expected mechanical ventilation duration >72 hours at ICU admission and predicted mortality >12% (Simplified Acute Physiology Score II >32 points) during the first 24 ICU hours. Patients were randomly assigned to receive intravenous (midazolam, propofol) or enteral (hydroxyzine, lorazepam, and melatonin) sedation. Primary outcome: percentage of work shifts with an observed Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS) = target RASS \ub1 1. Secondary outcomes: protocol feasibility, delirium- and coma-free days, costs of drugs, length of ICU and hospital stay, ICU, hospital, and one-year mortality. Results. 348 patients were enrolled. There were no differences in the primary outcome: enteral 89.8 [74.1-100], intravenous 94.4 [78-100]%, p=0.20. Enteral-treated patients had more protocol violations: 81 (46.6%) vs 7 (4.2%), p<0.01, more self-extubations: 4 (2.4%) vs 14 (8.1%), p=0.03, a lighter sedative target (RASS = 0): 93 [71-100] vs 83 [61-100]%, p<0.01, and lower total costs for drugs: 2.39 [0.75- 9.78] vs 4.15 [1.20 -20.19] \u20ac/day with mechanical ventilation (p=0.01). Conclusions. Although enteral sedation of critically ill patients is cheaper and permits a lighter sedation target, it is not superior to intravenous sedation for reaching the RASS target.     The Mitogenome Relationships and Phylogeography of Barn Swallows (Hirundo rustica)

    The barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) poses a number of fascinating scientific questions, including the taxonomic status of postulated subspecies. Here, we obtained and assessed the sequence variation of 411 complete mitogenomes, mainly from the European H. r. rustica, but other subspecies as well. In almost every case, we observed subspecies-specific haplogroups, which we employed together with estimated radiation times to postulate a model for the geographical and temporal worldwide spread of the species. The female barn swallow carrying the Hirundo rustica ancestral mitogenome left Africa (or its vicinity) around 280 thousand years ago (kya), and her descendants expanded first into Eurasia and then, at least 51 kya, into the Americas, from where a relatively recent (&lt;20 kya) back migration to Asia took place. The exception to the haplogroup subspecies specificity is represented by the sedentary Levantine H. r. transitiva that extensively shares haplogroup A with the migratory European H. r. rustica and, to a lesser extent, haplogroup B with the Egyptian H. r. savignii. Our data indicate that rustica and transitiva most likely derive from a sedentary Levantine population source that split at the end of the Younger Dryas (YD) (11.7 kya). Since then, however, transitiva received genetic inputs from and admixed with both the closely related rustica and the adjacent savignii. Demographic analyses confirm this species' strong link with climate fluctuations and human activities making it an excellent indicator for monitoring and assessing the impact of current global changes on wildlife

    3-hydroxy-L-kynurenamine is an immunomodulatory biogenic amine

    Tryptophan catabolism is a major metabolic pathway utilized by several professional and non-professional antigen presenting cells to maintain immunological tolerance. Here we report that 3-hydroxy-l-kynurenamine (3-HKA) is a biogenic amine produced via an alternative pathway of tryptophan metabolism. In vitro, 3-HKA has an anti-inflammatory profile by inhibiting the IFN-gamma mediated STAT1/NF-kappa Beta pathway in both mouse and human dendritic cells (DCs) with a consequent decrease in the release of pro-inflammatory chemokines and cytokines, most notably TNF, IL-6, and IL12p70. 3-HKA has protective effects in an experimental mouse model of psoriasis by decreasing skin thickness, erythema, scaling and fissuring, reducing TNF, IL-1 beta, IFN-gamma, and IL-17 production, and inhibiting generation of effector CD8(+) T cells. Similarly, in a mouse model of nephrotoxic nephritis, besides reducing inflammatory cytokines, 3-HKA improves proteinuria and serum urea nitrogen, overall ameliorating immune-mediated glomerulonephritis and renal dysfunction. Overall, we propose that this biogenic amine is a crucial component of tryptophan-mediated immune tolerance. 3-hydroxy-L-kynurenamine (3-HKA) is a metabolite deriving from a lateral pathway of tryptophan catabolism. Here the authors identify 3-HKA as a biogenic amine and show it has anti-inflammatory properties that can protect mice against psoriasis and nephrotoxic nephritis.Peer reviewe

Since then, significant progress has been made across all aspects of the EBP roadmap, as outlined in the 2018 article describing the project’s goals, strategies, and challenges (1). The launch phase has ended and the clock has started on reaching the EBP’s major milestones. This Special Feature explores the many facets of the EBP, including a review of progress, a description of major scientific goals, exemplar projects, ethical legal and social issues, and applications of biodiversity genomics. In this Introduction, we summarize the current status of the EBP, held virtually October 5 to 9, 2020, including recent updates through February 2021. References to the nine Perspective articles included in this Special Feature are cited to guide the reader toward deeper understanding of the goals and challenges facing the EBP
