Search for jet extinction in the inclusive jet-pT spectrum from proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV

Further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the published articles title, journal citation, and DOI.The first search at the LHC for the extinction of QCD jet production is presented, using data collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.7 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The extinction model studied in this analysis is motivated by the search for signatures of strong gravity at the TeV scale (terascale gravity) and assumes the existence of string couplings in the strong-coupling limit. In this limit, the string model predicts the suppression of all high-transverse-momentum standard model processes, including jet production, beyond a certain energy scale. To test this prediction, the measured transverse-momentum spectrum is compared to the theoretical prediction of the standard model. No significant deficit of events is found at high transverse momentum. A 95% confidence level lower limit of 3.3 TeV is set on the extinction mass scale
Season-dependent physiological behavior of Miscanthus x giganteus growing on heavy-metal contaminated areas in relation to soil properties
Miscanthus x giganteus is often considered as a suitable plant species for phytomanagement of heavy metal polluted sites. Nevertheless, its physiological behavior in response to the level of metal toxicity throughout the growing season remains poorly documented. Miscanthus x giganteus was cultivated on three sites in Belgium (BSJ: non-polluted control; CAR: slightly contaminated; VM strongly polluted by Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni and As). The presence of Miscanthus improved soil biological parameters assessed by measurement of enzyme activity and basal soil respiration on the three considered sites, although to a lower level on VM site. Heavy metal accumulation in the shoot was already recorded in spring. It displayed a contrasting distribution in the summer leaves since heavy metals and As metalloid accumulated mainly in the older leaves of CAR plants while showing a uniform distribution among leaves of different ages in VM plants. Comparatively to plants growing on BSJ, net photosynthesis decreased in plants growing on CAR and VM sites. The recorded decrease was mainly related to stomatal factors in CAR plants (decrease in stomatal conductance and in Ci) but to non-stomatal factors such as decrease in carboxylation efficiency and non-photochemical quenching in VM plants. Stomata remained open in VM plants which presented lower instantaneous and intrinsic water use efficiencies than CAR and BSJ plants. High proportions of heavy metals accumulated in CAR plants were bound to the cell wall fraction while the soluble and organelle-rich fractions were proportionally higher in VM plants, leading to a decrease in cell viability and cell membrane damages. It is concluded that not only the intensity but also the nature of physiological responses in Miscanthus x giganteus may drastically differ depending on the pollution level
Effect of porous structure and spreading pressure on the storage stability of red onion microcapsules produced by spray freezing into liquid cryogenic and spray drying
8 páginasRed onion microcapsules were produced by spray freezing into liquid cryogenic (SFLC) and spray drying (SD) and their anthocyanin contents were evaluated kinetically at different water activities () at 35 °C. The spreading pressure-area isotherms were determined at 35 °C. These isotherms provide important information about the different phases of adsorbed water present in SD and SFLC capsules, which can be related to minimal integral entropy and to chemical stability during storage. The porosity of the microcapsules was examined using low-temperature adsorption of nitrogen. The maximum anthocyanin stability occurred at from 0.108 to 0.318, and 0.108 to 0.515, for SD and SFLC, respectively. SD products were nonporous whereas SFLC were mesoporous. The tendency to contraction of the adsorbed water film was compared with the minimum integral entropy and was proposed as a new stability criterion to predict suitable storage conditions of dehydrated foods

EFECTO DE BOQUILLAS NEUMATICAS DE DOS FLUIDOS EN LASCARACTERÍSTICAS DE ESTABILIDAD DE LAS EMULSIONES ELABORADASCON MÉTODO DE ALTA ENERGÍA (MICROFLUIDIZACIÓN)
16 páginasThe atomization of oil in water emulsions is used in the food industry such as in the preparation of capsules, films and coatings among others. However, the passage through the atomization devices could have an influence on the properties of the emulsion and, consequently of the final product. In the present work, it was evaluated the influence of two fluid nozzles of different dimensions on stability parameters of oil in water emulsion produced by microfluidization and using gum Arabic as wall material. Results indicated that the droplet size, the polydispersity index and the Turbiscan stability index of atomized emulsions were affected by and Oswald ripening mechanism as compared with those of the original emulsion. The confocal laser scanning microscopy images confirmed that the passage of the emulsion through the atomization devices decreased the thickness of wall material of the droplets with respect to the original emulsion. It was concluded that, in the proper design of the final products prepared by atomization it must be considered its effect on the stability of the atomized emulsions by including during the processing, a suitable sampling-characterization on-line schem
The objective of this work was to evaluate the agricultural potential of the Ceveiro watershed Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, which contains 1990 ha considering available environmental conditions. Medium and clayey textured Ultisols and Entisols predominate. Land use was determined by remote sensing, the limits of the were digitalized and crossed with soils and shape data, using the Environmental Analysis System for Agricultural Planning. These results were then compared with the current land usage patterns that occurred in 1995, to determine if differences existed between current and prescribed land use. In 1995, 48% of the area was being used below its potential use, 27% used appropriately, and 23% used with excessive intensity. The main difference in land use between the appropriately used and excessively used areas was due to sugarcane production
The Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of acute pancreatitis in children and adolescents
Acute pancreatitis (AP) and recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP) are conditions, whose incidence is apparently on the rise. Despite the ever-increasing evidence regarding the management of AP in children and adults, therapeutic actions that could potentially affect having a poor prognosis in those patients, especially in the pediatric population, continue to be carried out. Therefore, the Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología convened a group of 24 expert pediatric gastroenterologists from different institutions and areas of Mexico, as well as 2 pediatric nutritionists and 2 specialists in pediatric surgery, to discuss different aspects of the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of AP and RAP in the pediatric population. The aim of this document is to present the consensus results. Different AP topics were addressed by 6 working groups, each of which reviewed the information and formulated statements considered pertinent for each module, on themes involving recommendations and points of debate, concerning diagnostic or therapeutic approaches. All the statements were presented and discussed. They were then evaluated through a Delphi process, with electronic and anonymous voting, to determine the level of agreement on the statements. A total of 29 statements were formulated, all of which reached above 75% agreement in the first round of voting.
