    HIV in the Heartland: Experiences of Living with HIV in Urban and Rural Areas of the Midwest

    Scholarly research on HIV/AIDS and stigma has largely demonstrated a different experience for people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) who inhabit urban and rural areas. Largely missing from this scholarship are experiences in low prevalence areas. Low prevalence areas typically have fewer resources, social networks, and HIV infection and prevalence is less common. In this paper, we examine the challenges PLWHAs in rural and urban areas of the Midwest face and how these individuals manage, respond, and combat HIV/AIDS related stigmas in their communities. This paper utilizes interview data to understand the lived experiences of 18 persons living with HIV and AIDS. This paper reveals that respondents in rural areas are likely to be geographically dispersed, struggle with accessing healthcare services, believe their communities are less tolerant, and are less likely to disclose their positive status or seek out social support. Respondents who lived in urban areas were more likely to disclose their positive status, have access to AIDS service organizations and social support, and to participate in advocacy in the “HIV Community.” Our study demonstrates how social and community context are agentic players in shaping life chances, decisions, and behavior of the PLWHAs we interviewed

    Nickel hydrogen low Earth orbit test program update and status

    The current status of nickel-hydrogen (NiH2) testing ongong at NWSC, Crane In, and The Aerospace Corporation, El Segundo, Ca are described. The objective of this testing is to develop a database for NiH2 battery use in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and support applications in Medium Altitude Orbit (MAO). Individual pressure vessel-type cells are being tested. A minimum of 200 cells (3.5 in diameter and 4.5 in diameter) are included in the test, from four U.S. vendors. As of this date (Nov. 18, 1986) approximately 60 cells have completed preliminary testing (acceptance, characterization, and environmental testing) and have gone into life cycling

    Electronic energy relaxation and transition frequency jumps of single molecules at 30 mK

    Transition frequency jumps for single terrylene molecules in a polyethylene matrix caused by resonant laser irradiation are investigated at 30 mK. These jumps are not accompanied by substantial sample heating. A model for the effect is: proposed, based on the interaction of tunneling two-level systems (TLSs) surrounding the single molecule with high-energy nonthermal phonons emitted by the molecule during electronic energy relaxation. The radius of the effective interaction volume is estimated to be r(m) approximate to 12.5 nm, and the interaction cross section for nonequilibrium phonon -TLS scattering is estimated as similar to 10(-22) cm(-2)

    A microscopic quantum dynamics approach to the dilute condensed Bose gas

    We derive quantum evolution equations for the dynamics of dilute condensed Bose gases. The approach contains, at different orders of approximation, for cases close to equilibrium, the Gross Pitaevskii equation and the first order Hartree Fock Bogoliubov theory. The proposed approach is also suited for the description of the dynamics of condensed gases which are far away from equilibrium.     A massive spiral galaxy in the zone of avoidance

All rights reserved.We report the discovery of a very HI-massive disc galaxy, HIZOAJ0836-43, at a velocity of vhel = 10689kms-1, corresponding to a distance of 148Mpc (assuming H0 = 75kms-1Mpc-1). It was found during the course of a systematic HI survey of the southern Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) (|b| <= 5°) with the multibeam system at the 64-m Parkes radio telescope. Follow-up observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array reveal an extended HI disc. We derive an HI mass of 7.5 × 1010Msolar. Using the HI radius, we estimate a total dynamical mass of 1.4 × 1012Msolar, similar to the most massive known disc galaxies such as Malin1. HIZOAJ0836-43 lies deep in the ZOA where the optical extinction is very high, AB = 9.8mag. However, in the near-infrared (NIR) wavebands, where the extinction is considerably lower, HIZOAJ0836-43 is clearly detected by both the Deep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky (DENIS) and Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS). Deep Anglo-Australian Telescope NIR (Ks and H band) images show that HIZOAJ0836-43 is an inclined disc galaxy with a prominent bulge (scalelength 2.5arcsec or 1.7kpc), and an extended disc (scalelength 7arcsec or 4.7kpc) which can be traced along the major axis out to a radius of 20arcsec or 13.4kpc (at 20magarcsec-2 in Ks). The HI disc is much more extended, having a radius of 66kpc at 1Msolarpc-2. Detections in the radio continuum at 1.4GHz and at 60μm (IRAS) are consistent with HIZOAJ0836-43 forming stars at a rate of ~35Msolaryr-1. We compare the properties of HIZOAJ0836-43 with those of the most HI-massive galaxies currently known, UGC4288, UGC1752 and Malin1, all of which are classified as giant low surface brightness galaxies.     Identifying Luminous AGN in Deep Surveys: Revised IRAC Selection Criteria

    Spitzer IRAC selection is a powerful tool for identifying luminous AGN. For deep IRAC data, however, the AGN selection wedges currently in use are heavily contaminated by star-forming galaxies, especially at high redshift. Using the large samples of luminous AGN and high-redshift star-forming galaxies in COSMOS, we redefine the AGN selection criteria for use in deep IRAC surveys. The new IRAC criteria are designed to be both highly complete and reliable, and incorporate the best aspects of the current AGN selection wedges and of infrared power-law selection while excluding high redshift star-forming galaxies selected via the BzK, DRG, LBG, and SMG criteria. At QSO-luminosities of log L(2-10 keV) (ergs/s) > 44, the new IRAC criteria recover 75% of the hard X-ray and IRAC-detected XMM-COSMOS sample, yet only 38% of the IRAC AGN candidates have X-ray counterparts, a fraction that rises to 52% in regions with Chandra exposures of 50-160 ks. X-ray stacking of the individually X-ray non-detected AGN candidates leads to a hard X-ray signal indicative of heavily obscured to mildly Compton-thick obscuration (log N_H (cm^-2) = 23.5 +/- 0.4). While IRAC selection recovers a substantial fraction of luminous unobscured and obscured AGN, it is incomplete to low-luminosity and host-dominated AGN.Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, full resolution version available at http://www.stsci.edu/~donley/iragn_paper

    HST Morphologies of z ~ 2 Dust-Obscured Galaxies II: Bump Sources

    We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of 22 ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z~2 with extremely red R-[24] colors (called dust-obscured galaxies, or DOGs) which have a local maximum in their spectral energy distribution (SED) at rest-frame 1.6um associated with stellar emission. These sources, which we call "bump DOGs", have star-formation rates of 400-4000 Msun/yr and have redshifts derived from mid-IR spectra which show strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission --- a sign of vigorous on-going star-formation. Using a uniform morphological analysis, we look for quantifiable differences between bump DOGs, power-law DOGs (Spitzer-selected ULIRGs with mid-IR SEDs dominated by a power-law and spectral features that are more typical of obscured active galactic nuclei than starbursts), sub-millimeter selected galaxies (SMGs), and other less-reddened ULIRGs from the Spitzer extragalactic First Look Survey (XFLS). Bump DOGs are larger than power-law DOGs (median Petrosian radius of 8.4 +/- 2.7 kpc vs. 5.5 +/- 2.3 kpc) and exhibit more diffuse and irregular morphologies (median M_20 of -1.08 +/- 0.05 vs. -1.48 +/- 0.05). These trends are qualitatively consistent with expectations from simulations of major mergers in which merging systems during the peak star-formation rate period evolve from M_20 = -1.0 to M_20 = -1.7. Less obscured ULIRGs (i.e., non-DOGs) tend to have more regular, centrally peaked, single-object morphologies rather than diffuse and irregular morphologies. This distinction in morphologies may imply that less obscured ULIRGs sample the merger near the end of the peak star-formation rate period. Alternatively, it may indicate that the intense star-formation in these less-obscured ULIRGs is not the result of a recent major merger.Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 22 pages, 8 Figures, 7 Table

    Topology-Induced Critical Current Enhancement in Josephson Networks

    We investigate the properties of Josephson junction networks with inhomogeneous architecture. The networks are shaped as "quare comb" planar lattices on which Josephson junctions link superconducting islands arranged in the plane to generate the pertinent topology. Compared to the behavior of reference linear arrays, the temperature dependencies of the Josephson currents of the branches of the network exhibit relevant differences.     We report the discovery of a very HI-massive disk galaxy, HIZOA J0836-43, at a velocity of v_hel = 10689 km/s, corresponding to a distance of 148 Mpc (assuming H_0=75 km/s/Mpc). HIZOA J0836-43 lies deep in the Zone of Avoidance (l, b = 262.48 deg, -1.64 deg) where the optical extinction is very high, A_B = 9.8. However, in the near-infrared wavebands, where the extinction is considerably lower, HIZOA J0836-43 is clearly detected by both DENIS and 2MASS.
