Methicillin-Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci in the Community: High Homology of SCCmec IVa between Staphylococcus epidermidis and Major Clones of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Background. Data on community spread of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MR-CoNS) are scarce. We assessed their potential role as a reservoir of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) IVa, the leading SCCmec subtype in community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA). Methods. Nasal carriage of MR-CoNS was prospectively investigated in 291 adults at hospital admission. MR-CoNS were characterized by SCCmec typing, long-range polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for SCCmec IV, and multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) for Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) strains. Three SCCmec IVa elements were fully sequenced. Results. The carriage rate of MR-CoNS was 19.2% (25.9% and 16.5% in patients with and patients without previous exposure to the health care system, respectively; P = .09). MR-CoNS strains (n=83, including 58 MRSE strains with highly heterogeneous MLVA patterns) carried SCCmec type IVa (n=9, all MRSE), other SCCmec IV subtypes (n=9, including 7 MRSE), other SCCmec types (n=15), and nontypeable SCCmec (n=50). Long-range PCR indicated structural homology between SCCmec IV in MRSE and that in MRSA. Complete sequences of SCCmec IVa from 3 MRSE strains were highly homologous to those available for CA-MRSA, including major clones USA300 and USA400. Conclusions. MR-CoNS are probably disseminated in the community, notably in subjects without previous exposure to the health care system. MRSE, the most prevalent species, may act as a reservoir of SCCmec IVa for CA-MRS

Grid'5000: a large scale and highly reconfigurable grid experimental testbed
Large scale distributed systems such as Grids are difficult to study from theoretical models and simulators only. Most Grids deployed at large scale are production plat-forms that are inappropriate research tools because of their limited reconfiguration, control and monitoring capa-bilities. In this paper, we present Gridâ5000, a 5000 CPU nation-wide infrastructure for research in Grid computing. Gridâ5000 is designed to provide a scientific tool for com-puter scientists similar to the large-scale instruments used by physicists, astronomers, and biologists. We describe the motivations, design considerations, architec-ture, control, and monitoring infrastructure of this experi-mental platform. We present configuration examples and performance results for the reconfiguration subsystem

Introduction to the French GEOTRACES North Atlantic transect (GA01): GEOVIDE cruise
© 2018 Author(s). The GEOVIDE cruise, a collaborative project within the framework of the international GEOTRACES programme, was conducted along the French-led section in the North Atlantic Ocean (Section GA01), between 15 May and 30 June 2014. In this special issue (https://www.biogeosciences.net/special-issue900.html), results from GEOVIDE, including physical oceanography and trace element and isotope cyclings, are presented among 18 articles. Here, the scientific context, project objectives, and scientific strategy of GEOVIDE are provided, along with an overview of the main results from the articles published in the special issue
The MUSE Hubble Ultra Deep Field Survey:II. Spectroscopic redshifts and comparisons to color selections of high-redshift galaxies
We have conducted a two-layered spectroscopic survey (1'x1' ultra deep and
3'x3' deep regions) in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) with the Multi Unit
Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). The combination of a large field of view, high
sensitivity, and wide wavelength coverage provides an order of magnitude
improvement in spectroscopically confirmed redshifts in the HUDF; i.e., 1206
secure spectroscopic redshifts for HST continuum selected objects, which
corresponds to 15% of the total (7904). The redshift distribution extends well
beyond z>3 and to HST/F775W magnitudes as faint as ~30 mag (AB, 1-sigma). In
addition, 132 secure redshifts were obtained for sources with no HST
counterparts that were discovered in the MUSE data cubes by a blind search for
emission-line features. In total, we present 1338 high quality redshifts, which
is a factor of eight increase compared with the previously known spectroscopic
redshifts in the same field. We assessed redshifts mainly with the spectral
features [OII] at z<1.5 (473 objects) and Lya at 2.9<z<6.7 (692 objects). With
respect to F775W magnitude, a 50% completeness is reached at 26.5 mag for ultra
deep and 25.5 mag for deep fields, and the completeness remains >~20% up to
28-29 mag and ~27 mag, respectively. We used the determined redshifts to test
continuum color selection (dropout) diagrams of high-z galaxies. The selection
condition for F336W dropouts successfully captures ~80% of the targeted z~2.7
galaxies. However, for higher redshift selections (F435W, F606W, and F775W
dropouts), the success rates decrease to ~20-40%. We empirically redefine the
selection boundaries to make an attempt to improve them to ~60%. The revised
boundaries allow bluer colors that capture Lya emitters with high Lya
equivalent widths falling in the broadbands used for the color-color selection.
Along with this paper, we release the redshift and line flux catalog.Comment: 26 pages, 26 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A&A (MUSE
