Mass corrections in string theory and lattice field theory
Kaluza-Klein compactifications of higher dimensional Yang-Mills theories
contain a number of four dimensional scalars corresponding to the internal
components of the gauge field. While at tree-level the scalar zero modes are
massless, it is well known that quantum corrections make them massive. We
compute these radiative corrections at 1-loop in an effective field theory
framework, using the background field method and proper Schwinger-time
regularization. In order to clarify the proper treatment of the sum over
KK--modes in the effective field theory approach, we consider the same problem
in two different UV completions of Yang-Mills: string theory and lattice field
theory. In both cases, when the compactification radius is much bigger than
the scale of the UV completion (), we recover a mass
renormalization that is independent of the UV scale and agrees with the one
derived in the effective field theory approach. These results support the idea
that the value of the mass corrections is, in this regime, universal for any UV
completion that respects locality and gauge invariance. The string analysis
suggests that this property holds also at higher loops. The lattice analysis
suggests that the mass of the adjoint scalars appearing in
Super Yang-Mills is highly suppressed due to an interplay between the
higher-dimensional gauge invariance and the degeneracy of bosonic and fermionic
degrees of freedom.Comment: 27 page
On the classification of OADP varieties
The main purpose of this paper is to show that OADP varieties stand at an
important crossroad of various main streets in different disciplines like
projective geometry, birational geometry and algebra. This is a good reason for
studying and classifying them. Main specific results are: (a) the
classification of all OADP surfaces (regardless to their smoothness); (b) the
classification of a relevant class of normal OADP varieties of any dimension,
which includes interesting examples like lagrangian grassmannians. Following
[PR], the equivalence of the classification in (b) with the one of
quadro-quadric Cremona transformations and of complex, unitary, cubic Jordan
algebras are explained.Comment: 13 pages. Dedicated to Fabrizio Catanese on the occasion of his 60th

Global entrainment of transcriptional systems to periodic inputs
This paper addresses the problem of giving conditions for transcriptional
systems to be globally entrained to external periodic inputs. By using
contraction theory, a powerful tool from dynamical systems theory, it is shown
that certain systems driven by external periodic signals have the property that
all solutions converge to a fixed limit cycle. General results are proved, and
the properties are verified in the specific case of some models of
transcriptional systems. The basic mathematical results needed from contraction
theory are proved in the paper, making it self-contained
A Unified Approach to Solvable Models of Dilaton Gravity in Two-Dimensions Based on Symmetry
A large class of solvable models of dilaton gravity in two space-time
dimensions, capable of describing black hole geometry, are analyzed in a
unified way as non-linear sigma models possessing a special symmetry. This
symmetry, which can be neatly formulated in the target-space-covariant manner,
allows one to decompose the non-linearly interacting dilaton-gravity system
into a free field and a field satisfying the Liouville equation with in general
non-vanishing cosmological term. In this formulation, all the existent models
are shown to fall into the category with vanishing cosmological constant.
General analysis of the space-time structureinduced by a matter shock wave is
performed and new models, with and without the cosmological term, are
discussed.Comment: 29 pages, LaTe
Quantum Black Hole Evaporation
We investigate a recently proposed model for a full quantum description of
two-dimensional black hole evaporation, in which a reflecting boundary
condition is imposed in the strong coupling region. It is shown that in this
model each initial state is mapped to a well-defined asymptotic out-state,
provided one performs a certain projection in the gravitational zero mode
sector. We find that for an incoming localized energy pulse, the corresponding
out-going state contains approximately thermal radiation, in accordance with
semi-classical predictions. In addition, our model allows for certain acausal
strong coupling effects near the singularity, that give rise to corrections to
the Hawking spectrum and restore the coherence of the out-state. To an
asymptotic observer these corrections appear to originate from behind the
receding apparent horizon and start to influence the out-going state long
before the black hole has emitted most of its mass. Finally, by putting the
system in a finite box, we are able to derive some algebraic properties of the
scattering matrix and prove that the final state contains all initial
information.Comment: 37 pages (figs 2 and 3 included as uuencoded compressed tar file),

Microscopic unitary description of tidal excitations in high-energy string-brane collisions
The eikonal operator was originally introduced to describe the effect of
tidal excitations on higher-genus elastic string amplitudes at high energy. In
this paper we provide a precise interpretation for this operator through the
explicit tree-level calculation of generic inelastic transitions between closed
strings as they scatter off a stack of parallel Dp-branes. We perform this
analysis both in the light-cone gauge, using the Green-Schwarz vertex, and in
the covariant formalism, using the Reggeon vertex operator. We also present a
detailed discussion of the high energy behaviour of the covariant string
amplitudes, showing how to take into account the energy factors that enhance
the contribution of the longitudinally polarized massive states in a simple
way.Comment: 58 page
Search for supersymmetry in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV in final states with jets and missing transverse momentum
Results are reported from a search for supersymmetric particles in the final state with multiple jets and large missing transverse momentum. The search uses a sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector in 2016â2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb, representing essentially the full LHC Run 2 data sample. The analysis is performed in a four-dimensional search region defined in terms of the number of jets, the number of tagged bottom quark jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta, and the magnitude of the vector sum of jet transverse momenta. No significant excess in the event yield is observed relative to the expected background contributions from standard model processes. Limits on the pair production of gluinos and squarks are obtained in the framework of simplified models for supersymmetric particle production and decay processes. Assuming the lightest supersymmetric particle to be a neutralino, lower limits on the gluino mass as large as 2000 to 2310 GeV are obtained at 95% confidence level, while lower limits on the squark mass as large as 1190 to 1630 GeV are obtained, depending on the production scenario.Individuals have received support from the Marie-Curie program and the European Research Council and Horizon 2020 Grant, contract No. 675440 (European Union); the Leventis Foundation; the A.P. A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007
We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts
associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal
new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy,
particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the
underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the
period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first
science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed
for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with
the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place
limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave
emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of
merger and core-collapse events.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, science summary page at

The variable finesse locking technique
Virgo is a power recycled Michelson interferometer, with 3 km long Fabry-Perot cavities in the arms. The locking of the interferometer has been obtained with an original lock acquisition technique. The main idea is to lock the instrument away from its working point. Lock is obtained by misaligning the power recycling mirror and detuning the Michelson from the dark fringe. In this way, a good fraction of light escapes through the antisymmetric port and the power build-up inside the recycling cavity is extremely low. The benefit is that all the degrees of freedom are controlled when they are almost decoupled, and the linewidth of the recycling cavity is large. The interferometer is then adiabatically brought on to the dark fringe. This technique is referred to as variable finesse, since the recycling cavity is considered as a variable finesse Fabry-Perot. This technique has been widely tested and allows us to reach the dark fringe in few minutes, in an essentially deterministic way
