    What Good is Positive Business?

    Get PDF
Current economic forces, combined with powerful social forces, have created a shifting paradigm of value for markets and organizations around the world. Simply making money – regardless of the social costs – will no longer suffice as a definition of success for a country, a business or even for most individuals, as the human and environmental price becomes increasingly expensive and unsustainable. Now more than ever we need a revolution of new theories and ideologies to help us define and discover the “good society” of the future. Humbly the authors of this paper propose a new theory of business – Theory P – and a means to test its applications – positive business – to advance this revolution by developing more positive leaders, employees and institutions. Grounded in the learnings from the great business thinkers and the leading “people” scientists of our time, we have blended organizational scholarship, positive psychology and positive organizational scholarship together to ask “What good is positive business?” We hope you find our thinking enjoyable, challenging and provocative. And we welcome feedback and ideas on how we might shape our ideas further

Helminth Parasites of the Wild Turkey in South Dakota

    Get PDF
The original range of the eastern wild turkey included part of South Dakota. However, they disappeared from the state by 1920 and were not reintroduced until 1948. Up until this point, little work has been done concerning the macroscopic endoparasites of wild turkeys in any region, and no work of this nature has been undertaken in South Dakota. Therefore, the South Dakota Department of Game, fish, and parks entered into a cooperative arrangement with South Dakota State College to determine the incidence and distribution of helminths in wild turkeys of western South Dakota. In 1958, 198 turkeys harvested by hunters were examined and form the basis for this study. Of the 198 viscera collected, 85.35 per cent contained parasites. Castodes are the most common endoparasites infecting the wild turkey flock in South Dakota’s Black hills

Towards a psychological framework on time perception in patients with chronic tinnitus

Although disabling tinnitus is a chronic auditory phantom sensation, current knowledge on time perception (i.e., subjective time) in sufferers is limited and unsystematic. This theoretical analysis provides a first approach to this topic, highlighting the heterogeneity of time perception in humans as shown in various research areas. This heterogeneity is inherently related to goal attainment. Our immediate perception of time is restricted to present moment and recent past, whereas our sense of time is mostly future-oriented and represented as our past in a mental time line. The heterogeneity of time translates into a tension between anticipated changes one wants to see happen and full commitment that is required to goal attainment. Tinnitus sufferers are intensely aware of this tension in their self-perception. Their most compelling desire is that they no longer perceive tinnitus, but they get closer to this goal only by avoiding to put all their thoughts into it. Our analysis provides new perspectives on acceptance of tinnitus in relation to this time paradox. Building on the Tolerance model and the role of self-awareness in time perception, we contend that the main way for patients to gain long-term self-confidence is to engage in the present moment. Attention to this attitude is obscured in chronic sufferers by worries and ruminations associated with the ongoing presence of tinnitus. We provide arguments that time perception is a social perception, emphasizing the role of rewarding interactions in helping sufferers to overcome the feeling of being prevented from living in the moment. In the course of improvement towards acceptance, different changes in time perception are hypothesized that promote individuals’ disengagement from unattainable goal (i.e., tinnitus suppression). A framework for future research is proposed, which distinguishes individuals’ behaviors and associated emotions in relation to the time paradox

    Reaching for Cultural Change

What is the burden of tinnitus?

    Get PDF
Introduction: Tinnitus is a complex experience that often occurs alongside other health conditions, including hearing loss. In the UK, as in other western countries, patterns of health are changing with a rise in multi-morbidity and complexity of health conditions. As we age, we can expect to live with multiple health conditions. Burden of illness has long been recognised. Less well recognised is the burden that accumulates from the treatment of health conditions. Methods: This qualitative thematic analysis of patient accounts described the cumulative burdens of tinnitus, both the experience of hearing the tinnitus and from the treatments undertaken. Between 2017-8 we conducted interviews with 38 participants who were help-seekers in a range of contrasting UK clinical services (Physician led, Audiology led and Hearing Therapy led). We examined these interview data using reflexive thematic analysis methods to identify and explore the cumulative burdens for those who live with and seek help for their tinnitus. Specifically, we used six phased approach to determine and group themes. Results: The themes provide a coherent description of the nature of the burden that people with tinnitus experience. Discussion: In tinnitus, as with most chronic health conditions, the largest treatment workload is devolved to the patient. Patients are required to implement treatments, learn about tinnitus and find new ways of coping. Yet this work happens invisibly, without recognition from clinicians who measure outcomes but not the efforts made to achieve outcomes. Patient-centred care depends upon the recognition of the cumulative burdens that patients experience

Pitch Comparisons between Electrical Stimulation of a Cochlear Implant and Acoustic Stimuli Presented to a Normal-hearing Contralateral Ear

    Get PDF
Four cochlear implant users, having normal hearing in the unimplanted ear, compared the pitches of electrical and acoustic stimuli presented to the two ears. Comparisons were between 1,031-pps pulse trains and pure tones or between 12 and 25-pps electric pulse trains and bandpass-filtered acoustic pulse trains of the same rate. Three methods—pitch adjustment, constant stimuli, and interleaved adaptive procedures—were used. For all methods, we showed that the results can be strongly influenced by non-sensory biases arising from the range of acoustic stimuli presented, and proposed a series of checks that should be made to alert the experimenter to those biases. We then showed that the results of comparisons that survived these checks do not deviate consistently from the predictions of a widely-used cochlear frequency-to-place formula or of a computational cochlear model. We also demonstrate that substantial range effects occur with other widely used experimental methods, even for normal-hearing listeners

Lead-free piezoceramics - Where to move on?

    Get PDF
Lead-free piezoceramics aiming at replacing the market-dominant lead-based ones have been extensively searched for more than a decade worldwide. Some noteworthy outcomes such as the advent of commercial products for certain applications have been reported, but the goal, i.e., the invention of a lead-free piezocermic, the performance of which is equivalent or even superior to that of PZT-based piezoceramics, does not seem to be fulfilled yet. Nevertheless, the academic effort already seems to be culminated, waiting for a guideline to a future research direction. We believe that a driving force for a restoration of this research field needs to be found elsewhere, for example, intimate collaborations with related industries. For this to be effectively realized, it would be helpful for academic side to understand the interests and demands of the industry side as well as to provide the industry with new scientific insights that would eventually lead to new applications. Therefore, this review covers some of the issues that are to be studied further and deeper, so-to-speak, lessons from the history of piezoceramics, and some technical issues that could be useful in better understanding the industry demands. As well, the efforts made in the industry side will be briefly introduced for the academic people to catch up with the recent trends and to be guided for setting up their future research direction effectively.ope
