Far-infrared photometry of compact extragalactic sources: OJ 187 and BL Lac
The 50 and 100 micron emissions of OJ 287 were detected and upper limits for BL Lac were obtained. These first measurements of two BL Lac objects in the far-infrared show them to be similar to the few quasars previously observed in the far-infrared. In particular, there is no evidence for significant dust emission, and the lambda approximately 100 micron flux density fits on a smooth line joining the near-infrared and millimeter continuum fluxes. The implications of the results for models of the sources are discussed briefly
An infrared study of the bi-polar outflow region GGD 12-15
Infrared observations from 1 to 100 microns are presented for the region associated with a bipolar CO outflow source near the nebulous objects GGD 12 to 15. A luminous far-infrared source was found associated with a radio-continuum source in the area. This object appears to be a compact HII region around a nearly main-sequence BO star. A faint 20 micron source was also discovered at the position of an H2O maser 3O deg northwest of the HII region. This object appears to be associated with but not coincident with a 2 micron reflection nebula. This structure serves as evidence for a non-spherically symmetric, possibly disk-like dust distribution around the exciting star for the maser. This object probably powers the bi-polar CO outflow although its luminosity is less than 10% that of the star which excites the compact HII region. A number of other 2 micron sources found in the area are probably members of a recently formed cluster
Clifford algebras and new singular Riemannian foliations in spheres
Using representations of Clifford algebras we construct indecomposable
singular Riemannian foliations on round spheres, most of which are
non-homogeneous. This generalizes the construction of non-homogeneous

Probing the embedded YSOs of the R CrA region through VLT-ISAAC spectroscopy
Near IR spectra obtained with ISAAC at VLT, have been used to pose
constraints on the evolutionary state and accretion properties of a sample of
five embedded YSOs located in the R CrA core. This sample includes three Class
I sources (HH100 IR, IRS2 and IRS5), and two sources with NIR excesses (IRS6
and IRS3). Absorption lines have been detected in the medium resolution spectra
of all the observed targets, together with emission lines likely originating in
the disk-star-wind connected regions. We derived spectral types, veiling and
stellar luminosity of the five observed sources, which in turn have been used
to infer their mass and age adopting pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks. We
find that in HH100 IR and IRS2 most of the bolometric luminosity is due to
accretion, while the other three investigated sources, including the Class I
object IRS5a, present a low accretion activity (L_{acc}/L_{bol} < 0.2). We
observe a general correlation between the accretion luminosity, the IR veiling
and the emission line activity of the sources. A correlation between the
accretion activity and the spectral energy distribution slope is recognizable
but with the notable exception of IRS5a. Our analysis therefore shows how the
definition of the evolutionary stage of deeply embedded YSOs by means of IR

We report the detection of a possible subsolar mass companion to the triple
young system TY CrA using the NACO instrument at the VLT UT4 during its
commissioning. Assuming for TY CrA a distance similar to that of the close
binary system HD 176386, the photometric spectral type of this fourth stellar
component candidate is consistent with an ~M4 star. We discuss the dynamical
stability of this possible quadruple system as well as the possible location of

The Structure of the DoAr 25 Circumstellar Disk
We present high spatial resolution (< 0.3" = 40\Sigma
\propto r^{-p}$ with p = 0.34, significantly less steep than a steady-state
accretion disk (p = 1) or the often adopted minimum mass solar nebula (p =
1.5). Even though the total mass of material is large (M_d = 0.10 M_sun), the
densities inferred in the inner disk for such a model may be too low to
facilitate any mode of planet formation. However, alternative models with
steeper density gradients (p = 1) can explain the observations equally well if
substantial grain growth in the planet formation region (r < 40 AU) has
occurred. We discuss these data in the context of such models with dust
properties that vary with radius and highlight their implications for
understanding disk evolution and the early stages of planet formation.Comment: ApJL in pres
The prestellar and protostellar population of R Coronae Australis
We present 450 and 850 um maps of R Coronae Australis. We compare the maps to
previous surveys of the region, and shed new light on the previously unknown
nature of the protostellar sources at the centre of the cloud. We clarify the
nature of two millimetre sources previously discovered in lower resolution
data. We identify one new Class 0 protostar that we label SMM 1B, and we
measure the envelope masses of a number of more evolved protostars. We identify
two new prestellar cores that we call SMM 1A and SMM 6.Comment: 8 page
Spectroscopy of Brown Dwarf Candidates in the rho Ophiuchi Molecular Core
We present an analysis of low resolution infrared spectra for 20 brown dwarf
candidates in the core of the Ophiuchi molecular cloud. Fifteen of the
sources display absorption-line spectra characteristic of late-type stars. By
comparing the depths of water vapor absorption bands in our candidate objects
with a grid of M dwarf standards, we derive spectral types which are
independent of reddening. Optical spectroscopy of one brown dwarf candidate
confirms the spectral type derived from the water bands. Combining their
spectral types with published near-infrared photometry, effective temperatures
and bolometric stellar luminosities are derived enabling us to place our sample
on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We compare the positions of the brown dwarf
candidates in this diagram with two sets of theoretical models in order to
estimate their masses and ages. Considering uncertainties in placing the
candidates in the H-R diagram, six objects consistently lie in the brown dwarf
regime and another five objects lie in the transition region between stellar
and substellar objects. The ages inferred for the sample are consistent with
those derived for higher mass association members. Three of the newly
identified brown dwarfs display infrared excesses at =2.2 m
suggesting that young brown dwarfs can have active accretion disks. Comparing
our mass estimates of the brown dwarf candidates with those derived from
photometric data alone suggests that spectroscopy is an essential component of

Prospects for multiwavelength polarization observations of GRB afterglows and the case GRB 030329
We explore the prospects for simultaneous, broad-band, multiwavelength
polarimetric observations of GRB afterglows. We focus on the role of cosmic
dust in GRB host galaxies on the observed percentage polarization of afterglows
in the optical/near-infrared bands as a function of redshift. Our driving point
is the afterglow of GRB 030329, for which we obtained polarimetric data in the
R band and K band simultaneously about 1.5 days after the burst. We argue that
polarimetric observations can be very sensitive to dust in a GRB host, because
dust can render the polarization of an afterglow wavelength-dependent. We
discuss the consequences for the interpretation of observational data and
emphasize the important role of very early polarimetric follow-up observations
in all bands, when afterglows are still bright, to study the physical
properties of dust and magnetic fields in high-z galaxies.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
Low-Mass Star Formation and the Initial Mass Function in the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Core
We have obtained moderate-resolution (R=800-1200) K-band spectra for ~100
stars within and surrounding the cloud core of rho Oph. We have measured
spectral types and continuum veilings and have combined this information with
results from new deep imaging. The IMF peaks at about 0.4 M_sun and slowly
declines to the hydrogen burning limit with a slope of ~-0.5 in logarithmic
units (Salpeter is +1.35). Our lower limits on the numbers of substellar
objects demonstrate that the IMF probably does not fall more steeply below the
hydrogen burning limit, at least down to ~0.02 M_sun. We then make the first
comparison of mass functions of stars and pre-stellar clumps (Motte, Andre, &
Neri) measured in the same region. The similar behavior of the two mass
functions in rho Oph supports the suggestion of Motte et al. and Testi &
Sargent that the stellar mass function in young clusters is a direct product of
the process of cloud fragmentation. After considering the effect of extinction
on the SED classifications of the sample, we find that ~17% of the rho Oph
stars are Class I, implying ~0.1 Myr for the lifetime of this stage. In spectra
separated by two years, we observe simultaneous variability in the Br gamma
emission and K-band continuum veiling for two stars, where the hydrogen
emission is brighter in the more heavily veiled data. This behavior indicates
that the disk may contribute significantly to continuous K-band emission, in
contrast to the proposal that the infalling envelope always dominates. Our
detection of strong 2 micron veiling (r_K=1-4) in several Class II and III
stars, which should have disks but little envelope material, further supports
