The production of quick scoping reviews and rapid evidence assessments: a how to guide
This document contains a brief overview of the different Evidence Reviews (ER) but is written primarily for those intending to commission and/or produce an ER in the form of Quick Scoping Reviews (QSR) or Rapid Evidence Assessments (REA), that lie between literature reviews and SRs in terms of rigour of assessment. These have been found to be well suited to meet the evidence challenges most frequently faced by the authors in meeting policy and practice evidence requirements
The fine line between total and partial tidal disruption events
Flares from tidal disruption events are unique tracers of quiescent black
holes at the centre of galaxies. The appearance of these flares is very
sensitive to whether the star is totally or partially disrupted, and in this
paper we seek to identify the critical distance of the star from the black hole
(r_d) that enables us to distinguish between these two outcomes. We perform
here Mesh-free Finite Mass, traditional, and modern Smoothed Particle
Hydrodynamical simulations of star-black hole close encounters, with the aim of
checking if the value of r_d depends on the simulation technique. We find that
the critical distance (or the so-called critical disruption parameter beta_d)
depends only weakly on the adopted simulation method, being beta_d=0.92\pm 0.02
for a gamma=5/3 polytrope and beta_d=2.01\pm 0.01 for a gamma=4/3 polytrope.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables; accepted to A&
Community service learning: Preparing female students in the United Arab Emirates for the workplace
A learning community where students develop the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for meaningful and successful 21st century work and life is the vision for higher education programs in the Middle East. A successful learning community of faculty members, students, and site supervisors in a variety of community programs are working together to achieve this objective, and are jointly engaged in the pursuit of excellence and the development of human potential. It is Zayed University\u27s goal to assure that students develop the higher-order intellectual capacities and technological skills they will need to succeed in a rapidly changing and increasingly complex world. This chapter describes the model used to meet the challenges faced by first generation female college graduates in the United Arab Emirates, a model that emphasizes community service learning placements and undergraduate research projects. These first generation graduates are also those who are expected to transition into a very conservative work environment. For the majority, community placements provided through this model is the first opportunity through which they are able to have any level of workplace experience. In this chapter we will report on this innovative community service program model experienced by students and will address challenges and successes of this program model which utilizes undergraduate student research, community involvement and the integration of female graduates into the workforce. We will share how this model provided insights into the work experience, as reported in students\u27 journal reflections. An effective service learning program and undergraduate research involvement allowed these graduates to put theory into practice, develop habits of self analysis and reflective thinking, and contribute towards a greater understanding of organizational structures. © 2011, IGI Global
The New Horizons Spacecraft
The New Horizons spacecraft was launched on 19 January 2006. The spacecraft
was designed to provide a platform for seven instruments that will collect and
return data from Pluto in 2015. The design drew on heritage from previous
missions developed at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory
(APL) and other missions such as Ulysses. The trajectory design imposed
constraints on mass and structural strength to meet the high launch
acceleration needed to reach the Pluto system prior to the year 2020. The
spacecraft subsystems were designed to meet tight mass and power allocations,
yet provide the necessary control and data handling finesse to support data
collection and return when the one-way light time during the Pluto flyby is 4.5
hours. Missions to the outer solar system require a radioisotope thermoelectric
generator (RTG) to supply electrical power, and a single RTG is used by New
Horizons. To accommodate this constraint, the spacecraft electronics were
designed to operate on less than 200 W. The spacecraft system architecture
provides sufficient redundancy to provide a probability of mission success of
greater than 0.85, even with a mission duration of over 10 years. The
spacecraft is now on its way to Pluto, with an arrival date of 14 July 2015.
Initial inflight tests have verified that the spacecraft will meet the design

Funding Source and Research Report Quality in Nutrition Practice-Related Research
BACKGROUND: The source of funding is one of many possible causes of bias in scientific research. One method of detecting potential for bias is to evaluate the quality of research reports. Research exploring the relationship between funding source and nutrition-related research report quality is limited and in other disciplines the findings are mixed. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine whether types of funding sources of nutrition research are associated with differences in research report quality. DESIGN: A retrospective study of research reporting quality, research design and funding source was conducted on 2539 peer reviewed research articles from the American Dietetic Association's Evidence Analysis Library® database. RESULTS: Quality rating frequency distributions indicate 43.3% of research reports were rated as positive, 50.1% neutral, and 6.6% as negative. Multinomial logistic regression results showed that while both funding source and type of research design are significant predictors of quality ratings (χ2 = 118.99, p≤0.001), the model's usefulness in predicting overall research report quality is little better than chance. Compared to research reports with government funding, those not acknowledging any funding sources, followed by studies with University/hospital funding were more likely to receive neutral vs positive quality ratings, OR = 1.85, P <0.001 and OR = 1.54, P<0.001, respectively and those that did not report funding were more likely to receive negative quality ratings (OR = 4.97, P<0.001). After controlling for research design, industry funded research reports were no more likely to receive a neutral or negative quality rating than those funded by government sources. CONCLUSION: Research report quality cannot be accurately predicted from the funding source after controlling for research design. Continued vigilance to evaluate the quality of all research regardless of the funding source and to further understand other factors that affect quality ratings are warranted
Taking MT evaluation metrics to extremes : beyond correlation with human judgments
Automatic Machine Translation (MT) evaluation is an active field of research, with a handful of new metrics devised every year. Evaluation metrics are generally benchmarked against manual assessment of translation quality, with performance measured in terms of overall correlation with human scores. Much work has been dedicated to the improvement of evaluation metrics to achieve a higher correlation with human judgments. However, little insight has been provided regarding the weaknesses and strengths of existing approaches and their behavior in different settings. In this work we conduct a broad meta-evaluation study of the performance of a wide range of evaluation metrics focusing on three major aspects. First, we analyze the performance of the metrics when faced with different levels of translation quality, proposing a local dependency measure as an alternative to the standard, global correlation coefficient. We show that metric performance varies significantly across different levels of MT quality: Metrics perform poorly when faced with low-quality translations and are not able to capture nuanced quality distinctions. Interestingly, we show that evaluating low-quality translations is also more challenging for humans. Second, we show that metrics are more reliable when evaluating neural MT than the traditional statistical MT systems. Finally, we show that the difference in the evaluation accuracy for different metrics is maintained even if the gold standard scores are based on different criteria
Mortality and pulmonary complications in patients undergoing surgery with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection: an international cohort study
Background: The impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on postoperative recovery needs to be understood to inform clinical decision making during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reports 30-day mortality and pulmonary complication rates in patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: This international, multicentre, cohort study at 235 hospitals in 24 countries included all patients undergoing surgery who had SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed within 7 days before or 30 days after surgery. The primary outcome measure was 30-day postoperative mortality and was assessed in all enrolled patients. The main secondary outcome measure was pulmonary complications, defined as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or unexpected postoperative ventilation. Findings: This analysis includes 1128 patients who had surgery between Jan 1 and March 31, 2020, of whom 835 (74·0%) had emergency surgery and 280 (24·8%) had elective surgery. SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed preoperatively in 294 (26·1%) patients. 30-day mortality was 23·8% (268 of 1128). Pulmonary complications occurred in 577 (51·2%) of 1128 patients; 30-day mortality in these patients was 38·0% (219 of 577), accounting for 81·7% (219 of 268) of all deaths. In adjusted analyses, 30-day mortality was associated with male sex (odds ratio 1·75 [95% CI 1·28–2·40], p\textless0·0001), age 70 years or older versus younger than 70 years (2·30 [1·65–3·22], p\textless0·0001), American Society of Anesthesiologists grades 3–5 versus grades 1–2 (2·35 [1·57–3·53], p\textless0·0001), malignant versus benign or obstetric diagnosis (1·55 [1·01–2·39], p=0·046), emergency versus elective surgery (1·67 [1·06–2·63], p=0·026), and major versus minor surgery (1·52 [1·01–2·31], p=0·047). Interpretation: Postoperative pulmonary complications occur in half of patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection and are associated with high mortality. Thresholds for surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic should be higher than during normal practice, particularly in men aged 70 years and older. Consideration should be given for postponing non-urgent procedures and promoting non-operative treatment to delay or avoid the need for surgery.
