    Degenerate Interpretations of O₃ Spectral Features in Exoplanet Atmosphere Observations Due to Stellar UV Uncertainties: A 3D Case Study with TRAPPIST-1 e

    TRAPPIST-1 e is a potentially habitable terrestrial exoplanet orbiting an ultracool M dwarf star and is a key target for observations with the James Webb Space Telescope. One-dimensional photochemical modeling of terrestrial planetary atmospheres has shown the importance of the incoming stellar UV flux in modulating the concentration of chemical species, such as O₃ and H₂O. In addition, three-dimensional (3D) modeling has demonstrated anisotropy in chemical abundances due to transport in tidally locked exoplanet simulations. We use the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model Version 6 (WACCM6), a 3D Earth system model, to investigate how uncertainties in the incident UV flux, combined with transport, affect observational predictions for TRAPPIST-1 e (assuming an initial Earth-like atmospheric composition). We use two semiempirical stellar spectra for TRAPPIST-1 from the literature. The UV flux ratio between them can be as large as a factor of 5000 in some wavelength bins. Consequently, the photochemically produced total O₃ columns differ by a factor of 26. Spectral features of O₃ in both transmission and emission spectra vary between these simulations (e.g., differences of 20 km in the transmission spectrum effective altitude for O₃ at 0.6 ÎŒm). This leads to potential ambiguities when interpreting observations, including overlap with scenarios that assume alternative O₂ concentrations. Hence, to achieve robust interpretations of terrestrial exoplanetary spectra, characterization of the UV spectra of their host stars is critical.     We documented the frequency of pair reunion in Harlequin Ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) on breeding streams in Alberta, and at a molting/wintering area in southwestern British Columbia. As long as their mate is alive, Harlequin Duck pairs reunite on the wintering area and return to the breeding stream together. Pairs reunite even if the female is unsuccessful at breeding the previous season, which suggests that reuniting with the same mate year after year is important. Some males that have lost their mate and fail to re-pair on the wintering area show fidelity to their former breeding site

    We consider the spin-S ferromagnetic Heisenberg model in three dimensions, in the absence of an external field. Spin wave theory suggests that in a suitable temperature regime the system behaves effectively as a system of non-interacting bosons (magnons). We prove this fact at the level of the specific free energy: if S→∞ S \to \infty and the inverse temperature ÎČ→0 \beta \to 0 in such a way that ÎČS \beta S stays constant, we rigorously show that the free energy per unit volume converges to the one suggested by spin wave theory. The proof is based on the localization of the system in small boxes and on upper and lower bounds on the local free energy, and it also provides explicit error bounds on the remainder.Comment: 11 pages, pdfLate

    Climate resilience in marine protected areas and the ‘Protection Paradox’

    Restricting human activities through Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is assumed to create more resilient biological communities with a greater capacity to resist and recover following climate events. Here we review the evidence linking protection from local pressures (e.g., fishing and habitat destruction) with increased resilience. Despite strong theoretical underpinnings, studies have only rarely attributed resilience responses to the recovery of food webs and habitats, and increases in the diversity of communities and populations. When detected, resistance to ocean warming and recovery after extreme events in MPAs have small effect sizes against a backdrop of natural variability. By contrast, large die-offs are well described from MPAs following climate stress events. This may be in part because protection from one set of pressures or drivers (such as fishing) can select for species that are highly sensitive to others (such as warming), creating a ‘Protection Paradox’. Given that climate change is overwhelming the resilience capacity of marine ecosystems, the only primary solution is to reduce carbon emissions. High-quality monitoring data in both space and time can also identify emergent resilience signals that do exist, in combination with adequate reference data to quantify the initial system state. This knowledge will allow networks of diverse protected areas to incorporate spatial refugia against climate change, and identify resilient biological components of natural systems. Sufficient spatial replication further offers insurance against losses in any given MPA, and the possibility for many weak signals of resilience to accumulate

    Choice of tracers for the evaluation of spray deposits

    Tracer substances, used to evaluate spraying effectiveness, ordinarily modify the surface tension of aqueous solutions. This study aimed to establish a method of using tracers to evaluate distribution and amount of spray deposits, adjusted to the surface tension of the spraying solution. The following products were tested: 0.15% Brilliant Blue, 0.15% Saturn Yellow in 0.015% Vixilperse lignosulfonate, and 0.005% sodium fluorescein, and mixtures of Brilliant Blue plus Saturn Yellow and Brilliant Blue plus sodium fluorescein at the same concentrations. Solutions were deposited on citrus leaves and stability was determined by measuring fluorescence and optical density of solutions without drying, dried in the dark and exposed to sunlight for 2, 4 and 8 h. These values were compared to those obtained directly in water. The static surface tension of the tracer solution was determined by weighing droplets formed during a period of 20 to 40 seconds. The Brilliant Blue and Saturn Yellow mixture at 0.15% was stable under all conditions tested. It was not absorbed by the leaves and maintained the same surface tension as that of water, thus permitting concentration adjustment to the same levels used for agrochemical products, and allowing the development of a qualitative method based on visual evaluation of the distribution of the pigment under ultraviolet light and of a quantitative method based on the determination of the amount of the dye deposited in the same solution. Spray deposition could be evaluated at different surface tensions of the spraying solution, simulating the effect of agrochemical formulations

    Search for Higgs bosons decaying to tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

    We present a search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1, were collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set upper limits at the 95% C.L. on the product of production cross section and branching ratio for a scalar resonance decaying into tautau pairs, and we then interpret these limits as limits on the production of Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and as constraints in the MSSM parameter space.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL

    Measurement of three-jet differential cross sections d sigma-3jet / d M-3jet in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

    We present the first measurement of the inclusive three-jet differential cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the three jets with the largest transverse momenta in an event in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The measurement is made in different rapidity regions and for different jet transverse momentum requirements and is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb^{-1} collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are used to test the three-jet matrix elements in perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant.     Search for pair production of the scalar top quark in muon+tau final states

    We present a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks (t~1\tilde{t}_{1}), the lightest supersymmetric partners of the top quarks, in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of {7.3 fb−1fb^{-1}} collected with the \dzero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Each scalar top quark is assumed to decay into a bb quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino (Îœ~\tilde{\nu}). We investigate final states arising from t~1t~1ˉ→bbˉΌτΜ~Îœ~\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}\mu\tau \tilde{\nu} \tilde{\nu} and t~1t~1ˉ→bbˉττΜ~Îœ~\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}\tau\tau \tilde{\nu} \tilde{\nu}. With no significant excess of events observed above the background expected from the standard model, we set exclusion limits on this production process in the (mt~1m_{\tilde{t}_{1}},mÎœ~m_{\tilde{\nu}}) plane.Comment: Submitted to Phys.     Measurements of inclusive W+jets production rates as a function of jet transverse momentum in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

    This Letter describes measurements of inclusive W (--> e nu) + n jet cross sections (n = 1-4), presented as total inclusive cross sections and differentially in the nth jet transverse momentum. The measurements are made using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb-1 collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and achieve considerably smaller uncertainties on W +jets production cross sections than previous measurements. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations in the n =1-3 jet multiplicity bins and to leading order pQCD calculations in the 4-jet bin. The measurements are generally in agreement with pQCD predictions, although certain regions of phase space are identified where the calculations could be improved

    Measurement of the ttbar production cross section using dilepton events in ppbar collisions

    We present a measurement of the ttbar production cross section sigma(ttbar) in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using 5.4 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector. We consider final states with at least two jets and two leptons (ee, emu, mumu), and events with one jet for the the emu final state as well. The measured cross section is sigma(ttbar)= 7.36 +0.90-0.79 (stat + syst) pb. This result combined with the cross section measurement in the lepton + jets final state yields sigma(ttbar)=7.56 +0.63-0.56 (stat + syst) pb, which agrees with the standard model expectation. The relative precision of 8% of this measurement is comparable to the latest theoretical calculations.Comment: 9 pages, published in Phys. Lett.
