Combs, Contact and Chronology : Reconsidering Hair Combs in Early-Historic and Viking-Age Atlantic Scotland
Analysis of an important collection of bone/antler hair combs from Atlantic Scotland has illuminated the chronology of early-medieval Scandinavian settlement in the region. Application of a new typology, identification of variations in manufacturing practice and analysis of spatial patterning throw light on the development of combs traditionally seen as characteristic of early-historic Atlantic Scotland. The application of new techniques of raw material analysis demonstrates the probable use of reindeer antler in combs of ‘native’ style. However, none of these combs is from contexts that can confidently be dated to the 8th century or earlier, and the pattern is indicative of Norse-native coexistence (peaceful or otherwise)in the 9th century, but not before. The comb evidence demonstrates a Scandinavian presence throughout Atlantic Scotland from early in the Viking Age, but also highlights the importance of contact with Ireland and Anglo-Saxon England

New nurses burnout and workplace wellbeing:The influence of authentic leadership and psychological capital
The detrimental effects of burnout on nurses’ health and wellbeing are well documented and positive leadership has been shown to be an important organizational resource for discouraging the development of burnout. Intrapersonal resources also play a protective role against workplace stressors. This study investigated the influence of authentic leadership, an organizational resource, and psychological capital, an intrapersonal resource, on new graduate burnout, occupational satisfaction, and workplace mental health over the first year of employment (n = 205). Results supported the protective role of organizational and intrapersonal resources against burnout, job dissatisfaction, and mental health. © 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier GmbH. A categorical semantics for causal structure
We present a categorical construction for modelling causal structures within
a general class of process theories that include the theory of classical
probabilistic processes as well as quantum theory. Unlike prior constructions
within categorical quantum mechanics, the objects of this theory encode
fine-grained causal relationships between subsystems and give a new method for
expressing and deriving consequences for a broad class of causal structures. We
show that this framework enables one to define families of processes which are
consistent with arbitrary acyclic causal orderings. In particular, one can
define one-way signalling (a.k.a. semi-causal) processes, non-signalling
processes, and quantum -combs. Furthermore, our framework is general enough
to accommodate recently-proposed generalisations of classical and quantum
theory where processes only need to have a fixed causal ordering locally, but
globally allow indefinite causal ordering.
To illustrate this point, we show that certain processes of this kind, such
as the quantum switch, the process matrices of Oreshkov, Costa, and Brukner,
and a classical three-party example due to Baumeler, Feix, and Wolf are all
instances of a certain family of processes we refer to as in
the appropriate category of higher-order causal processes. After defining these
families of causal structures within our framework, we give derivations of

Band-collision gel electrophoresis.
Electrophoretic mobility shift assays are widely used in gel electrophoresis to study binding interactions between different molecular species loaded into the same well. However, shift assays can access only a subset of reaction possibilities that could be otherwise seen if separate bands of reagent species might instead be collisionally reacted. Here, we adapt gel electrophoresis by fabricating two or more wells in the same lane, loading these wells with different reagent species, and applying an electric field, thereby producing collisional reactions between propagating pulse-like bands of these species, which we image optically. For certain pairs of anionic and cationic dyes, propagating bands pass through each other unperturbed; yet, for other pairs, we observe complexing and precipitation reactions, indicating strong attractive interactions. We generalize this band-collision gel electrophoresis (BCGE) approach to other reaction types, including acid-base, ligand exchange, and redox, as well as to colloidal species in passivated large-pore gels
