Lectures on BCOV holomorphic anomaly equations
The present article surveys some mathematical aspects of the BCOV holomorphic
anomaly equations introduced by Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri and Vafa. It grew
from a series of lectures the authors gave at the Fields Institute in the
Thematic Program of Calabi-Yau Varieties in the fall of 2013.Comment: reference added, typos correcte
On the Crepant Resolution Conjecture in the Local Case
In this paper we analyze four examples of birational transformations between
local Calabi-Yau 3-folds: two crepant resolutions, a crepant partial
resolution, and a flop. We study the effect of these transformations on
genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants, proving the
Coates-Corti-Iritani-Tseng/Ruan form of the Crepant Resolution Conjecture in
each case. Our results suggest that this form of the Crepant Resolution
Conjecture may also hold for more general crepant birational transformations.
They also suggest that Ruan's original Crepant Resolution Conjecture should be
modified, by including appropriate "quantum corrections", and that there is no
straightforward generalization of either Ruan's original Conjecture or the
Cohomological Crepant Resolution Conjecture to the case of crepant partial
resolutions. Our methods are based on mirror symmetry for toric orbifolds.Comment: 27 pages. This is a substantially revised and shortened version of my

Low-Mass Baryon-Antibaryon Enhancements in B Decays
The nature of low-mass baryon-antibaryon enhancements seen in B decays is
explored. Three possibilities include (i) states near threshold as found in a
model by Nambu and Jona-Lasinio, (ii) isoscalar states with coupled to a pair of gluons, and (iii) low-mass enhancements favored by the
fragmentation process. Ways of distinguishing these mechanisms using angular
distributions and flavor symmetry are proposed.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, no figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev. D. One

Charmless decays using flavor SU(3) symmetry
The decays of mesons to a pair of charmless pseudoscalar () mesons are
analyzed within a framework of flavor SU(3). Symmetry breaking is taken into
account in tree () amplitudes through ratios of decay constants; exact SU(3)
is assumed elsewhere. Acceptable fits to and
branching ratios and CP asymmetries are obtained with tree, color-suppressed
(), penguin (), and electroweak penguin () amplitudes. Crucial
additional terms for describing processes involving and include
a large flavor-singlet penguin amplitude () as proposed earlier and a
penguin amplitude associated with intermediate and quarks. For
the mode a term associated with intermediate
and quarks also may be needed. Values of the weak phase are
obtained consistent with an earlier analysis of decays, where
denotes a vector meson, and with other analyses of CKM parameters.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure. To be submitted to Phys. Rev. D. Reference

Charmless hadronic decays and new physics effects in the general two-Higgs doublet models
Based on the low-energy effective Hamiltonian with the generalized
factorization, we calculate the new physics contributions to the branching
ratios of the two-body charmless hadronic decays of and mesons
induced by the new gluonic and electroweak charged-Higgs penguin diagrams in
the general two-Higgs doublet models (models I, II and III). Within the
considered parameter space, we find that: (a) the new physics effects from new
gluonic penguin diagrams strongly dominate over those from the new -
and - penguin diagrams; (b) in models I and II, new physics contributions
to most studied B meson decay channels are rather small in size: from -15% to
20%; (c) in model III, however, the new physics enhancements to the
penguin-dominated decay modes can be significant, , and
therefore are measurable in forthcoming high precision B experiments; (d) the
new physics enhancements to ratios {\cal B}(B \to K \etap) are significant in
model III, , and hence provide a simple and plausible new
physics interpretation for the observed unexpectedly large B \to K \etap
decay rates; (e) the theoretical predictions for and
in model III are still consistent with the data
within errors; (f) the significant new physics enhancements to the
branching ratios of and decays are helpful to improve the
agreement between the data and the theoretical predictions; (g) the theoretical
predictions of in the 2HDM's are generally
consistent with experimental measurements and upper limits ()Comment: 55 pages, Latex file, 17 PS and EPS figures. With minor corrections,

Heat transfer and fluid flow over microscale backward and forward facing step: A review
Research on convective heat transfer in the microscale backward-facing step (MBFS) and microscale forward-facing step (MFFS) has been extensively conducted in the past decade. This review summarizes numerous researches on the three topics; the first section focuses on studying the effect of the geometry on the fluid flow and heat transfer behavior. The second and the third sections concentrate on the effect of the inclination angle and the flow regime on the fluid flow and heat transfer enhancement. The purpose of this article is to get a clear view and detailed summary of the influence of several parameters such as the geometrical specifications, type of fluids and boundary conditions. The enhancement in the Nusselt number is the main target of such research where correlation equations were developed in numerical and experimental studies are reported
Effective Lagrangian Approach to the Theory of Eta Photoproduction in the Region
We investigate eta photoproduction in the resonance region
within the effective Lagrangian approach (ELA), wherein leading contributions
to the amplitude at the tree level are taken into account. These include the
nucleon Born terms and the leading -channel vector meson exchanges as the
non-resonant pieces. In addition, we consider five resonance contributions in
the - and - channel; besides the dominant , these are:
and . The amplitudes for the
and the photoproduction near threshold have significant
differences, even as they share common contributions, such as those of the
nucleon Born terms. Among these differences, the contribution to the
photoproduction of the -channel excitation of the is the most
significant. We find the off-shell properties of the spin-3/2 resonances to be
important in determining the background contributions. Fitting our effective
amplitude to the available data base allows us to extract the quantity
, characteristic of the
photoexcitation of the resonance and its decay into the
-nucleon channel, of interest to precise tests of hadron models. At the
photon point, we determine it to be from
the old data base, and from a
combination of old data base and new Bates data. We obtain the helicity
amplitude for to be from the old data base, and from the combination of the old data base and new Bates
data, compared with the results of the analysis of pion photoproduction
yielding , in the same units.Comment: 43 pages, RevTeX, 9 figures available upon request, to appear in

Improving lung health in low-income and middle-income countries: from challenges to solutions
Low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear a disproportionately high burden of the global morbidity and mortality caused by chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, and post-tuberculosis lung disease. CRDs are strongly associated with poverty, infectious diseases, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and contribute to complex multi-morbidity, with major consequences for the lives and livelihoods of those affected. The relevance of CRDs to health and socioeconomic wellbeing is expected to increase in the decades ahead, as life expectancies rise and the competing risks of early childhood mortality and infectious diseases plateau. As such, the World Health Organization has identified the prevention and control of NCDs as an urgent development issue and essential to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. In this Review, we focus on CRDs in LMICs. We discuss the early life origins of CRDs; challenges in their prevention, diagnosis, and management in LMICs; and pathways to solutions to achieve true universal health coverage
Search for resonances in the mass distribution of jet pairs with one or two jets identified as b-jets in protonâproton collisions at âs=13TeV with the ATLAS detector
Searches for high-mass resonances in the dijet invariant mass spectrum with one or two jets identi-fied as b-jets are performed using an integrated luminosity of 3.2fbâ1of protonâproton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of âs=13TeVrecorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Noevidence of anomalous phenomena is observed in the data, which are used to exclude, at 95%credibility level, excited bâquarks with masses from 1.1TeVto 2.1TeVand leptophobic Z bosons with masses from 1.1TeVto 1.5TeV. Contributions of a Gaussian signal shape with effective cross sections ranging from approximately 0.4 to 0.001pb are also excluded in the mass range 1.5â5.0TeV
