Role of Candida species from HIV infected children in enamel caries lesions: an in vitro study

Objectives This study analyzed the capacity of Candida spp. from dental biofilm of HIV infected (HIV+) children to demineralize primary molar enamel in vitro by Transversal Microhardness (TMH), Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) and the quantity of calcium ions (Ca2+) released from the enamel. Material and Methods Candida spp. samples were isolated from the supragingival biofilm of HIV+ children. A hundred and forty (140) enamel blocks were randomly assigned to six groups: biofilm formed by C. albicans (Group 1); mixed biofilm formed by C. albicans and C. tropicalis (Group 2); mixed biofilm formed by C. albicans and C. parapsilosis (Group 3); mixed biofilm formed by C. albicans, C. parapsilosis and C. glabrata (Group 4); biofilm formed by C. albicans ATCC (Group 5) and medium without Candida (Group 6). Enamel blocks from each group were removed on days 3, 5, 8 and 15 after biofilm formation to evaluate the TMH and images of enamel were analyzed by PLM. The quantity of Ca2+ released, from Groups 1 and 6, was determined using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The SPSS program was used for statistical analysis and the significance level was 5%. Successful management of temporomandibular joint ankylosis after relapse in childhood

Objective: to describe the successful surgical management of a reankylosis in a 9 years old girl. Case report: when the patient was 3 years old she underwent arthroplasty of the right temporal muscle but presented a relapse due to the lack of cooperation during physiotherapy. The oral exam revealed a severe limitation of mouth opening (0.0mm), low weight for her age (19kg-P10%), bad oral hygiene and difficulties in socializing. The child was submitted to excision of the ankylotic mass and resection of the condyle (condylectomy) and reconstruction with a costochondral graft followed by aggressive postsurgical physiotherapy. After 7 months of specialized and home physiotherapy, the patient presented a mouth opening of 25 mm, and had increased weight significantly. Conclusion: the correct follow up was essential for the success of the surgical intervention and improvement in the child’s quality-of-life

Prevalence of caries and its correlation with clinical and immunological classification in HIV-infected children

Este estudo tem como objetivo determinar a experiência de cárie em crianças infectadas pelo HIV, correlacionada com a classificação clínica e imunológica (CDC³, 1994). Participaram da pesquisa 92 crianças (50 meninas e 42 meninos), com média de idade de 5,77 ± 3,31 anos (6 meses a 13 anos), com diagnóstico definitivo para o HIV, todos pacientes com atendimento ambulatorial. Foi realizado exame bucal para determinar os índices ceo/CPOD e os dados de história médica foram coletados dos prontuários médicos. Na dentição decídua de crianças mais jovens (até 5 anos), apesar de a prevalência de cárie ter apresentado valores maiores naquelas mais comprometidas clínica e imunologicamente, não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre as diversas categorias de classificação. Nas crianças de maior idade, isto também foi observado, apesar de terem sido encontrados valores de CPOD maiores nas crianças mais doentes.This research aims to determine the relationship between the prevalence of caries and clinical and immunological classification in HIV-infected children. Ninety-two outpatients (42 male and 50 female subjects) with definitive diagnosis of HIV infection took part in this research. The patients were examined in order to determine the prevalence of caries (dmf and DMFT indexes), and medical data were collected from their medical records. The mean age of the subjects was 5.77 years. Although no statistical differences were found, young patients (up to 5 years old) had more caries when they were more clinically and immunologically compromised. A successful dental management in a child with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome:rare case of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome in child

Background: the Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CDLs) is a rare and complex syndrome characterized, basically, by psychomotor retardation associated with a number of congenital malformations. Aims: this paper reports the case of an 11-year-old female child diagnosed with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) and her successful dental management. Case report: the patient had severe mental retardation, definite negative behavior and the clinical findings included oral and physical changes. The patient's oral hygiene was deficient with the presence of calculus and gingivitis, besides several active caries lesions in permanent and deciduous dental elements. The treatment consisted in guidance for caregivers about oral hygiene and diet, and the dental procedures were performed under general anesthesia. Currently, the patient is accompanied by monthly follow-ups. Conclusions: the lack of knowledge about oral hygiene and cariogenic diets was identified as a one of the reasons for the oral diseases present. Due to the need to care for the other more serious and complex health problems, the oral diseases had evolved faster than usual and thus were difficult to treat and maintain thereafter. Under such conditions, the dentist plays a key role within a multidisciplinary team. From the guidance and knowledge provided in the dental clinic, there was a significant improvement in the life quality of the child and her family

Alimentación y salud. Una experiencia de aprendizaje e innovación para la comunidad universitaria UCM a través de la Agenda 2030

Los desequilibrios políticos, económicos y sociales que presenta Colombia y la Región de Antioquia han derivado en altas tasas de inseguridad alimentaria. Este hecho, junto al elevado consumo de alimentos ultraprocesados en detrimento de la alimentación tradicional, está afectando gravemente la salud de la población. A todo ello hay que añadir el impacto del cambio climático y los eventos derivados extremos que comprometen la producción y distribución de alimentos. A través de cinco webinars, el público asistente conocerá de primera mano la importancia de la Cooperación Internacional al Desarrollo y la Agenda 20-30 como pretexto para afrontar la problemática de la inseguridad alimentaria en Antioquia, fenómeno que, pese a haberse hecho más evidente en los últimos años, permanece casi invisible por la mayoría de la población española. Asimismo, se hará especial hincapié en las políticas llevadas a cabo por Colombia para mejorar la alimentación, sin olvidar las consecuencias que están teniendo el cambio climático, los conflictos armados, los estragos generados por la pandemia por COVID-19 o la geopolítica mundial sobre la situación nutricional en la región colombiana

The Research Journey as a Challenge Towards New Trends

The academic community of the department of Risaralda, in its permanent interest in evidencing the results of the research processes that are carried out from the Higher Education Institutions and as a product of the VI meeting of researchers of the department of Risaralda held in November 2021 presents its work: “The journey of research as a challenge towards new trends”, which reflects the result of the latest research and advances in different lines of knowledge in Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology and Information Sciences, which seek to solve and meet the demands of the different sectors. Effectiveness of an intervention for improving drug prescription in primary care patients with multimorbidity and polypharmacy:Study protocol of a cluster randomized clinical trial (Multi-PAP project)

This study was funded by the Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias ISCIII (Grant Numbers PI15/00276, PI15/00572, PI15/00996), REDISSEC (Project Numbers RD12/0001/0012, RD16/0001/0005), and the European Regional Development Fund ("A way to build Europe").Background: Multimorbidity is associated with negative effects both on people's health and on healthcare systems. A key problem linked to multimorbidity is polypharmacy, which in turn is associated with increased risk of partly preventable adverse effects, including mortality. The Ariadne principles describe a model of care based on a thorough assessment of diseases, treatments (and potential interactions), clinical status, context and preferences of patients with multimorbidity, with the aim of prioritizing and sharing realistic treatment goals that guide an individualized management. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a complex intervention that implements the Ariadne principles in a population of young-old patients with multimorbidity and polypharmacy. The intervention seeks to improve the appropriateness of prescribing in primary care (PC), as measured by the medication appropriateness index (MAI) score at 6 and 12months, as compared with usual care. Methods/Design: Design:pragmatic cluster randomized clinical trial. Unit of randomization: family physician (FP). Unit of analysis: patient. Scope: PC health centres in three autonomous communities: Aragon, Madrid, and Andalusia (Spain). Population: patients aged 65-74years with multimorbidity (≥3 chronic diseases) and polypharmacy (≥5 drugs prescribed in ≥3months). Sample size: n=400 (200 per study arm). Intervention: complex intervention based on the implementation of the Ariadne principles with two components: (1) FP training and (2) FP-patient interview. Outcomes: MAI score, health services use, quality of life (Euroqol 5D-5L), pharmacotherapy and adherence to treatment (Morisky-Green, Haynes-Sackett), and clinical and socio-demographic variables. Statistical analysis: primary outcome is the difference in MAI score between T0 and T1 and corresponding 95% confidence interval. Adjustment for confounding factors will be performed by multilevel analysis. All analyses will be carried out in accordance with the intention-to-treat principle. Discussion: It is essential to provide evidence concerning interventions on PC patients with polypharmacy and multimorbidity, conducted in the context of routine clinical practice, and involving young-old patients with significant potential for preventing negative health outcomes. A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.Peer reviewe
