    Responses to stimulation of coronary and carotid baroreceptors and the coronary chemoreflex at different ventricular distending pressures in anaesthetised dogs

    Stimulation of left ventricular mechanoreceptors was believed not only to exert important effects on the circulation, but also to influence the responses to baroreceptor reflexes. However, most previous work is flawed due to inadequate localisation of stimuli to specific reflexogenic areas. In this study, we applied a discrete stimulus to left ventricular mechanoreceptors to examine other reflexes known to effect the circulation. Dogs were anaesthetised, artificially ventilated and a cardiopulmonary bypass established. The pressure distending the left ventricle was controlled through an apical cannula with the aortic valve obstructed by a balloon. Changes in ventricular systolic and end-diastolic pressure had only a small effect on vascular resistance, assessed as perfusion pressure in the systemic circulation (flow constant). Responses to changes in carotid or coronary pressure or to stimulation of chemosensitive afferents by injecting veratridine into the coronary circulation were always much larger. Responses to stimulation of these reflexes were little affected by the level of stimulus to the ventricular receptors. These experiments confirm that responses to stimulation of ventricular mechanoreceptors are very small and show that they remain small at different levels of input to other baroreceptive regions. There was no evidence of interaction between ventricular mechanoreceptor reflexes and carotid or coronary baroreceptors or ventricular chemosensitive reflexes

    Quantifying stratospheric biases and identifying their potential sources in subseasonal forecast systems

    The stratosphere can be a source of predictability for surface weather on timescales of several weeks to months. However, the potential predictive skill gained from stratospheric variability can be limited by biases in the representation of stratospheric processes and the coupling of the stratosphere with surface climate in forecast systems. This study provides a first systematic identification of model biases in the stratosphere across a wide range of subseasonal forecast systems. It is found that many of the forecast systems considered exhibit warm global-mean temperature biases from the lower to middle stratosphere, too strong/cold wintertime polar vortices, and too cold extratropical upper-troposphere/lowerstratosphere regions. Furthermore, tropical stratospheric anomalies associated with the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation tend to decay toward each system¿s climatology with lead time. In the Northern Hemisphere (NH), most systems do not capture the seasonal cycle of extreme-vortex-event probabilities, with an underestimation of sudden stratospheric warming events and an overestimation of strong vortex events in January. In the Southern Hemisphere (SH), springtime interannual variability in the polar vortex is generally underestimated, but the timing of the final breakdown of the polar vortex often happens too early in many of the prediction systems. These stratospheric biases tend to be considerably worse in systems with lower model lid heights. In both hemispheres, most systems with low-top atmospheric models also consistently underestimate the upward wave driving that affects the strength of the stratospheric polar vortex. We expect that the biases identified here will help guide model development for subseasonal-to-seasonal forecast systems and further our understanding of the role of the stratosphere in predictive skill in the troposphere.This work uses S2S Project data.     Global Search for New Physics with 2.0/fb at CDF

    Data collected in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron are searched for indications of new electroweak-scale physics. Rather than focusing on particular new physics scenarios, CDF data are analyzed for discrepancies with the standard model prediction. A model-independent approach (Vista) considers gross features of the data, and is sensitive to new large cross-section physics. Further sensitivity to new physics is provided by two additional algorithms: a Bump Hunter searches invariant mass distributions for "bumps" that could indicate resonant production of new particles; and the Sleuth procedure scans for data excesses at large summed transverse momentum. This combined global search for new physics in 2.0/fb of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV reveals no indication of physics beyond the standard model.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures.     Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons

    We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+, \bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1}) = 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let

    Análise de trilha de componentes de produção primários e secundários em tomateiro do grupo Salada

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as correlações genotípicas e seus desdobramentos em efeitos diretos e indiretos de componentes de produção primários e secundários sobre a produtividade de frutos em acessos de tomateiro, pela análise de trilha. Foram utilizados dados de 20 características, avaliadas em 132 acessos de tomateiro do grupo Salada, do Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Após o diagnóstico de multicolinearidade, oito características foram descartadas, e a análise de trilha foi realizada com: variável principal (produção total de frutos); variáveis primárias (peso médio e número total de frutos); e variáveis secundárias (frutos não comercializáveis, índice de precocidade, comprimento da folha, espessura do pecíolo principal, comprimento e diâmetro do entrenó, número de lóculos, acidez total e sólidos solúveis totais dos frutos). O comprimento da folha, o índice de precocidade e o diâmetro do entrenó apresentaram maior correlação genotípica com a produção total de frutos (0,69; -0,54 e 0,5, respectivamente). A análise de trilha com um único diagrama causal mostrou igual importância das variáveis primárias na determinação da produção. A análise de trilha com dois diagramas causais mostrou que a seleção simultânea do comprimento da folha e do diâmetro do entrenó pode ser uma boa alternativa para a obtenção de ganhos na produção total de frutos

    Global surveillance of cancer survival 1995-2009: analysis of individual data for 25,676,887 patients from 279 population-based registries in 67 countries (CONCORD-2)

    BACKGROUND: Worldwide data for cancer survival are scarce. We aimed to initiate worldwide surveillance of cancer survival by central analysis of population-based registry data, as a metric of the effectiveness of health systems, and to inform global policy on cancer control. METHODS: Individual tumour records were submitted by 279 population-based cancer registries in 67 countries for 25·7 million adults (age 15-99 years) and 75,000 children (age 0-14 years) diagnosed with cancer during 1995-2009 and followed up to Dec 31, 2009, or later. We looked at cancers of the stomach, colon, rectum, liver, lung, breast (women), cervix, ovary, and prostate in adults, and adult and childhood leukaemia. Standardised quality control procedures were applied; errors were corrected by the registry concerned. We estimated 5-year net survival, adjusted for background mortality in every country or region by age (single year), sex, and calendar year, and by race or ethnic origin in some countries. Estimates were age-standardised with the International Cancer Survival Standard weights. FINDINGS: 5-year survival from colon, rectal, and breast cancers has increased steadily in most developed countries. For patients diagnosed during 2005-09, survival for colon and rectal cancer reached 60% or more in 22 countries around the world; for breast cancer, 5-year survival rose to 85% or higher in 17 countries worldwide. Liver and lung cancer remain lethal in all nations: for both cancers, 5-year survival is below 20% everywhere in Europe, in the range 15-19% in North America, and as low as 7-9% in Mongolia and Thailand. Striking rises in 5-year survival from prostate cancer have occurred in many countries: survival rose by 10-20% between 1995-99 and 2005-09 in 22 countries in South America, Asia, and Europe, but survival still varies widely around the world, from less than 60% in Bulgaria and Thailand to 95% or more in Brazil, Puerto Rico, and the USA. For cervical cancer, national estimates of 5-year survival range from less than 50% to more than 70%; regional variations are much wider, and improvements between 1995-99 and 2005-09 have generally been slight. For women diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2005-09, 5-year survival was 40% or higher only in Ecuador, the USA, and 17 countries in Asia and Europe. 5-year survival for stomach cancer in 2005-09 was high (54-58%) in Japan and South Korea, compared with less than 40% in other countries. By contrast, 5-year survival from adult leukaemia in Japan and South Korea (18-23%) is lower than in most other countries. 5-year survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is less than 60% in several countries, but as high as 90% in Canada and four European countries, which suggests major deficiencies in the management of a largely curable disease. INTERPRETATION: International comparison of survival trends reveals very wide differences that are likely to be attributable to differences in access to early diagnosis and optimum treatment. Continuous worldwide surveillance of cancer survival should become an indispensable source of information for cancer patients and researchers and a stimulus for politicians to improve health policy and health-care systems

    Measurement of the Bs Lifetime in Fully and Partially Reconstructed Bs -> Ds- (phi pi-)X Decays in pbar-p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

    We present a measurement of the Bs lifetime in fully and partially reconstructed Bs -> Ds(phi pi)X decays in 1.3 fb-1 of pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We measure tau(Bs) = 1.518 +/- 0.041 (stat.) +/- 0.027 (syst.) ps. The ratio of this result and the world average B0 lifetime yields tau(Bs)/tau(B0) = 0.99 +/-0.03, which is in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    Observation of the Y(4140)Y(4140) structure in the J/ψϕJ/\psi\,\phi Mass Spectrum in B±J/ψϕKB^\pm\to J/\psi\,\phi K cays

    The observation of the Y(4140)Y(4140) structure in B±J/ψϕK±B^\pm\rightarrow J/\psi\,\phi K^\pm decays produced in pˉp\bar{p} p collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96~\TeV is reported with a statistical significance greater than 5 standard deviations. A fit to the J/ψϕJ/\psi\,\phi mass spectrum is performed assuming the presence of a Breit-Wigner resonance. The fit yields a signal of 195+619^{+6}_{-5} resonance events, and resonance mass and width of 4143.4^{+2.9}_{-3.0}(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.6(\mathrm{syst})~\MeVcc and 15.3^{+10.4}_{-6.1}(\mathrm{stat})\pm2.5(\mathrm{syst})~\MeVcc respectively. The parameters of this resonance-like structure are consistent with values reported from an earlier CDF analysis.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submited to Phys. Rev. Let
