    "Sodium chloride consists of sodium and chlorine". This sentence shows a common laboratory jargon statement that experts understand because they know that sodium and chloride ions are meant. Young learners, who learned about sodium and chlorine as dangerous or poisonous substances in their initial lessons, look in vain for gray sodium metal and yellow chlorine gas in common salt: They cannot know what is meant. If we establish on the substance level that sodium and chlorine can be obtained from sodium chloride by melt electrolysis, the statement would be correct. Once ions are known, the correct answer would be on the particle level: "Sodium chloride crystals consist of sodium and chloride ions arranged in an ionic lattice". The article will show more examples of jargon regarding acid-base reactions, will ask professors about using the jargon in their lectures, gives advice for improving Chemistry education

    Using visual scene displays to create a shared communication space for a person with aphasia

    Background: Low-tech visual scene displays (VSDs) combine contextually rich pictures and written text to support the communication of people with aphasia. VSDs create a shared communication space in which a person with aphasia and a communication partner co-construct messages. Aims: The researchers examined the effect of low-tech VSDs on the content and quality of communicative interactions between a person with aphasia and unfamiliar communication partners. Methods & Procedures: One person with aphasia and nine unfamiliar communication partners engaged in short, one-on-one conversations about a specified topic in one of three conditions: shared-VSDs, non-shared-VSDs, and no-VSDs. Data included discourse analysis scores reflecting the conceptual complexity of utterances, content unit analyses of information communication partners gathered from the interaction, and Likert-scale responses from the person with aphasia about his perception of communicative ease and effectiveness. Outcomes & Results: Comparisons made across conditions revealed: (a) the most conversational turns occurred in the shared-VSDs condition; (b) communication partners produced utterances with higher conceptual complexity in the shared-VSDs condition; (c) the person with aphasia conveyed the greatest number of content units in the shared- VSDs condition; and (d) the person with aphasia perceived that information transfer, ease of conversational interaction, and partner understanding were best in the shared-VSDs condition.     Scour Analysis of the Interstate-35 and Cimarron River Crossing Using the FESWMS-2dh and SMS Computer Models

    This study uses the commonly used scour prediction methods to analyze the October 1986 flood which damaged the bridges at the Interstate-35 and Cimarron River crossing. The hydraulic analysis of this site was completed using the FESWMS-2DH computer program. The FESWMS-2DH computer program considers the dynamics of flow in both directions and is well suited to analyze this complex site. The use of this computer program was greatly simplified by using the SMS computer program which allows data to be input and output in graphical environment. The results of this study demonstrate the validity of the commonly used scour equations and the usefulness of the FESWMS-2DH and SMS computer program

    For most aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRS), their cognate tRNA is not obligatory to catalyze amino acid activation, with the exception of four class I (aaRS): arginyl-tRNA synthetase, glutamyl-tRNA synthetase, glutaminyl-tRNA synthetase and class I lysyl-tRNA synthetase. Furthermore, for arginyl-, glutamyl- and glutaminyl-tRNA synthetase, the integrated 3' end of the tRNA is necessary to activate the ATP-PPi exchange reaction. Tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase is a class I aaRS that catalyzes tryptophan activation in the absence of its cognate tRNA. Here we describe mutations located at the appended β1–β2 hairpin and the AIDQ sequence of human tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase that switch this enzyme to a tRNA-dependent mode in the tryptophan activation step. For some mutant enzymes, ATP-PPi exchange activity was completely lacking in the absence of tRNATrp, which could be partially rescued by adding tRNATrp, even if it had been oxidized by sodium periodate. Therefore, these mutant enzymes have strong similarity to arginyl-tRNA synthetase, glutaminyl-tRNA synthetase and glutamyl-tRNA synthetase in their mode of amino acid activation. The results suggest that an aaRS that does not normally require tRNA for amino acid activation can be switched to a tRNA-dependent mode

    Diagnostic Dilemma in a Patient with Jaundice: How to Differentiate between Autoimmune Pancreatitis, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and Pancreas Carcinoma

    A 68-year-old male patient was referred to our institution in May 2011 for a suspected tumor in the pancreatic head with consecutive jaundice. Using magnetic resonance imaging, further differentiation between chronic inflammation and a malignant process was not possible with certainty. Apart from cholestasis, laboratory studies showed increased values for CA 19-9 to 532 U/ml (normal <37 U/ml) and hypergammaglobulinemia (immunoglobulin G, IgG) of 19.3% (normal 8.0–15.8%) with an elevation of the IgG4 subtype to 2,350 mg/l (normal 52–1,250 mg/l). Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography revealed a prominent stenosis of the distal ductus hepaticus communis caused by pancreatic head swelling and also a bihilar stenosis of the main hepatic bile ducts. Cytology demonstrated inflammatory cells without evidence of malignancy. Under suspicion of autoimmune pancreatitis with IgG4-associated cholangitis, immunosuppressive therapy with steroids and azathioprine was started. Follow-up endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography after 3 months displayed regressive development of the diverse stenoses. Jaundice had disappeared and blood values had returned to normal ranges. Moreover, no tumor of the pancreatic head was present in the magnetic resonance control images. Due to clinical and radiological similarities but a consecutive completely different prognosis and therapy, it is of fundamental importance to differentiate between pancreatic cancer and autoimmune pancreatitis. Especially, determination of serum IgG4 levels and associated bile duct lesions induced by inflammation should clarify the diagnosis of autoimmune pancreatitis and legitimate immunosuppressive therapy

    Prenatal exposure to bisphenol A and/or diethylhexyl phthalate alters stress responses in rat offspring in a sex- and dose-dependent manner

    Background: Prenatal exposures to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are correlated with adverse behavioral outcomes, but the effects of combinations of these chemicals are unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the dose-dependent effects of prenatal exposure to EDCs on male and female behavior.Methods: Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were orally dosed with vehicle, bisphenol A (BPA) (5 μg/kg body weight (BW)/day), low-dose (LD) diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) (5 μg/kg BW/day), high-dose (HD) DEHP (7.5 mg/kg BW/day), a combination of BPA and LD-DEHP (B + D (LD)), or a combination of BPA and HD-DEHP (B + D (HD)) on gestational days 6–21. Adult offspring were subjected to the Open Field Test (OFT), Elevated Plus Maze (EPM), and Shock Probe Defensive Burying test (SPDB) in adulthood. Body, adrenal gland, and pituitary gland weights were collected at sacrifice. Corticosterone (CORT) was measured in the serum.Results: Female EDC-exposed offspring showed anxiolytic effects in the OFT, while male offspring were unaffected. DEHP (HD) male offspring demonstrated a feminization of behavior in the EPM. Most EDC-exposed male offspring buried less in the SPDB, while their female counterparts showed reduced shock reactivity, indicating sex-specific maladaptive alterations in defensive behaviors. Additionally, DEHP (LD) males and females and B + D (LD) females displayed increased immobility in this test. DEHP (LD) alone and in combination with BPA led to lower adrenal gland weights, but only in male offspring. Finally, females treated with a mixture of B + D (HD) had elevated CORT levels.Conclusion: Prenatal exposure to BPA, DEHP, or a mixture of the two, affects behavior, CORT levels, and adrenal gland weights in a sex- and dose-dependent manner
