    Mudanças e continuidades: economia florestal, serviços urbanos e unidades domésticas no estuário amazônico

    Nos últimos 30 anos, observa-se no estuário Amazônico o crescimento da população urbana e o aumento da cobertura florestal lado a lado, graças à expansão da economia do açai (Euterpe oleracea), o qual passou de um alimento local e cotidiano para um suplemento alimentar de moda e exóticonuma escala nacional e internacional. Apesar da riqueza gerada por essa economia florestal não madereira, ela não tem trazido o esperado desenvolvimento regional aos municípios nem melhoria de qualidade devida a seus moradores, principalmente pela falta de indústrias locais que agreguem valor ao fruto do açaí. Baseado em um estudo etnográfico e longitudinal na cidade de Ponta de Pedras, na Ilha do Marajó, o artigo visa refletir sobre o desenvolvimento e limites da economia do açaí, seu impactona estruturação das unidades domésticas e nos municípios produtores

    Conflitos e arenas decisórias de megaprojetos de infraestrutura: uma discussão do Porto de São Sebastião ”“ São Paulo/Brasil

    Megaproject approval involves negotiation/decision arenas at different levels, with diverse actors in terms of interests and social resources. This research analyzed the decision-making arena related to the expansion of the Port of São Sebastião-SP ”“ port, located in an environmentally peculiar area, with historical, economic and strategic relevance for regional/national development. Thus, the implications of a tendency of bureaucratization of the environmental arena to the conflicts associated to megaprojects were analyzed. For this, theories on rationalization, conflicts and social arena were adapted. Data included materials from public hearings, media and technical reports, interviews with key actors. The paper discussed the implications of the interactions within each level in the planning and the environmental licensing process in Brazil, demonstrating that the actors with divergent interests adopted different strategies of action to influence the decisions. In addition, organizational elements of the decision-making process have contributed to an unequal, less open and transparent dialogue.A aprovação de megaprojetos envolve arenas de negociação/decisão em diversos níveis, com atores diversos em termos de interesses e recursos sociais. Essa pesquisa analisoua arena decisória referente à expansão do Porto de São Sebastião-SP ”“ porto,inserido em área ambientalmente peculiar, com relevância histórica, econômica eestratégica para o desenvolvimento regional/nacional.Assim, foram analisadasas implicações de uma tendência de burocratização da arena ambientalpara os conflitos associados a megaprojetos. Para isso, foram adaptadas teorias sobre racionalização, conflitos e arena social. Os dados empíricos incluíram materiais de audiências públicas, mídia e relatórios técnicos, entrevistas com atores chaves. O trabalho discutiu as implicações das interações dentro de cada nível no planejamento e no processo de licenciamento ambiental no Brasil, demonstrando que os atores com interesses divergentes adotaram estratégias de ação diferentes para influenciar as decisões. Além disso, elementos organizacionais do processo decisório, contribuíram para um diálogo desigual, menos aberto e transparente

    The global assessment report on biodiversity and ecosystem services: Summary for policy makers

    This report represents a critical assessment, the first in almost 15 years (since the release of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005) and the first ever carried out by an intergovernmental body, of the status and trends of the natural world, the social implications of these trends, their direct and indirect causes, and, importantly, the actions that can still be taken to ensure a better future for all.     The programme on ecosystem change and society (PECS)–a decade of deepening social-ecological research through a place-based focus

    The Programme on Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS) was established in 2011, and is now one of the major international social-ecological systems (SES) research networks. During this time, SES research has undergone a phase of rapid growth and has grown into an influential branch of sustainability science. In this Perspective, we argue that SES research has also deepened over the past decade, and helped to shed light on key dimensions of SES dynamics (e.g. system feedbacks, aspects of system design, goals and paradigms) that can lead to tangible action for solving the major sustainability challenges of our time. We suggest four ways in which the growth of place-based SES research, fostered by networks such as PECS, has contributed to these developments, namely by: 1) shedding light on transformational change, 2) revealing the social dynamics shaping SES, 3) bringing together diverse types of knowledge, and 4) encouraging reflexive researchers

    The IPBES Conceptual Framework - connecting nature and people

    The first public product of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is its Conceptual Framework. This conceptual and analytical tool, presented here in detail, will underpin all IPBES functions and provide structure and comparability to the syntheses that IPBES will produce at different spatial scales, on different themes, and in different regions. Salient innovative aspects of the IPBES Conceptual Framework are its transparent and participatory construction process and its explicit consideration of diverse scientific disciplines, stakeholders, and knowledge systems, including indigenous and local knowledge. Because the focus on co-construction of integrative knowledge is shared by an increasing number of initiatives worldwide, this framework should be useful beyond IPBES, for the wider research and knowledge-policy communities working on the links between nature and people, such as natural, social and engineering scientists, policy-makers at different levels, and decision-makers in different sectors of society

    Height-diameter allometry of tropical forest trees

    Tropical tree height-diameter (H:D) relationships may vary by forest type and region making large-scale estimates of above-ground biomass subject to bias if they ignore these differences in stem allometry. We have therefore developed a new global tropical forest database consisting of 39 955 concurrent H and D measurements encompassing 283 sites in 22 tropical countries. Utilising this database, our objectives were: 1. to determine if H:D relationships differ by geographic region and forest type (wet to dry forests, including zones of tension where forest and savanna overlap). 2. to ascertain if the H:D relationship is modulated by climate and/or forest structural characteristics (e.g. stand-level basal area, A). 3. to develop H:D allometric equations and evaluate biases to reduce error in future local-to-global estimates of tropical forest biomass. Annual precipitation coefficient of variation (PV), dry season length (SD), and mean annual air temperature (TA) emerged as key drivers of variation in H:D relationships at the pantropical and region scales. Vegetation structure also played a role with trees in forests of a high A being, on average, taller at any given D. After the effects of environment and forest structure are taken into account, two main regional groups can be identified. Forests in Asia, Africa and the Guyana Shield all have, on average, similar H:D relationships, but with trees in the forests of much of the Amazon Basin and tropical Australia typically being shorter at any given D than their counterparts elsewhere. The region-environment-structure model with the lowest Akaike's information criterion and lowest deviation estimated stand-level H across all plots to within amedian −2.7 to 0.9% of the true value. Some of the plot-to-plot variability in H:D relationships not accounted for by this model could be attributed to variations in soil physical conditions. Other things being equal, trees tend to be more slender in the absence of soil physical constraints, especially at smaller D. Pantropical and continental-level models provided less robust estimates of H, especially when the roles of climate and stand structure in modulating H:D allometry were not simultaneously taken into account. © 2011 Author(s)
