    The Young Child\u27s Concept of Human Conception and Birth

    The views held by children about the ere at ion and birth of babies are of importance in child development and developmental psychology. However, most of the research done in this area has been of a theoretical nature rather than empirical. The research shows controversy in the child\u27s concept of human conception and birth, and because of this controversy a study was deemed necessary to find out more of what the young child\u27s concept is of human conception and birth. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to attempt to determine the extent of children\u27s awareness of the nature of human conception and birth. The objectives of this study were to investigate the nature of the child\u27s understanding and awareness of human conception and birth, as well as to investigate the influence of such factors as the child\u27s sex and age, and the social class of the family. The hypotheses were that young children would have a realistic awareness and understanding of human conception and birth and that there would be differences between children of different social class backgrounds, children of different sex groups, and children of different age groups in their understanding and awareness of human conception and birth. In order to test these hypotheses, a questionnaire consisting of eleven questions was devised to explore what concepts these young children have i n their awareness and understanding of human conception and birth. The children studied were selected according to age and social class and consisted of sixty children: 20 kindergarten children, 20 nursery school children, and 20 Head Start children. Each of these groups was fairly equal in the number of boys and girls questioned. The questions were administered in the same order. A few of the quest ions were eliminated if the child could not answer a preceding one. The responses to questions were t hen recorded by the frequency of the response. Because of the nature of this study, no statistical data could be applied; rather, the three groups were compared according to their responses and the number given to each response. The results of this study show that young children are realistically aware of human conception and birth but they do not have a full understanding of the total process. This study also reveals a great difference in the children\u27s responses among the social classes studied, with the Head Start children being deviant from the other two groups in that they\u27re much less well informed. Among the different age groups, the older group was better informed than were the younger children. A frequency test was done on the two sex groups, in relation to their response s, but no differences were found

    Pregnancy outcome in thoracic aortic disease data from the Registry Of Pregnancy And Cardiac disease

    BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death during pregnancy with thoracic aortic dissection being one of the main causes. Thoracic aortic disease is commonly related to hereditary disorders and congenital heart malformations such as bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Pregnancy is considered a high risk period in women with underlying aortopathy. METHODS: The ESC EORP Registry Of Pregnancy And Cardiac disease (ROPAC) is a prospective global registry that enrolled 5739 women with pre-existing cardiac disease. With this analysis, we aim to study the maternal and fetal outcome of pregnancy in women with thoracic aortic disease. RESULTS: Thoracic aortic disease was reported in 189 women (3.3%). Half of them were patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS), 26% had a BAV, 8% Turner syndrome, 2% vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and 11% had no underlying genetic defect or associated congenital heart defect. Aortic dilatation was reported in 58% of patients and 6% had a history of aortic dissection. Four patients, of whom three were patients with MFS, had an acute aortic dissection (three type A and one type B aortic dissection) without maternal or fetal mortality. No complications occurred in women with a history of aortic dissection. There was no significant difference in median fetal birth weight if treated with a beta-blocker or not (2960 g (2358-3390 g) vs 3270 g (2750-3570 g), p value 0.25). CONCLUSION: This ancillary analysis provides the largest prospective data review on pregnancy risk for patients with thoracic aortic disease. Overall pregnancy outcomes in women with thoracic aortic disease followed according to current guidelines are good

    Identification of 12 new susceptibility loci for different histotypes of epithelial ovarian cancer.

    To identify common alleles associated with different histotypes of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), we pooled data from multiple genome-wide genotyping projects totaling 25,509 EOC cases and 40,941 controls. We identified nine new susceptibility loci for different EOC histotypes: six for serous EOC histotypes (3q28, 4q32.3, 8q21.11, 10q24.33, 18q11.2 and 22q12.1), two for mucinous EOC (3q22.3 and 9q31.1) and one for endometrioid EOC (5q12.3). We then performed meta-analysis on the results for high-grade serous ovarian cancer with the results from analysis of 31,448 BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers, including 3,887 mutation carriers with EOC. This identified three additional susceptibility loci at 2q13, 8q24.1 and 12q24.31. Integrated analyses of genes and regulatory biofeatures at each locus predicted candidate susceptibility genes, including OBFC1, a new candidate susceptibility gene for low-grade and borderline serous EOC

    Genome-Wide Meta-Analyses of Breast, Ovarian, and Prostate Cancer Association Studies Identify Multiple New Susceptibility Loci Shared by at Least Two Cancer Types.

    UNLABELLED: Breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers are hormone-related and may have a shared genetic basis, but this has not been investigated systematically by genome-wide association (GWA) studies. Meta-analyses combining the largest GWA meta-analysis data sets for these cancers totaling 112,349 cases and 116,421 controls of European ancestry, all together and in pairs, identified at P < 10(-8) seven new cross-cancer loci: three associated with susceptibility to all three cancers (rs17041869/2q13/BCL2L11; rs7937840/11q12/INCENP; rs1469713/19p13/GATAD2A), two breast and ovarian cancer risk loci (rs200182588/9q31/SMC2; rs8037137/15q26/RCCD1), and two breast and prostate cancer risk loci (rs5013329/1p34/NSUN4; rs9375701/6q23/L3MBTL3). Index variants in five additional regions previously associated with only one cancer also showed clear association with a second cancer type. Cell-type-specific expression quantitative trait locus and enhancer-gene interaction annotations suggested target genes with potential cross-cancer roles at the new loci. Pathway analysis revealed significant enrichment of death receptor signaling genes near loci with P < 10(-5) in the three-cancer meta-analysis. SIGNIFICANCE: We demonstrate that combining large-scale GWA meta-analysis findings across cancer types can identify completely new risk loci common to breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers. We show that the identification of such cross-cancer risk loci has the potential to shed new light on the shared biology underlying these hormone-related cancers.
