Ambient vibration survey of the Bosporus Suspension Bridge

This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-Archiving.Traffic and wind excitation has been used to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the first Bosporus (Bogazici) Suspension Bridge. Structural symmetry and the absence of suspended side-spans allowed attention to be focused on the main span and the Asian tower. For the main span, 18 vertical and 20 lateral modes were obtained, including torsional modes. For the tower, 12 longitudinal and 12 lateral modes were identified. All these models lie in the range 0–1-1 Hz.
A detailed comparison is given between these modes and corresponding calculated modes, obtained by use of a three-dimensional finite element model which includes a geometric stiffness matrix. Of particular interest is the validity of the theoretical model used for the box-deck, because of its subsequent use in response studies of asynchronous seismic excitation.
Comparison with a more limited study made in 1973 shows that the bridge continues to behave as it was designed to behave, particularly with regard to the deck-tower interface. From natural frequency measurements of two hangers, the load which they carry was assessed
Latent acetylcholinesterase in secretory vesicles isolated from adrenal medulla
A new procedure is described for the preparation of highly purified and stable secretory vesicles from adrenal medulla. Two forms of acetylcholinesterase, a membrane bound form as well as a soluble form, were found within these vesicles. The secretory vesicles, isolated by differential centrifugation, were further purified on a continuous isotonic Percoll™ gradient. In this way, secretory vesicles were separated from mitochondrial, microsomal and cell membrane contamination. The secretory vesicles recovered from the gradient contained an average of 2.26 μmol adrenalin/mg protein. On incubation for 30 min at 37°C in media differing in ionic strength, pH, Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentration, the vesicles released less than 20% of total adrenalin. Acetylcholinesterase could hardly be detected in the secretory vesicle fraction when assayed in isotonic media. However, in hypotonic media (<400 mosmol/kg) or in Triton X-100 (0.2% final concentration) acetylcholinesterase activity was markedly higher. During hypotonic treatment or when secretory vesicles were specifically lyzed with 2 mM Mg2+ and 2 mM ATP, adrenalin as well as part of acetylcholinesterase was released from the vesicular content. On polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis this soluble enzyme exhibited the same electrophoretic mobility as the enzyme released into the perfusate from adrenal glands upon stimulation. In addition to the soluble enzyme a membrane bound form of acetylcholinesterase exists within secretory vesicles, which sediments with the secretory vesicle membranes and exhibits a different electrophoretic mobility compared to the soluble enzyme. It is concluded, that the soluble enzyme found within isolated secretory vesicles is secreted via exocytosis, whilst the membrane-bound form is transported to the cell membrane during this process, contributing to the biogenesis of the cell membrane
Causality in real-time dynamic substructure testing
Causality, in the bond graph sense, is shown to provide a conceptual framework for the design of real-time dynamic substructure testing experiments. In particular, known stability problems with split-inertia substructured systems are reinterpreted as causality issues within the new conceptual framework.
As an example, causality analysis is used to provide a practical solution to a split-inertia substructuring problem and the solution is experimentally verified

Bond graph based control and substructuring
A bond graph framework giving a unified treatment of both physical-model based control and hybrid experimental–numerical simulation (also known as real-time dynamic substructuring) is presented. The framework consists of two subsystems, one physical and one numerical, connected by a transfer system representing non-ideal actuators and sensors. Within this context, a two-stage design procedure is proposed: firstly, design and/or analysis of the numerical and physical subsystem interconnection as if the transfer system were not present; and secondly removal of as much as possible of the transfer system dynamics while having regard for the stability margins established in the first stage. The approach allows the use of engineering insight backed up by well-established control theory; a number of possibilities for each stage are given.
The approach is illustrated using two laboratory systems: an experimental mass-spring-damper substructured system and swing up and hold control of an inverted pendulum. Experimental results are provided in the latter case
The kinematics and kinetics of pedestrians on a laterally swaying footbridge
Progress in understanding human-structure interaction (HSI) on footbridges has been hampered by the shortage of quality data collected in realistic environments. This paper reports a novel experiment conducted on a naturally-swaying 7 m footbridge of frequency 0.67 Hz and amplitudes up to 125 mm. Subjects crossed the bridge while wearing infrared motion-tracking markers and pressure-sensing insoles. The bridge was fitted with bespoke force plates, allowing investigators to simultaneously record kinematic and kinetic reactions to the structure’s motion, which was assumed simple harmonic. The bridge was naturally excited by the test subjects, who were allowed to walk at a comfortable self-chosen pace. The data show that the subjects adopted a fixed-in-space Centre of Mass (CoM) strategy but their Centres of Pressure (CoP) were highly correlated to the position of the bridge deck within its lateral oscillation cycle (henceforth ‘bridge phase’), allowing for the prediction of wide and crossed steps. Ground forces generally correlated to CoMCoP separation, which reflected the phase of the bridge at the previous heel-strike. Instantaneous step width was correlated to the bridge phase and is proportional to the offset in the Medial-Lateral (M-L) ground force between consecutive steps. The Inverted Pendulum Model (IPM) was evaluated using the data, exhibiting a limited fit to the recorded ground forces. Finally, the pedestrian-induced work on the bridge and system stability boundaries are also calculated, revealing mechanisms for bridge instability to occur

Aluminium content of spanish infant formula
Aluminium toxicity has been relatively well documented in infants with impaired renal
function and premature neonates.
The aims of this study were to analyse the concentration of aluminium in the majority of
infant formulae sold commercially in Spain, to determine the influence of aluminium
content in the tap water in reconstituted powder formulae and to estimate the theoretical
toxic aluminium intake in comparison with the PTWI, and lastly, to discuss the possible
interactions of certain essential trace elements added to formulation with aluminium
according to type or main protein based infant formula.
A total of 82 different infant formulae from 9 different manufacturers were studied.
Sample digestion was simulated in a closed acid-decomposition microwave system.
Aluminium concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry with
graphite furnace.
In general, the infant formulae studied provide an aluminium level higher than that found
in human milk, especially in the case of soya, preterm or hydrolysed casein-based
formulae.
Standard formulae provide lower aluminium intakes amounting to about 4 % PTWI.
Specialised and preterm formulae result in moderate intake (11 – 12 % and 8 – 10 %
PTWI, respectively). Soya formulae contribute the highest intake (15 % PTWI).
Aluminium exposure from drinking water used for powder formula reconstitution is not
considered a clear potential risk.
In accordance with the present state of knowledge about aluminium toxicity, it seems
prudent to call for continued efforts to standardise routine quality control and reduce
aluminium levels in infant formula as well as to keep the aluminium concentration under
300 g l-1 for all infant formulae, most specifically those formulae for premature and low
birth neonates
Geographically distributed hybrid testing & collaboration between geotechnical centrifuge and structures laboratories
Distributed Hybrid Testing (DHT) is an experimental technique designed to capitalise on advances in modern networking infrastructure to overcome traditional laboratory capacity limitations. By coupling the heterogeneous test apparatus and computational resources of geographically distributed laboratories, DHT provides the means to take on complex, multi-disciplinary challenges with new forms of communication and collaboration. To introduce the opportunity and practicability afforded by DHT, here an exemplar multi-site test is addressed in which a dedicated fibre network and suite of custom software is used to connect the geotechnical centrifuge at the University of Cambridge with a variety of structural dynamics loading apparatus at the University of Oxford and the University of Bristol. While centrifuge time-scaling prevents real-time rates of loading in this test, such experiments may be used to gain valuable insights into physical phenomena, test procedure and accuracy. These and other related experiments have led to the development of the real-time DHT technique and the creation of a flexible framework that aims to facilitate future distributed tests within the UK and beyond. As a further example, a real-time DHT experiment between structural labs using this framework for testing across the Internet is also presented
