    Ants and Spices: Multiple Bioassays Investigating Turmeric (\u3ci\u3eCurcuma longa\u3c/i\u3e) and Chili Powder as Repellents for Ants (Formicidae)

    Spices offer an environmentally friendly method of controlling ants (Formicidae) in homes. In this study, I used three bioassays to examine the effect of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and one bioassay to examine the effect of Chili Powder as repellents for ants. Tests were conducted near active ants outdoors. All bioassays examined paired control and treatment baits along a transect, and control baits consisted of a small sheet of corrugated cardboard (a sterile yet easy to manipulate substrate) with granulated sugar on top. In the first bioassay, treatment baits were similar to controls but with Turmeric covering the sugar. In the second and third bioassays, treatment baits had a ring of Turmeric surrounding the sugar on the substrate. In all Turmeric-focused bioassays, a Sign Test demonstrated that Turmeric holds significant possibility as a repellent for ants but needs further study. Finally, the fourth bioassay was conducted as the first, but with Chili Powder in place of the Turmeric and showed no statistical differences between the control and treatment groups

    "Infiltrators" or refugees? An analysis of Israel's policy towards African asylum seekers

    This article adopts a genealogical approach in examining Israeli immigration policy by focusing on the situation confronting African asylum seekers who have been forced back into Egypt, detained and deported but who have not had their asylum claims properly assessed. Based on immigration policies formulated at the time of Israeli independence, whose principle objective was to secure a Jewish majority state, we argue that Israel’s treatment of African asylum seekers as ‘infiltrators’/economic migrants stems from an insistence on maintaining immigration as a sovereign issue formally isolated from other policy domains. Such an approach is not only in violation of Israel’s commitment to the Refugee Convention, it directly contributes to policies which are ineffective and unduly harsh

Br J Sports Med 2017;51:208-209, doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bjsports-2016-096107.Rotator cuff tendinopathies are the most commonly diagnosed musculoskeletal shoulder conditions and are associated with pain, weakness and loss of function.1 Tendon swelling may be associated with tendinopathy and may result from acute overload.2–3 An increase in tendon cells (tenocytes) and upregulation of large molecular weight proteoglycans, such as aggrecan, may increase tendon water content.2 There is uncertainty as to whether the swelling is related to the pain or is instead an observed but unrelated phenomenon. Weakness detected clinically may be due to pain inhibition.4–5 Early treatment of acute rotator cuff tendinopathy involves patient education and relative rest, and may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation. Subacromial corticosteroid injections are also used to achieve the same purpose. These techniques show low to moderate evidence of reducing short-term pain but they do not improve function.6 The medications have side effects such as gastrointestinal tract complaints,7 and corticosteroids may damage tendon tissue.8 Identifying alternative ways to control pain and inflammation may be warranted. Two clinical procedures to manage RC tendinopathy include ice wraps and isometric exercise, however, there are no empirical data supporting their use. This pilot study, conducted at the Illawarra Sports Medicine Clinic, NSW, Australia, was designed to test (1) the short term analgaesic effect of these interventions and (2) the feasibility of a larger clinical trial for adults diagnosed with acute rotator cuff tendinopathy (<12 weeks).Peer reviewe

    A LASSO-based approach to sample sites for phylogenetic tree search

    Motivation In recent years, full-genome sequences have become increasingly available and as a result many modern phylogenetic analyses are based on very long sequences, often with over 100 000 sites. Phylogenetic reconstructions of large-scale alignments are challenging for likelihood-based phylogenetic inference programs and usually require using a powerful computer cluster. Current tools for alignment trimming prior to phylogenetic analysis do not promise a significant reduction in the alignment size and are claimed to have a negative effect on the accuracy of the obtained tree. Results Here, we propose an artificial-intelligence-based approach, which provides means to select the optimal subset of sites and a formula by which one can compute the log-likelihood of the entire data based on this subset. Our approach is based on training a regularized Lasso-regression model that optimizes the log-likelihood prediction accuracy while putting a constraint on the number of sites used for the approximation. We show that computing the likelihood based on 5% of the sites already provides accurate approximation of the tree likelihood based on the entire data. Furthermore, we show that using this Lasso-based approximation during a tree search decreased running-time substantially while retaining the same tree-search performance

    Microcredit and willingness to pay for environmental quality: Evidence from a randomized-controlled trial of finance for sanitation in rural Cambodia

    Low willingness to pay (WTP) for environmental quality in developing countries is a key research question in environmental economics. One explanation is that missing credit markets may suppress WTP for environmental improvements that require large up-front investments. We test the impact of microloans on WTP for hygienic latrines via a randomized controlled trial in 30 villages in rural Cambodia. We find that microcredit dramatically raises WTP for improved latrines, with 60% of households in the Financing arm willing to purchase at an unsubsidized price, relative to 25% in the Non-financing arm. Effects on latrine installation are positive but muted by several factors, including a negative peer effect: randomly induced purchases by neighbors reduce a household\u27s probability of installing its own latrine. On methodological grounds, this paper shows that a decision-focused evaluation can be integrated into academic analysis to provide insight into questions of general interest. (C) 2017 The Authors.     Synchrotron-based X-ray Fluorescence Ghost Imaging

    X-ray Fluorescence Ghost Imaging (XRF-GI) was recently demonstrated for x-ray lab sources. It has the potential to reduce acquisition time and deposited dose by choosing their trade-off with spatial resolution, while alleviating the focusing constraints of the probing beam. Here, we demonstrate the realization of synchrotron-based XRF-GI: We present both an adapted experimental setup and its corresponding required computational technique to process the data. This not only extends the above-mentioned advantages to synchrotron XRF imaging, it also presents new possibilities for developing strategies to improve precision in nano-scale imaging measurements

    Dysexecutive symptoms and carer strain following acquired brain injury: changes measured before and after holistic neuropsychological rehabilitation

    BACKGROUND: Following acquired brain injury (ABI), deficits in executive functioning (EF) are common. As a result many brain-injured patients encounter problems in every-day functioning, and their families experience significant strain. Previous research has documented the benefits of cognitive rehabilitation for executive dysfunction, and rehabilitation programmes designed to ameliorate functional problems associated with ABI. OBJECTIVES: This study primarily aims to evaluate whether a neuropsychological rehabilitation programme reduces reported symptoms of everyday dysexecutive behaviour and carer strain. METHODS: In this study 66 ABI outpatients attended comprehensive holistic neuropsychological rehabilitation programme. A repeated-measures design was employed to determine the effect of rehabilitation on EF and carer strain, as part of a service evaluation. Outcome measures comprised the dysexecutive questionnaire (DEX/DEX-I) and carer strain index (CSI), applied pre- and post-rehabilitation. RESULTS: Results indicate rehabilitation benefited clients and carers in 5 of 6 DEX/DEX-I subscales, and 2 of 3 CSI subscales, (p<.05). An effect of aetiology on rehabilitation was found on the metacognitive scale of the DEX-I. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, this study supports a comprehensive holistic neuropsychological rehabilitation programme as effective in reducing reported symptoms of dysexecutive behaviour and carer strain following ABI

    Cognitive rehabilitation treatment for mental slowness in conversion disorder : A case report

    Cognitive rehabilitation treatment (CRT) has been described in patients with brain injury, but it has not been attempted in cases of cognitive dysfunction without organic cause. This case report describes CRT of neurocognitive impairment in a 54-year-old female patient with conversion disorder (CD). She experienced difficulties with regard to speaking, motor function, and pain symptoms, which developed after stressful life circumstances. Baseline neuropsychological assessment (NPA) showed mental slowness and impaired (working) memory. Time Pressure Management (TPM) was used as CRT to teach the patient a compensatory strategy to overcome mental slowness in 12 sessions. During treatment, physical symptoms were monitored with the Physical Symptom Questionnaire (LKV), and mental slowness with the Mental Slowness Questionnaire (MSQ). After treatment, the LKV score dropped from 85 to 47, indicating 54% treatment response. Mental slowness showed improvement based on the MSQ and was confirmed by an NPA after treatment. Other neurocognitive functions improved as well and the motoric CD symptoms subsided. This case report suggests that improvement of mental slowness, as well as motor CD symptoms, can be achieved by TPM in non-organic neurocognitive impairment in CD. This finding has not been described in the literature.
