Ti Alloyed α -Ga 2 O 3: Route towards Wide Band Gap Engineering
The suitability of Ti as a band gap modifier for α-Ga2O3 was investigated, taking advantage of the isostructural α phases and high band gap difference between Ti2O3 and Ga2O3. Films of (Ti,Ga)2O3 were synthesized by atomic layer deposition on sapphire substrates, and characterized to determine how crystallinity and band gap vary with composition for this alloy. We report the deposition of high quality α-(TixGa1âx)2O3 films with x = 3.7%. For greater compositions the crystalline quality of the films degrades rapidly, where the corundum phase is maintained in films up to x = 5.3%, and films containing greater Ti fractions being amorphous. Over the range of achieved corundum phase films, that is 0% †x †5.3%, the band gap energy varies by âŒ270 meV. The ability to maintain a crystalline phase at low fractions of Ti, accompanied by a modification in band gap, shows promising prospects for band gap engineering and the development of wavelength specific solar-blind photodetectors based on α-Ga2O3
Novel temperatures are already widespread beneath the worldâs tropical forest canopies
Tropical forest biodiversity is potentially at high risk from climate change, but most species reside within or below the canopy, where they are buffered from extreme temperatures. Here, by modelling the hourly below-canopy climate conditions of 300,000 tropical forest locations globally between 1990 and 2019, we show that recent small increases in below-canopy temperature (<1 °C) have led to highly novel temperature regimes across most of the tropics. This is the case even within contiguous forest, suggesting that tropical forests are sensitive to climate change. However, across the globe, some forest areas have experienced relatively non-novel temperature regimes and thus serve as important climate refugia that require urgent protection and restoration. This pantropical analysis of changes in below-canopy climatic conditions challenges the prevailing notion that tropical forest canopies reduce the severity of climate change impacts
Global maps of soil temperature
Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-kmÂČ resolution for 0â5 and 5â15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e., offset) between in-situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-kmÂČ pixels (summarized from 8500 unique temperature sensors) across all the worldâs major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in-situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications

Characterisation of radiation effects in ultra-thin GaAs solar cells for space applications
Ultra-thin solar cells show promise for application in space power systems for particularly harsh radiation environments, due to their high intrinsic radiation tolerance. The work presented in this thesis focuses on such a cell design, incorporating an 80 nm thick GaAs absorber layer, and furthers the understanding of the electrical behaviour of ultra-thin solar cells, as well as the effects of radiation on these devices and the materials comprising them. This was achieved through irradiation of the devices with a variety of radiation types and their characterisation by cathodoluminescence, both continuous wave and time-resolved, and current-voltage measurements. It is demonstrated that the preservation of short-circuit current up to high dose in ultra-thin solar cells can be attributed to the carrier lifetime remaining greater than the time taken for carriers to traverse the absorber layer, even after the lifetime is degraded severely by radiation damage. The eventual collapse in short-circuit current beyond 2 Ă 10ÂčÂł MeV gâ»Âč is found to likely stem from the rapid increase in traverse time, due to carrier removal in the passivation layers. This study identifies the significant contribution of trap-assisted tunneling to the carrier recombination rate in these devices. This effect accounts for the difference in radiation-induced open-circuit voltage degradation rate between devices with absorber layer doping concentrations of 1 Ă 10Âčâ· and 1 Ă 10Âčâž cmâ»Âł. Trap-assisted tunneling also partially explains the high ideality factors (> 2) of ultra-thin solar cells. The observed variation in ideality factor with radiation type is correlated with corresponding trends in open-circuit voltage degradation rate, carrier lifetime damage constants and appearance of radiation-induced defects in cathodoluminescence intensity maps. These trends are indicative of the variation in defect type with radiation type and suggest that the presence and size of defect clusters has a significant effect on the electrical behaviour of ultra-thin solar cells
