    Age work in organizations: maintaining and disrupting institutionalized understandings of higher age

    Age diversity research calls for new approaches in explaining the persistence of age inequalities, which integrate different levels of analysis and display greater context sensitivity. Concurrently, neoinstitutionalist research interested in social inequalities calls for merging institutional theory with critical perspectives and to account for issues of power. In this study, we address the calls of both research streams through developing the concept of ‘age work’: the institutional work actors undertake on age as a social institution. Applying our novel concept to a multi-actor study of four German organizations known for their age management, we come across a counterintuitive insight regarding actors’ age work: maintaining stereotypical age images can serve to counter age inequalities, whereas deconstructing age images can reinforce age inequalities. The multi-actor perspective of our study allows us to categorize different forms of power-laden and interest-driven age work and to portray the reproduction of age inequalities as a result of actors’ age work, embedded in different contexts and complex power relations. Comparing employees’ forms of age work across sectors and organizations, we detail how notions of masculinity as well as income and job security shaped the categorized forms of age work

    This study integrates the discussions shown in the Master's thesis in Education, in which it was analyzed the disabled students inclusion in the Higher Education, emphasizing the access, staying and learning  issues, seeking to understand the inclusion process of these students in Higher Education Institutions in Umuarama City, in Parana Northwest region. For study, enrolled students, concluding and dropout were interviewed, from 2008 to 2014. Analytical, descriptive, qualitative/quantitative research presuppositions were used to be considered appropriated in understanding the participants' life in their university routine, trying to identify, by analysis of data from interviews, the guidelines of this study. The bibliographic basis is of the authors who talk about disabled people education and the educational inclusion in Higher Education. The study shows as study meaning units the difficulties and challenges faced by disable people in Higher Education specially referring to the teaching and learning process, prejudiced situations and accessibility aspects, as well as, the importance of the family participation in academic life, like fundamental elements to the stay or dropout of these students in the Higher Education Institutions (HEI).Este estudo integra as discussões apresentadas na dissertação de Mestrado em Educação, as quais analisaram a inclusão dos estudantes com deficiência na Educação Superior, com ênfase na análise de questões de acesso, permanência e aprendizagem, buscando compreender o processo de inclusão dos mesmos em instituições de Educação Superior do município de Umuarama, na região Noroeste do Paraná. Para o estudo, foram entrevistados estudantes matriculados, concluintes e desistentes, no período de 2008 a 2014. Utilizaram-se os pressupostos da pesquisa qualitativa/quantitativa, descritiva, analítica por ser considerada adequada na compreensão da vida dos participantes em seu cotidiano universitário, buscando-se identificar, por meio da análise dos dados obtidos nas entrevistas, os eixos norteadores deste estudo. A base bibliográfica é de autores que discutem a educação das pessoas com deficiência e a inclusão educacional na Educação Superior. O estudo revela como unidades de significados 1- dificuldades e desafios encontrados pelas pessoas com deficiência na Educação Superior especialmente no que se refere ao processo de ensino e aprendizagem; 2- as situações de preconceito e 3- aspectos da acessibilidade e a importância da participação da família na vida acadêmica, como elementos fundamentais para permanência ou abandono desses estudantes nas IES. A análise dos dados revela que a permanência desses estudantes na Educação Superior ocorre em meio a dificuldades, como falta de materiais adequados e preconceito. Ações de responsabilidade das IES ficaram a cargo das famílias, que assumem papel relevante para que eles superem dificuldades impostas pela própria deficiência. A compreensão e estímulo de professores e de amigos são condições que auxiliam na permanência e conclusão do curso

    Quasi-free π0\pi^0 Photoproduction from the Bound Nucleon

    Differential cross-sections for quasi-free π0\pi^0 photoproduction from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured for Eγ=200−400E_\gamma= 200 - 400 MeV at θγlab=136.2∘\theta^{\rm lab}_\gamma = 136.2^\circ usind the Glasgow photon tagger at MAMI, the Mainz 48 cm ∅\varnothing ×\times 64 cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the G\"ottingen SENECA recoil detector. For the proton measurements made with both liquid deuterium and liquid hydrogen targets allow direct comparison of "free" π0\pi^0 photoproduction cross-sections as extracted from the bound proton data with experimental free cross sections which are found to be in reasonable agreement below 320 MeV. At higher energies the "free" cross sections extracted from quasifree data are significantly smaller than the experimental free cross sections and theoretical predictions based on multipole analysis. For the first time, "free" neutron cross sections have been extracted in the Δ\Delta-region. They are also in agreement with the predictions from multipole analysis up to 320 MeV and significantly smaller at higher photon energies

    Quasi-free Compton Scattering and the Polarizabilities of the Neutron

    Differential cross sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured using the Glasgow/Mainz tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator together with the Mainz 48 cm ⊘\oslash ×\times 64 cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the G\"ottingen SENECA recoil detector. The data cover photon energies ranging from 200 MeV to 400 MeV at θγLAB=136.2∘\theta^{LAB}_\gamma=136.2^\circ. Liquid deuterium and hydrogen targets allowed direct comparison of free and quasi-free scattering from the proton. The neutron detection efficiency of the SENECA detector was measured via the reaction p(γ,π+n)p(\gamma,\pi^+ n). The "free" proton Compton scattering cross sections extracted from the bound proton data are in reasonable agreement with those for the free proton which gives confidence in the method to extract the differential cross section for free scattering from quasi-free data. Differential cross sections on the free neutron have been extracted and the difference of the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the neutron have been obtained to be α−β=9.8±3.6(stat)12.1.1(syst)±2.2(model)\alpha-\beta= 9.8\pm 3.6(stat){}^{2.1}_1.1(syst)\pm 2.2(model) in units 10−4fm310^{-4}fm^3. In combination with the polarizability sum α+β=15.2±0.5\alpha +\beta=15.2\pm 0.5 deduced from photoabsorption data, the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities, αn=12.5±1.8(stat)−0.6+1.1±1.1(model)\alpha_n=12.5\pm 1.8(stat){}^{+1.1}_{-0.6}\pm 1.1(model) and βn=2.7∓1.8(stat)−1.1+0.6(syst)∓1.1(model)\beta_n=2.7\mp 1.8(stat){}^{+0.6}_{-1.1}(syst)\mp 1.1(model) are obtained. The backward spin polarizability of the neutron was determined to be γπ(n)=(58.6±4.0)×10−4fm4\gamma^{(n)}_\pi=(58.6\pm 4.0)\times 10^{-4}fm^4

    Measuring Compton scattered photons and recoil neutrons in coincidence, quasi-free Compton scattering by the neutron has been investigated at MAMI (Mainz) at thetaγlab=136otheta^{lab}_\gamma=136^o in an energy range from 200 to 400 MeV. From the data a polarizability difference of αn−βn=9.8±3.6(stat)−1.1+2.1(syst)±2.2(model)\alpha_n - \beta_n = 9.8 \pm 3.6(stat)^{+2.1}_{-1.1}(syst)\pm 2.2(model) in units of 10−4fm310^{-4}fm^3 has been determined. In combination with the polarizability sum αn+βn=15.2±0.5\alpha_n+\beta_n= 15.2\pm 0.5 deduced from photo absorption data, the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities, αn=12.5±1.8(stat)−0.6+1.1(syst)±1.1(model)\alpha_n=12.5\pm 1.8(stat)^{+1.1}_{-0.6}(syst)\pm 1.1(model) and βn=2.7∓1.8(stat)−1.1+0.6(syst)∓1.1(model)\beta_n = 2.7\mp 1.8(stat)^{+0.6}_{-1.1}(syst)\mp 1.1(model), are obtained

    Reporting on sustainability and HRM: a comparative study of sustainability reporting practices by the world’s largest companies

    As a response to the growing public awareness on the importance of organisational contributions to sustainable development, there is an increased incentive for corporations to report on their sustainability activities. In parallel with this has been the development of ‘Sustainable HRM’ which embraces a growing body of practitioner and academic literature connecting the notions of corporate sustainability to HRM. The aim of this article is to analyse corporate sustainability reporting amongst the world’s largest companies and to assess the HRM aspects of sustainability within these reports in comparison to environmental aspects of sustainable management and whether organisational attributes – principally country-of-origin – influences the reporting of such practices. A focus in this article is the extent to which the reporting of various aspects of sustainability may reflect dominant models of corporate governance in the country in which a company is headquartered. The findings suggest, first and against expectations, that the overall disclosure on HRM-related performance is not lower than that on environmental performance. Second, companies report more on their internal workforce compared to their external workforce. Finally, international differences, in particular those between companies headquartered in liberal market economies and coordinated market economies, are not as apparent as expected

    Dispersion relations in real and virtual Compton scattering

    A unified presentation is given on the use of dispersion relations in the real and virtual Compton scattering processes off the nucleon. The way in which dispersion relations for Compton scattering amplitudes establish connections between low energy nucleon structure quantities, such as polarizabilities or anomalous magnetic moments, and the nucleon excitation spectrum is reviewed. We discuss various sum rules for forward real and virtual Compton scattering, such as the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and its generalizations, the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule, as well as sum rules for forward nucleon polarizabilities, and review their experimental status. Subsequently, we address the general case of real Compton scattering (RCS). Various types of dispersion relations for RCS are presented as tools for extracting nucleon polarizabilities from the RCS data. The information on nucleon polarizabilities gained in this way is reviewed and the nucleon structure information encoded in these quantities is discussed. The dispersion relation formalism is then extended to virtual Compton scattering (VCS). The information on generalized nucleon polarizabilities extracted from recent VCS experiments is described, along with its interpretation in nucleon structure models. As a summary, the physics content of the existing data is discussed and some perspectives for future theoretical and experimental activities in this field are presented.Comment: 120 pages, 42 figures, to appear in Phys.     Risk Factors, Subsequent Disease Onset, and Prognostic Impact of Myocardial Infarction and Atrial Fibrillation

    BACKGROUND: Although myocardial infarction (MI) and atrial fibrillation (AF) are frequent comorbidities and share common cardiovascular risk factors, the direction and strength of the association of the risk factors with disease onset, subsequent disease incidence, and mortality are not completely understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: In pooled multivariable Cox regression analyses, we examined temporal relations of disease onset and identified predictors of MI, AF, and all-cause mortality in 108 363 individuals (median age, 46.0 years; 48.2% men) free of MI and AF at baseline from 6 European population-based cohorts. During a maximum follow-up of 10.0 years, 3558 (3.3%) individuals were diagnosed exclusively with MI, 1922 (1.8%) with AF but no MI, and 491 (0.5%) individuals developed both MI and AF. Association of sex, systolic blood pressure, antihypertensive treatment, and diabetes appeared to be stronger with incident MI than with AF, whereas increasing age and body mass index showed a higher risk for incident AF. Total cholesterol and daily smoking were significantly related to incident MI but not AF. Combined population attributable fraction of cardiovascular risk factors was >70% for incident MI, whereas it was only 27% for AF. Subsequent MI after AF (hazard ratio [HR], 1.68; 95% CI, 1.03–2.74) and subsequent AF after MI (HR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.31–2.34) both significantly increased overall mortality risk. CONCLUSIONS: We observed different associations of cardiovascular risk factors with both diseases indicating distinct pathophysiological pathways.
