    Learning to Notice Mathematics Instruction: Using Video to Develop Preservice Teachers\u27 Vision of Ambitious Pedagogy

    Video is used extensively in teacher preparation, raising questions about what and how preservice teachers learn through video observation and analysis. We investigate the development of candidates\u27 noticing of ambitious mathematics pedagogy in the context of a video-based course designed to cultivate ways of seeing and interpreting classroom interactions. Qualitative analysis of candidates\u27 observations of teaching at the beginning and end of the course generated a framework of practices and associated approaches for noticing instructional interactions. The 3 practices include attending to features of instruction, elaborating on observations, and integrating observations to reason about instruction. Findings reveal that variations in candidates\u27 noticing was tied to their attention to the details of the features of ambitious pedagogy and to the extent to which they integrated observations to examine the relation between student thinking, teaching practice, and mathematical content

    El COMET-LA (COmmunity-based Management of EnvironmenTal challenges in Latin America) es un proyecto de investigación y cooperación enfocado a buscar soluciones locales para prevenir y resolver tensiones derivadas del uso y aprovechamiento de los recursos naturales. El objetivo principal es identificar modelos comunitarios de gobernanza y gestión sostenible de los recursos naturales útiles para diferentes Sistemas Socio-Ecológicos (SES), en el actual contexto de cambio climático y de creciente competitividad en el uso de estos recursos. La gobernanza en el manejo sostenible de los recursos naturales, es un concepto basado en los derechos humanos y la equidad. En ocasiones, los beneficios de la naturaleza no se distribuyen de manera equitativa, y los recursos naturales están gestionados de manera poco eficiente. Para corregir estas situaciones, los modelos de gobernanza incluyen normas, instituciones y procesos que determinan el ejercicio del poder y las responsabilidades, la toma de decisiones y la participación ciudadana en el manejo de los recursos naturales.     O Plano Nacional de Educação se constitui em um marco fundamental para as políticas educacionais. O documento possui 20 metas que buscam trazer melhorias para a educaçao brasileira e consolidar um sistema educacional capaz de concretizar o direito à educação, entre outras questões. Este Plano inspirou a elaboração dos documentos municipais em todo o Brasil, que em geral, seguiram as indicações no documento nacional. Neste contexto, este estudo identifica e analisa os processos de privatização, em relação à Educação Infantil, presentes nos Planos Municipais de Educação da região do grande ABC, que foram desenvolvidos nos anos de 2015 e 2016. Foram utilizadas as indicações da pesquisa documental para atingir os objetivos, com a análise de conteúdo. Os restultados revelaram superficialidade na maioria das estratégias inseridas nos documentos e similaridades com o Plano Nacional. Foram identificadas, em todos os Planos, estratégias que favorecem à privatização da Educação Infantil, a partir da regulação da oferta pela iniciativa privada e pela possibilidade da avaliação ser realizada nos moldes do Ensino Fundamental e Médio, por meio da apreciação do desempenho do aluno.     Another Chapter in the History of the European Invasion by the Western Conifer Seed Bug, Leptoglossus occidentalis: The Iberian Peninsula

    The Western conifer seed bug, Leptoglossus occidentalis, is native to North America and has already been considered a significant pest in several European countries since its first observation in Italy in 1999. In Spain and Portugal, it was recorded for the first time in 2003 and 2010, respectively, and its impact on Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) is of major concern. Before developing control measures for this insect pest, it is paramount to clarify its spatiotemporal dynamics of invasion. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to (a) characterise the genetic structure and diversity and (b) invasion pathways of L. occidentalis populations in the Iberian Peninsula. To do so, specimens of L. occidentalis were collected at fourteen sites widely distributed within the Iberian Peninsula. We used mtDNA sequences of Cytochrome b and eleven microsatellite markers to characterise the genetic diversity and the population structure in the Iberian Peninsula. Our genetic results combined with the observational dates strongly support a stratified expansion of L. occidentalis invasion in the Iberian Peninsula proceeding from multiple introductions, including at least one in Barcelona, one in Valencia, and one in the west coast or in the Southeastern region.Ana Farinha received support from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia I.P.     Maternal and neonatal factors related to prematurity

    ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To identify maternal and neonatal factors associated with prematurity in the municipality of Porto Alegre. METHOD This was a population-based case-control study. The cases were newborns under 37 weeks of gestation and the controls were newborns over 37 weeks. The data came from the records of 19,457 births in the city of Porto Alegre in the year 2012 from the Information System on Live Births of the Municipal Health Department. The analysis was carried outand adjusted by a Logistic Regression according to a hierarchical model. The variables studied were allocated into three hierarchy levels: sociodemographic variables; reproductive history; and gestational and birth factors. RESULTS There were 767 cases allocated and 1,534 controls in a design of a case for two controls (1:2) by simple randomization. In the final model, a statistically significant association was found for prematurity for the following variables: mother's age under 19 years old (OR=1.32; CI 95%: 1.02-1.71) or over 34 years old (OR=1.39; CI 95%: 1.12-1.72); inadequate maternal schooling for age (OR=2.11; CI 95%: 1.22-3.65); multiple pregnancies (OR=1.14; CI 95%: 1.01-1.29); C-section (OR=1.15; CI 95%: 1.03-1.29); birth weights under 2,500g (OR=4.04; CI 95%: 3.64-4.49); Apgar score at five minutes between zero and three (OR=1.47; CI 95%: 1.12-1.91); and inadequate prenatal care (OR=1.18; CI 95%: 1.02-1.36). CONCLUSION The present study showed the most immediate consequence of prematurity for newborns by evidencing its association with worse Apgar scores and low birth weight. The following factors were also shown as possible more distal determinants of prematurity: mother's age; inadequate maternal education; multiple gestation; inadequate prenatal care; and C-section

    Using NMAGIC to probe the dark matter halo and orbital structure of the X-ray bright, massive elliptical galaxy, NGC 4649

    We create dynamical models of the massive elliptical galaxy, NGC 4649, using the N-body made-to-measure code, NMAGIC, and kinematic constraints from long-slit and planetary nebula (PN) data. We explore a range of potentials based on previous determinations from X-ray observations and a dynamical model fitting globular cluster (GC) velocities and a stellar density profile. The X-ray mass distributions are similar in the central region but have varying outer slopes, while the GC mass profile is higher in the central region and on the upper end of the range further out. Our models cannot differentiate between the potentials in the central region, and therefore if non-thermal pressures or multi-phase components are present in the hot gas, they must be smaller than previously inferred. In the halo, we find that the PN velocities are sensitive tracers of the mass, preferring a less massive halo than that derived from the GC mass profile, but similar to one of the mass distributions derived from X-rays. Our results show that the GCs may form a dynamically distinct system, and that the properties of the hot gas derived from X-rays in the outer halo have considerable uncertainties that need to be better understood. Estimating the mass in stars using photometric information and a stellar population mass-to-light ratio, we infer a dark matter mass fraction in NGC 4649 of ~0.39 at 1Re (10.5 kpc) and ~0.78 at 4Re. We find that the stellar orbits are isotropic to mildly radial in the central ~6 kpc depending on the potential assumed. Further out, the orbital structure becomes slightly more radial along R and more isotropic along z, regardless of the potential assumed. In the equatorial plane, azimuthal velocity dispersions dominate over meridional velocity dispersions, implying that meridional velocity anisotropy is the mechanism for flattening the stellar system.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, accepted in MNRA

    Optic Nerve Topography in Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis

    To assess the added value of the optic nerve region (by using visual evoked potentials [VEPs]) to the current diagnostic criteria. From the Barcelona clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) cohort, patients with complete information to assess dissemination in space (DIS), the optic nerve region, and dissemination in time at baseline (n = 388) were selected. Modified DIS (modDIS) criteria were constructed by adding the optic nerve to the current DIS regions. The DIS and modDIS criteria were evaluated with univariable Cox proportional hazard regression analyses with the time to the second attack as the outcome. A subset of these patients who had at least 10 years of follow-up or a second attack occurring within 10 years (n = 151) were selected to assess the diagnostic performance. The analyses were also performed according to CIS topography (optic neuritis vs non-optic neuritis). The addition of the optic nerve as a fifth region improved the diagnostic performance by slightly increasing the accuracy (2017 DIS 75.5%, modDIS 78.1%) and the sensitivity (2017 DIS 79.2%, modDIS 82.3%) without lowering the specificity (2017 DIS 52.4%, modDIS 52.4%). When the analysis was conducted according to CIS topography, the modDIS criteria performed similarly in both optic neuritis and non-optic neuritis CIS. The addition of the optic nerve, assessed by VEP, as a fifth region in the current DIS criteria slightly improves the diagnostic performance because it increases sensitivity without losing specificity

    Association of Early Progression Independent of Relapse Activity With Long-term Disability After a First Demyelinating Event in Multiple Sclerosis

    This cohort study investigates the long-term outcomes of patients who develop progression independent of relapse activity after a first demyelinating event in multiple sclerosis. What are the long-term outcomes of patients developing progression independent of relapse activity (PIRA) after a first demyelinating event in multiple sclerosis? In this longitudinal cohort study including 1128 patients with a first demyelinating event in multiple sclerosis, presenting with PIRA was associated with significantly shorter times to developing severe disability compared with not presenting with PIRA. Patients presenting with PIRA within the first 5 years of multiple sclerosis had a significantly 26-fold greater risk of developing severe disability than patients whose first PIRA appeared late in the disease. Results suggest that presenting with PIRA after a first demyelinating event in multiple sclerosis is an ominous prognosis, especially if it occurs early in the disease course. Progression independent of relapse activity (PIRA) is the main event responsible for irreversible disability accumulation in relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS). To investigate clinical and neuroimaging predictors of PIRA at the time of the first demyelinating attack and factors associated with long-term clinical outcomes of people who present with PIRA. This cohort study, conducted from January 1, 1994, to July 31, 2021, included patients with a first demyelinating attack from multiple sclerosis; patients were recruited from 1 study center in Spain. Patients were excluded if they refused to participate, had alternative diagnoses, did not meet protocol requirements, had inconsistent demographic information, or had less than 3 clinical assessments. Exposures included (1) clinical and neuroimaging features at the first demyelinating attack and (2) presenting PIRA, ie, confirmed disability accumulation (CDA) in a free-relapse period at any time after symptom onset, within (vs after) the first 5 years of the disease (ie, early/late PIRA), and in the presence (vs absence) of new T2 lesions in the previous 2 years (ie, active/nonactive PIRA). Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) yearly increase rates since the first attack and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for predictors of time to PIRA and time to EDSS 6.0. Of the 1128 patients (mean [SD] age, 32.1 [8.3] years; 781 female individuals [69.2%]) included in the study, 277 (25%) developed 1 or more PIRA events at a median (IQR) follow-up time of 7.2 (4.6-12.4) years (for first PIRA). Of all patients with PIRA, 86 of 277 (31%) developed early PIRA, and 73 of 144 (51%) developed active PIRA. Patients with PIRA were slightly older, had more brain lesions, and were more likely to have oligoclonal bands than those without PIRA. Older age at the first attack was the only predictor of PIRA (HR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.23-1.65; P <.001 for each older decade). Patients with PIRA had steeper EDSS yearly increase rates (0.18; 95% CI, 0.16-0.20 vs 0.04; 95% CI, 0.02-0.05; P < .001) and an 8-fold greater risk of reaching EDSS 6.0 (HR, 7.93; 95% CI, 2.25-27.96; P = .001) than those without PIRA. Early PIRA had steeper EDSS yearly increase rates than late PIRA (0.31; 95% CI, 0.26-0.35 vs 0.13; 95% CI, 0.10-0.16; P < .001) and a 26-fold greater risk of reaching EDSS 6.0 from the first attack (HR, 26.21; 95% CI, 2.26-303.95; P = .009). Results of this cohort study suggest that for patients with multiple sclerosis, presenting with PIRA after a first demyelinating event was not uncommon and suggests an unfavorable long-term prognosis, especially if it occurs early in the disease course

    Testing effects of Lorentz invariance violation in the propagation of astroparticles with the Pierre Auger Observatory

    Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) is often described by dispersion relations of the form E i2 = m i2+p i2+δi,n E 2+n with delta different based on particle type i, with energy E, momentum p and rest mass m. Kinematics and energy thresholds of interactions are modified once the LIV terms become comparable to the squared masses of the particles involved. Thus, the strongest constraints on the LIV coefficients δi,n tend to come from the highest energies. At sufficiently high energies, photons produced by cosmic ray interactions as they propagate through the Universe could be subluminal and unattenuated over cosmological distances. Cosmic ray interactions can also be modified and lead to detectable fingerprints in the energy spectrum and mass composition observed on Earth. The data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory are therefore possibly sensitive to both the electromagnetic and hadronic sectors of LIV. In this article, we explore these two sectors by comparing the energy spectrum and the composition of cosmic rays and the upper limits on the photon flux from the Pierre Auger Observatory with simulations including LIV. Constraints on LIV parameters depend strongly on the mass composition of cosmic rays at the highest energies. For the electromagnetic sector, while no constraints can be obtained in the absence of protons beyond 1019 eV, we obtain δγ,0 > -10-21, δγ,1 > -10-40 eV-1 and δγ,2 > -10-58 eV-2 in the case of a subdominant proton component up to 1020 eV. For the hadronic sector, we study the best description of the data as a function of LIV coefficients and we derive constraints in the hadronic sector such as δhad,0 < 10-19, δhad,1 < 10-38 eV-1 and δhad,2 < 10-57 eV-2 at 5σ CL.Fil: The Pierre Auger Collaboration.     Deciphering multiple sclerosis disability with deep learning attention maps on clinical MRI

    The application of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to MRI data has emerged as a promising approach to achieving unprecedented levels of accuracy when predicting the course of neurological conditions, including multiple sclerosis, by means of extracting image features not detectable through conventional methods. Additionally, the study of CNN-derived attention maps, which indicate the most relevant anatomical features for CNN-based decisions, has the potential to uncover key disease mechanisms leading to disability accumulation. From a cohort of patients prospectively followed up after a first demyelinating attack, we selected those with T1-weighted and T2-FLAIR brain MRI sequences available for image analysis and a clinical assessment performed within the following six months (N = 319). Patients were divided into two groups according to expanded disability status scale (EDSS) score: ≥3.0 and < 3.0. A 3D-CNN model predicted the class using whole-brain MRI scans as input. A comparison with a logistic regression (LR) model using volumetric measurements as explanatory variables and a validation of the CNN model on an independent dataset with similar characteristics (N = 440) were also performed. The layer-wise relevance propagation method was used to obtain individual attention maps. The CNN model achieved a mean accuracy of 79% and proved to be superior to the equivalent LR-model (77%). Additionally, the model was successfully validated in the independent external cohort without any re-training (accuracy = 71%). Attention-map analyses revealed the predominant role of frontotemporal cortex and cerebellum for CNN decisions, suggesting that the mechanisms leading to disability accrual exceed the mere presence of brain lesions or atrophy and probably involve how damage is distributed in the central nervous system
