    Piston-ring film thickness: theory and experiment compared

    A review of the published literature has demonstrated a large variability and discrepancies in the measured and predicted values of piston-ring lubricating film thickness in internal combustion engines. Only 2 papers have been found that compare experiments in firing engines directly with outputs from sophisticated ring-pack lubrication models. The agreement between theory and experiment in these comparisons was limited, possibly because of inadequacies in the models and/ or inaccuracies of measurement. This paper seeks to contribute to the literature by comparing accurately calibrated experimental measurements of piston-ring film thickness in a firing engine with predictions from an advanced, commercial software package alongside details of the systematic analysis of the measurement errors in this process. Suggestions on how measurement accuracy could be further improved are also given. Measurements of oil film thickness with an error (standard deviation) of +/-15% have been achieved. It is shown that this error can be reduced further, by changes in the design and installation of the sensors. Detailed experimental measurements of film thickness under the top compression ring in a firing petrol engine have been made and compared with the predictions from a commercial, state-of-the art modelling package. The agreement between theory and experiment is excellent throughout the stroke in most cases, but some significant differences are observed at the lower load conditions.     Four Fermion Field Theories and the Chern-Simons Field: A Renormalization Group Study

    In (2+1) dimensions, we consider the model of a NN flavor, two-component fermionic field interacting through a Chern-Simons field besides a four fermion self-interaction which consists of a linear combination of the Gross-Neveu and Thirring like terms. The four fermion interaction is not perturbatively renormalizable and the model is taken as an effective field theory in the region of low momenta. Using Zimmerman procedure for reducing coupling constants, it is verified that, for small values of the Chern-Simons parameter, the origin is an infrared stable fixed point but changes to ultraviolet stable as α\alpha becomes bigger than a critical αc\alpha_c. Composite operators are also analyzed and it is shown that a specific four fermion interaction has an improved ultraviolet behavior as NN increases.Comment: 9 pages, revte

    The repeatability of cognitive performance: a meta-analysis

    International audienceOne contribution of 15 to a theme issue 'Causes and consequences of individual differences in cognitive abilities'. Behavioural and cognitive processes play important roles in mediating an individual's interactions with its environment. Yet, while there is a vast literature on repeatable individual differences in behaviour, relatively little is known about the repeatability of cognitive performance. To further our understanding of the evolution of cogni-tion, we gathered 44 studies on individual performance of 25 species across six animal classes and used meta-analysis to assess whether cognitive performance is repea-table. We compared repeatability (R) in performance (1) on the same task presented at different times (temporal repeat-ability), and (2) on different tasks that measured the same putative cognitive ability (contextual repeatability). We also addressed whether R estimates were influenced by seven extrinsic factors (moderators): type of cognitive performance measurement, type of cognitive task, delay between tests, origin of the subjects, experimental context, taxonomic class and publication status. We found support for both temporal and contextual repeatability of cognitive performance, with mean R estimates ranging between 0.15 and 0.28. Repeatability estimates were mostly influenced by the type of cognitive performance measures and publication status. Our findings highlight the widespread occurrence of consistent inter-individual variation in cog-nition across a range of taxa which, like behaviour, may be associated with fitness outcomes.     Renormalization group improvement of the NRQCD Lagrangian and heavy quarkonium spectrum

    We complete the leading-log renormalization group scaling of the NRQCD Lagrangian at O(1/m2)O(1/m^2). The next-to-next-to-leading-log renormalization group scaling of the potential NRQCD Lagrangian (as far as the singlet is concerned) is also obtained in the situation mαsΛQCDm\alpha_s \gg \Lambda_{QCD}. As a by-product, we obtain the heavy quarkonium spectrum with the same accuracy in the situation m\alpha_s^2 \simg \Lambda_{QCD}. When ΛQCDmαs2\Lambda_{QCD} \ll m\alpha_s^2, this is equivalent to obtain the whole set of O(mαs(n+4)lnnαs)O(m\alpha_s^{(n+4)} \ln^n \alpha_s) terms in the heavy quarkonium spectrum.     Spontaneous and deliberate future thinking: A dual process account

Available online at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s00426-019-01262-7.In this article, we address an apparent paradox in the literature on mental time travel and mind-wandering: How is it possible that future thinking is both constructive, yet often experienced as occurring spontaneously? We identify and describe two ‘routes’ whereby episodic future thoughts are brought to consciousness, with each of the ‘routes’ being associated with separable cognitive processes and functions. Voluntary future thinking relies on controlled, deliberate and slow cognitive processing. The other, termed involuntary or spontaneous future thinking, relies on automatic processes that allows ‘fully-fledged’ episodic future thoughts to freely come to mind, often triggered by internal or external cues. To unravel the paradox, we propose that the majority of spontaneous future thoughts are ‘pre-made’ (i.e., each spontaneous future thought is a re-iteration of a previously constructed future event), and therefore based on simple, well-understood, memory processes. We also propose that the pre-made hypothesis explains why spontaneous future thoughts occur rapidly, are similar to involuntary memories, and predominantly about upcoming tasks and goals. We also raise the possibility that spontaneous future thinking is the default mode of imagining the future. This dual process approach complements and extends standard theoretical approaches that emphasise constructive simulation, and outlines novel opportunities for researchers examining voluntary and spontaneous forms of future thinking.Peer reviewe

    Exploring PERMA in spectator sport: Applying positive psychology to examine the individual-level benefits of sport consumption

    Sport spectating provides numerous benefits for sport organisations and individuals. In this paper we use a positive psychology approach to examine the individual-level benefits of sport consumption in order to investigate the activation of five domains of well-being: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment (PERMA). Using a two-study panel research design, we collected qualitative data from a sample of Australian Rules Football consumers. In the first study, we explored how the PERMA domains were activated during the season. Study two included a follow-up interview with eight initial respondents in the off-season. We found evidence of four PERMA domains that were activated in the sport spectator context by a variety of consumer experiences. The emergence of these domains in both studies suggests sport marketers would benefit from actions including: creating more social spaces within their stadiums, hosting regular off-season events, and creating social-media based competitions which promote fan engagement and interactions throughout the calendar year

    Feline Leukemia Virus and Other Pathogens as Important Threats to the Survival of the Critically Endangered Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus)

    BACKGROUND: The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is considered the most endangered felid species in the world. In order to save this species, the Spanish authorities implemented a captive breeding program recruiting lynxes from the wild. In this context, a retrospective survey on prevalence of selected feline pathogens in free-ranging lynxes was initiated. METHODOLOGY/ PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We systematically analyzed the prevalence and importance of seven viral, one protozoan (Cytauxzoon felis), and several bacterial (e.g., hemotropic mycoplasma) infections in 77 of approximately 200 remaining free-ranging Iberian lynxes of the Doñana and Sierra Morena areas, in Southern Spain, between 2003 and 2007. With the exception of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), evidence of infection by all tested feline pathogens was found in Iberian lynxes. Fourteen lynxes were feline leukemia virus (FeLV) provirus-positive; eleven of these were antigenemic (FeLV p27 positive). All 14 animals tested negative for other viral infections. During a six-month period in 2007, six of the provirus-positive antigenemic lynxes died. Infection with FeLV but not with other infectious agents was associated with mortality (p<0.001). Sequencing of the FeLV surface glycoprotein gene revealed a common origin for ten of the eleven samples. The ten sequences were closely related to FeLV-A/61E, originally isolated from cats in the USA. Endogenous FeLV sequences were not detected. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: It was concluded that the FeLV infection most likely originated from domestic cats invading the lynx's habitats. Data available regarding the time frame, co-infections, and outcome of FeLV-infections suggest that, in contrast to the domestic cat, the FeLV strain affecting the lynxes in 2007 is highly virulent to this species. Our data argue strongly for vaccination of lynxes and domestic cats in and around lynx's habitats in order to prevent further spread of the virus as well as reduction the domestic cat population if the lynx population is to be maintained
