Over the past two decades, international intervention in post-war settings has strictly followed liberal assumptions and practices. Efforts to build and shape the media in the aftermath of armed conflict are no exception. In setting the foundations for the rule of law, liberal democracy and free market, external actors have (re)defined what constitutes the mediascape – that is, the various spheres of communication within public discourse – and how to (re)construct it. Imprinted with modernity’s tenets and western assumptions about the public space, this approach has understood the mediascape narrowly as limited to traditional, established, liberal media, serving to validate particular actors and processes whilst obscuring, neglecting and shutting off global diversity. Law and technology, this paper argues, are the two main axes through which legitimation and exclusion are effected. A myopic focus on legal and technological aspects of the media reduces a rich space of local discourses, norms and practices to western-like media legislation, training and outlets, narrowing in turn the sites for addressing violence and building peace.

Professional development within theEffective Early Learning Programme: a contribution to a participatory and context-sensitive approach to ECEC evaluation

    Get PDF
This paper aims to describe and analyse a case study on professional development that was centred on the Effective Early Learning (EEL) Programme. This process was a part of a larger dissemination project of the EEL programme nationwide, designed to train specialised facilitators at a local level who could, in turn, support the professional development of their peers. From a theoretical stance, it focuses on a democratic and participatory approach to the evaluation and development of quality in ECEC contexts. The study involved the participation of 12 pre-school teachers and a specialised trainer. Results show perceived effects of the process of staff development on professional learning at the level of observation skills, reflection-on-action and critical insertion. Also, the participants recognised that experimentation in practice contexts and shared reflection were the most meaningful and facilitative strategies in their learning.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Initial professional studies for working with children under-three: Contemporary trends in Europe and Australasia

    Get PDF
Over the last few decades, the Western world has faced major changes in the social, economic and demographic realms that have influenced the way of conceptualizing and organizing the provision for children under-three and generated attention towards the professional preparation in this sector. This article aims to present an analysis of the initial professional studies (IPS) of core professionals that work in centre-based services, both in Europe and Australasia. Secondary data from policy documents and open access databases were analysed considering three interrelated aspects: ECEC governance and its implications for IPS, minimum qualification requirements and recent policy initiatives. Results show the positive impact of integrated systems in IPS, a wide diversity of qualification requirements, the recent efforts of some countries in levering professional preparation, but also the challenges and pitfalls concerning a collective (ethical) commitment towards the education of younger citizens

Assessment of workplace-based learning: key findings from an ECE professional master programme in Portugal

    Get PDF
Workplace-based experiences are considered centrally relevant in the professional preparation of prospective teachers. In spite of this, few studies have focused on the assessment of workplace based learning (WBL) in early childhood education (ECE). This study aims to examine pathways of professional learning of students attending an ECE professional Master programme in Portugal, based on an authentic and participatory approach to assessment. A cohort of 62 students participated in this exploratory study. Data were collected through an assessment grid organised in four domains (observation, planning, action and reflection) and 25 dimensions, in two moments: interim regulatory assessment and final assessment. Key findings point to statistically significant differences between the two moments, showing the progress of students at the level of competences in all domains and dimensions. Results allow to identify tendencies on students’ learning pathways in core domains of professionalism and represent an input for understanding the effectiveness of the ECE professional Master programme.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF

The new words kids hear from translated picturebooks

This study shows how the language in translated picturebooks is enriched by the use of rare words. We document how the translation of picturebooks from English to Portuguese results in the use of rare words in Portuguese. Evidence indicates that children learn new vocabulary through readings of picturebooks (Noble et al., 2019) and that translators make choices that contribute to the use of rare words (Ketola, 2018). The sample of 86 picturebooks was selected from a list recommended by the Portuguese national reading plan for 3-5-year-olds. The identification of rare words was done using a frequency analysis in both Portuguese, using ESCOLEX, and English, using the ChildFreq tool. Findings indicate that translated picturebooks use rich and varied lexicon and include an average of 6.6 rare words. Twenty-two percent of these words originate from literal and non-literal translations and are not rare in the original texts. This indicates that the process of translation contributes to increasing children's exposure to rare words.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Demola model aims to apply a methodology of co-creation processes, based on cooperation systems, having as objective applying science, technology and innovation policies in personal, educational and business contexts. Considering that the co-creation method is based on a joint initiative, in which providers and beneficiaries create value together, it is intended to demonstrate the impact this methodology brings to educational quality, namely its application to the Portuguese polytechnic higher education system. From the insights and ideas that emerged from the content analysis, this description is enriched and an integrated definition of co-creation of value is developed. Firstly, a theoretical contextualization of the definition of co-creation and its processes is proposed, giving emphasis to the model developed by Demola Global. Then, the impacts of its application on students, teachers and organizations, evaluated through surveys carried out after a first batch of co-creation projects, are presented and discussed. With this study, it is meant to identify the main changes that co-creation confers when applied in the learning context and which significant developments result from its use.

The objective of dissertation is to test a vector of the cognitive concept of decision making in boards. The definition of Strategic Myopia’s Ribeiro (2019) will be tested, specifically in identifying inconsistencies in the meaning of the concept of strategy and its relationship with the decision making process, in the use of scarce resources to achieve an organization's vision. The Strategic Question of research: "What are the factors that potentiate strategic myopia in Corporate Governance?" The research sought to identify gaps between decision-makers and boards in relation to the implementation of decisions, verify the consistency of the narratives among interviewees, trying to understand the reasons and their justification, as well as to determine a pattern. The methodological options followed a pragmatic-realistic methodology. The method adopted is qualitative, empirical and exploratory, involving elite interviews, with gender diversity, members of boards involved in the thematic of the dissertation. The results were analysed, compared and grouped into the three central research themes – Corporate Governance, Decision Making Process and Strategy. The narrative constitutes the core of the research, built on topics that emerged in the interviews, based on which conclusions were drawn and a conceptual framework developed. From the research emerged twelve gaps (CP) that were structured under the three central research themes and analysed in a matrix TOWS that aggregated nine strategic objectives. The concept of “Strategic Myopia” (Miopia Estratégica (2019)) was tested and verified, having emerged from the research two sub-concepts theorised as “Instrumental Strategic Myopia” and “Impulsive Strategic Myopia”. Based on the above-mentioned it was developed a "Tentative Strategic Governance Model” to mitigate situations of Impulsive Strategic Myopia and Instrumental Strategic Myopia, allowing the adoption of an optimized and consistent model in the decision-making process to mitigate and/or eliminate the barriers identified in the research.N/
