    Open charm and beauty production in hadron reactions

    The production of charmed and beauty hadrons in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions at high energies is analyzed within the modified quark-gluon string model (QGSM) including the internal motion of quarks in colliding hadrons. It is shown that using both the QGSM and NLO QCD one can describe the experimental data rather successfully in a wide region of transverse momenta. We also present some predictions for the future experiments on the beauty baryon production in pppp collisions at LHC energies and on the charmed meson production in pˉp{\bar p}p reactions at GSI energies.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures.     Evidence for non-hadronic interactions of charm degrees of freedom in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies

    Within the Hadron-String Dynamics (HSD) transport approach we study the suppression pattern of charmonia at RHIC with respect to centrality and rapidity employing various model concepts such as variants of the 'comover absorption' model or the 'charmonium melting' scenario. We find that especially the ratio of the forward to mid-rapidity nuclear modification factors of J/Psi (R_AA (forward) / R_AA (mid)) cannot be explained by the interactions with 'formed' comoving mesons or by the 'color screening mechanism' alone. Only when incorporating interactions of the c or c-bar quark with a pre-hadronic medium satisfactory results are obtained. A detailed comparison to the PHENIX data demonstrates that non-hadronic interactions are mandatory to describe the narrowing of the J/Psi rapidity distribution from p+p to central Au+Au collisions. The Psi' to J/Psi ratio is found to be crucial in disentangling the different charmonium absorption scenarios especially in the RHIC energy range. Furthermore, a comparison of the transport calculations to the statistical model of Gorenstein and Gazdzicki as well as the statistical hadronization model of Andronic et al. shows differences in the energy dependence as well as centrality dependence of the J/Psi to pion ratio which may be exploited experimentally to disentangle different concepts. We find additionally that the collective flow of charm in the HSD transport appears compatible with the data at SPS energies but substantially underestimates the data at top RHIC energies such that the large elliptic flow v_2 of charm seen experimentally has to be attributed to early interactions of non-hadronic degrees of freedom.Comment: 35 pages, 16 Figs, v2: additional figure and corresponding changes to the tex

    Monte Carlo for Jet Showers in the Medium

    The most commonly employed formalisms of radiative energy loss have been derived in the high- energy approximation. In its present form, it is reliable only for the medium modifications of inclusive particle spectra. Modifications to this formalism are expected to be important for less inclusive measurements. This is especially relevant for reconstructed jets in heavy-ion collisions, which are becoming available only recently. We present some ideas to overcome this limitation. Specifically, we show an implementation of radiative energy loss within a jet parton shower. This implementation has been done within the PYTHIA Monte Carlo event generator.     Bottomonium and Drell-Yan production in p-A collisions at 450 GeV

    The NA50 Collaboration has measured heavy-quarkonium production in p-A collisions at 450 GeV incident energy (sqrt(s) = 29.1 GeV). We report here results on the production of the Upsilon states and of high-mass Drell-Yan muon pairs (m > 6 GeV). The cross-section at midrapidity and the A-dependence of the measured yields are determined and compared with the results of other fixed-target experiments and with the available theoretical estimates. Finally, we also address some issues concerning the transverse momentum distributions of the measured dimuons.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Phys. Lett.

    Heavy ion event generator HYDJET++ (HYDrodynamics plus JETs)

    HYDJET++ is a Monte-Carlo event generator for simulation of relativistic heavy ion AA collisions considered as a superposition of the soft, hydro-type state and the hard state resulting from multi-parton fragmentation. This model is the development and continuation of HYDJET event generator (Lokhtin & Snigirev, 2006, EPJC, 45, 211). The main program is written in the object-oriented C++ language under the ROOT environment. The hard part of HYDJET++ is identical to the hard part of Fortran-written HYDJET and it is included in the generator structure as a separate directory. The soft part of HYDJET++ event is the "thermal" hadronic state generated on the chemical and thermal freeze-out hypersurfaces obtained from the parameterization of relativistic hydrodynamics with preset freeze-out conditions. It includes the longitudinal, radial and elliptic flow effects and the decays of hadronic resonances. The corresponding fast Monte-Carlo simulation procedure, C++ code FAST MC (Amelin et al., 2006, PRC, 74, 064901; 2008, PRC, 77, 014903) is adapted to HYDJET++. It is designed for studying the multi-particle production in a wide energy range of heavy ion experimental facilities: from FAIR and NICA to RHIC and LHC.Comment: 44 pages including 6 figures as EPS-files; prepared using LaTeX package for publication in Computer Physics Communication

    Measurement of heavy-flavour production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with ALICE

    The measurement of the heavy-flavour production cross sections in pp collisions at the LHC will allow to test perturbative QCD calculations in a new energy domain. Moreover, within the physics program of the ALICE experiment, it will provide the reference for the study of medium effects in Pb-Pb collisions, where heavy quarks are regarded as sensitive probes of parton-medium interaction dynamics. We present the status and first preliminary results of charm and beauty production measurements with the ALICE experiment, using hadronic D meson decays and semi-leptonic D and B meson decays, including the first cross section measurement of muons from heavy flavour decays at forward rapidity. We also describe the preliminary cross section measurement for J/psi production, obtained using the di-electron decay channel at central rapidity and the di-muon decay channel at forward rapidity.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, proceedings of the conference HARD PROBES 2010, Eilat, October 201
