    Mining Contrast Subspaces

    In this paper, we tackle a novel problem of mining contrast subspaces. Given a set of multidimensional objects in two classes C+  and C− and a query object o, we want to find top-k subspaces S that maximize the ratio of likelihood of o in C+  against that in C−. We demonstrate that this problem has important applications, and at the same time, is very challenging. It even does not allow polynomial time approximation. We present CSMiner, a mining method with various pruning techniques. CSMiner is substantially faster than the baseline method. Our experimental results on real data sets verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our method

    Phenotypic variation is the phenomenon in which clonal cells display different traits even under identical environmental conditions. This plasticity is thought to be important for processes including bacterial virulence, but direct evidence for its relevance is often lacking. For instance, variation in capsule production in the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae has been linked to different clinical outcomes, but the exact relationship between variation and pathogenesis is not well understood due to complex natural regulation. In this study, we use synthetic oscillatory gene regulatory networks (GRNs) based on CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) together with live cell imaging and cell tracking within microfluidics devices to mimic and test the biological function of bacterial phenotypic variation. We provide a universally applicable approach for engineering intricate GRNs using only two components: dCas9 and extended sgRNAs (ext-sgRNAs). Our findings demonstrate that variation in capsule production is beneficial for pneumococcal fitness in traits associated with pathogenesis providing conclusive evidence for this longstanding question

    Secure referee selection for fair and responsive peer-to-peer gaming

    Peer-to-Peer (P2P) architectures for Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG) provide better scalability than Client/Server (C/S); however, they increase the possibility of cheating. Recently proposed P2P protocols use trusted referees that simulate/validate the game to provide security equivalent to C/S. When selecting referees from untrusted peers, selecting non-colluding referees becomes critical. Further, referees should be selected such that the range and length of delays to players is minimised (maximising game fairness and responsiveness). In this paper we formally define the referee selection problem and propose two secure referee selection algorithms, SRS-1 and SRS-2, to solve it. Both algorithms ensure the probability of corrupt referees controlling a zone/region is below a predefined limit, while attempting to maximise responsiveness and fairness. The trade-off between responsiveness and fairness is adjustable for both algorithms. Simulations of three different scenarios show the effectiveness of our algorithms

    Assessment of impacts of climate change on rice and wheat in the Indo-Gangetic plains

    In this paper, the climate change scenarios of A2 and B2 for 2070-2100 time scale (denoted as 2080) for several key locations of India and its impact on rice and wheat crops based on regional climate model (PRECIS) were described. The PRECIS projects an increase in temperature over most parts of India especially in the IGP (Indo-Gangetic Plains), the region that presently experiences relatively low temperatures. Extreme high temperature episodes and rainfall intensity days are projected to become more frequent and the monsoon rainfall is also projected to increase. Rabi (mid Nov-March) season is likely to experience higher increase in temperature which could impact and hence become threat to the crops which really require low temperature for their growth. Climatic variability is also projected to increase in both A2 and B2 scenarios. All these projected changes are likely to reduce the wheat and rice yields in Indo-Gangetic plains of India. It is likely that there will be more number of years with low yields occurs towards the end of the century. Such yield reductions in rice and wheat crops due to climate change are mediated through reduction in crop duration, grain number and grain filling duration. The yield loss will be more in A2 scenario compared to B2. These quantitative estimates still have uncertainties associated with them, largely due to uncertainties in climate change projections, future technology growth, availability of inputs such as water for irrigation, changes in crop management and genotype. These projections nevertheless provide a direction of likely change in crop productivity in future climate change scenarios

    First measurement of Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^0 production in pp collisions at s\mathbf{\sqrt{s}} = 7 TeV

    The production of the charm-strange baryon Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^0 is measured for the first time at the LHC via its semileptonic decay into e+Ξ−Μe^+\Xi^-\nu_{\rm e} in pp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV with the ALICE detector. The transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 1 << pTp_{\rm T} << 8 GeV/cc at mid-rapidity, ∣y∣|y| << 0.5. The transverse momentum dependence of the Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^0 baryon production relative to the D0^0 meson production is compared to predictions of event generators with various tunes of the hadronisation mechanism, which are found to underestimate the measured cross-section ratio.Comment: 22 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 17, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/412

    Constraining the magnitude of the Chiral Magnetic Effect with Event Shape Engineering in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$ TeV

    In ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, the event-by-event variation of the elliptic flow v2v_2 reflects fluctuations in the shape of the initial state of the system. This allows to select events with the same centrality but different initial geometry. This selection technique, Event Shape Engineering, has been used in the analysis of charge-dependent two- and three-particle correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} =2.76 TeV. The two-particle correlator ⟹cos⁥(φα−φÎČ)⟩\langle \cos(\varphi_\alpha - \varphi_\beta) \rangle, calculated for different combinations of charges α\alpha and ÎČ\beta, is almost independent of v2v_2 (for a given centrality), while the three-particle correlator ⟹cos⁥(φα+φÎČ−2Κ2)⟩\langle \cos(\varphi_\alpha + \varphi_\beta - 2\Psi_2) \rangle scales almost linearly both with the event v2v_2 and charged-particle pseudorapidity density. The charge dependence of the three-particle correlator is often interpreted as evidence for the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME), a parity violating effect of the strong interaction. However, its measured dependence on v2v_2 points to a large non-CME contribution to the correlator. Comparing the results with Monte Carlo calculations including a magnetic field due to the spectators, the upper limit of the CME signal contribution to the three-particle correlator in the 10-50% centrality interval is found to be 26-33% at 95% confidence level.Comment: 20 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 tables, authors from page 15, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/382

    Energy dependence of exclusive J/ψJ/\psi photoproduction off protons in ultra-peripheral p-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 5.02 TeV

    The ALICE Collaboration has measured the energy dependence of exclusive photoproduction of J/ψJ/\psi vector mesons off proton targets in ultra-peripheral p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02 TeV. The e+^+e−^- and ÎŒ+Ό−\mu^+\mu^- decay channels are used to measure the cross section as a function of the rapidity of the J/ψJ/\psi in the range −2.5<y<2.7-2.5 < y < 2.7, corresponding to an energy in the Îł\gammap centre-of-mass in the interval 40<WÎłp<55040 < W_{\gamma\mathrm{p}}<550 GeV. The measurements, which are consistent with a power law dependence of the exclusive J/ψJ/\psi photoproduction cross section, are compared to previous results from HERA and the LHC and to several theoretical models.     Measurement of the production of charm jets tagged with D0^{0} mesons in pp collisions at s\sqrt{s}= 7 TeV

    The production of charm jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV was measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 6.236.23 nb−1{\rm nb}^{-1}, collected using a minimum-bias trigger. Charm jets are identified by the presence of a D0^0 meson among their constituents. The D0^0 mesons are reconstructed from their hadronic decay D0→^0\rightarrowK−π+^{-}\pi^{+}. The D0^0-meson tagged jets are reconstructed using tracks of charged particles (track-based jets) with the anti-kTk_{\mathrm{T}} algorithm in the jet transverse momentum range 5<pT,jetch<305<p_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\mathrm{ch}}<30 GeV/c{\rm GeV/}c and pseudorapidity ∣ηjet∣<0.5|\eta_{\rm jet}|<0.5. The fraction of charged jets containing a D0^0-meson increases with pT,jetchp_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\rm{ch}} from 0.042±0.004 (stat)±0.006 (syst)0.042 \pm 0.004\, \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.006\, \mathrm{(syst)} to 0.080±0.009 (stat)±0.008 (syst)0.080 \pm 0.009\, \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.008\, \rm{(syst)}. The distribution of D0^0-meson tagged jets as a function of the jet momentum fraction carried by the D0^0 meson in the direction of the jet axis (z∣∣chz_{||}^{\mathrm{ch}}) is reported for two ranges of jet transverse momenta, 5<pT,jetch<155<p_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\rm{ch}}<15 GeV/c{\rm GeV/}c and 15<pT,jetch<3015<p_{\rm{T,jet}}^{\rm{ch}}<30 GeV/c{\rm GeV/}c in the intervals 0.2<z∣∣ch<1.00.2<z_{||}^{\rm{ch}}<1.0 and 0.4<z∣∣ch<1.00.4<z_{||}^{\rm{ch}}<1.0, respectively. The data are compared with results from Monte Carlo event generators (PYTHIA 6, PYTHIA 8 and Herwig 7) and with a Next-to-Leading-Order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics calculation, obtained with the POWHEG method and interfaced with PYTHIA 6 for the generation of the parton shower, fragmentation, hadronisation and underlying event.Comment: 29 pages, 8 captioned figures, 3 tables, authors from page 24, published version, figures at http://alice-publications.web.cern.ch/node/525

    Measurement of isolated photon production in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV

    Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies ET between 20 and 80 GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon ET-differential yields, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for all PbPb reaction centralities.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters

    Measurement of the inclusive J/ψ\psi polarization at forward rapidity in pp collisions at s=8\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV

    We report on the measurement of the inclusive J/ψ\psi polarization parameters in pp collisions at a center of mass energy s=8\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb−1^{-1}. J/ψ\psi resonances are reconstructed in their di-muon decay channel in the rapidity interval 2.5<y<4.02.5 < y < 4.0 and over the transverse-momentum interval 2<pT<152 < p_{\rm T} < 15 GeV/cc. The three polarization parameters (λΞ\lambda_\theta, λφ\lambda_\varphi, λΞφ\lambda_{\theta\varphi}) are measured as a function of pTp_{\rm T} both in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames. The measured J/ψ\psi polarization parameters are found to be compatible with zero within uncertainties, contrary to expectations from all available predictions.
