    Non – invasive Fetal Scalp pH Measurement Utilizing Magnetic Induction Spectroscopy Technique

    Conventional fetal of fetal scalp sampling needs an invasive method to acquire blood sample to the fetus. In this paper describes a suggested non-invasive technique employing magnetic induction spectroscopy based on hydrogen conductivity in pH solution. Four types of transmitter-receiver (Tx-Rx) coil pairs are developed and test with frequency range from 2MHz to 10MHz. The phase reading from both reference channel, and sample channel is taken and the phase change is calculated from the differences between both channels. The result shows that the phase is decreased as the pH value of the solution increase. Circular pair of Tx-Rx shows a good sensitivity reading while square pair Tx-Rx shows a linearity result. From the result obtained, it is proved that single channel magnetic induction spectroscopy can be used as a non-invasive pH meter as an alternative to invasive pH meter

    Lokus dua dimensi ialah satu lintasan set titik-titik yang mematuhi syarat-syarat tertentu. `Locus in Cartesian Plane? ialah satu bahan bantu mengajar dan bahan bantu murid yang boleh mengaplikasi aktiviti `hands on` murid dalam memahami konsep abstrak Lokus dua dimensi. `Locus in Cartesian Plane? terdiri daripada satah Cartesian berliang pada setiap koordinat, garis nombor beralur, garis nombor berliang, jejari bernombor, segiempat beralur garis lurus berliang ditengah, garis nombor bersenggat butang klip dan marker pen. `Cartesian plane` digunakan sebagai satu satah untuk meletakkan titik dengan ditanda dengan klip butang . Jarak tetap pergerakan objek daripada satu titik atau garisan ditentukan dengan garis nombor samada garis nombor beralur, garis nombor berliang, garis nombor beralur atau jejari bernombor. Marker pen digunakan untuk menada lintasan titik-titik (lokus). Kajian telah dijalankan untuk mengatasi masalah yang dihadapi oleh pelajar matematik kelas 3 Bestari (2013) dalam menjawab soalan yang berkaitan masalah lokus. Masalah yang dihadapi pelajar ialah untuk memahami dan melukis lokus mengikut syarat-syarat tertentu dan menentukan persilangan dua lokus. Selepas ujian pos dijalankan, keputusan ujian pos telah menunjukkan peningkatan prestasi pelajar meningkat daripada markah purata 6% kepada kepada 75% Penggunaan Kaedah `Locus in Cartesian Plane? dapat meningkatkan kemahiran menguasai topik Lokus Dalam Dua Dimensi

    Jaundice assessement of newborn baby: a short review on Kramel’s Rule and magnetic induction spectroscopy

    Jaundice is a yellow discolouration of white eyes (sclera), skin and mucous membrane which is clinically apparent when the level of serum bilirubin rises up to 5 mg/dl. Jaundice could cause abnormalities in the newborn infant when production of bilirubin exceeds the normal range. Formation of bilirubin starts from degradation of hemoglobin and haemoprotein, which is released from red blood cell. Current technique in evaluating jaundice of new born infant is based on Kramer’s Rule but unfortunately it is not very applicable to the babies with dark skin. Thus Magnetic Induction Spectroscopy (MIS) is introduced as an alternative to this issue as MIS is a non-invasive, non-intrusive and electrodeless measurement scheme.     Meliponiculture or keeping stingless bee in Malaysia is expanding and has the potential to generate money for the the bottom 40% of income earners (B40). The increased production of stingless bee honey as a complementary medicine as a therapeutic medium for health for a variety of reasons. Thus, this study aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions on the therapeutic effects of stingless bee honey and its potential value in generating economy among the B40 community. Semi-structured interviews were carried out among the B40 community who participated in the Desa Kelulut project of Kampung Bukit Kuin, Kuantan. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. A total of six respondents interviewed in the study out of 20 participants. Four themes emerged, namely, benefit of stingless bee honey; market supply and economy; sustaining the farm; and facilitate income. The participants valued the beneficial properties of the honey toward health and acknowledged the potential of the stingless bee honey to be marketed in Malaysia as well as generating income for the B40 community of Kampung Bukit Kuin, Kuantan

    Elective cancer surgery in COVID-19-free surgical pathways during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: An international, multicenter, comparative cohort study

    PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks

    Vitamins D and E stimulate the PI3K-AKT signalling pathway in insulin-resistant SK-N-SH neuronal cells

    This study investigated the effects of vitamins D and E on an insulin-resistant model and hypothesized that this treatment would reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and improves insulin signalling. An insulin-resistant model was induced in SK-N-SH neuronal cells with a treatment of 250 nM insulin and re-challenged with 100 nM at two different incubation time (16 h and 24 h). The effects of vitamin D (10 and 20 ng/mL), vitamin E in the form of tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) (200 ng/mL) and the combination of vitamins D and E on insulin signalling markers (IR, PI3K, GLUT3, GLUT4, and p-AKT), glucose uptake and AD markers (GSK3β and TAU) were determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results demonstrated an improvement of the insulin signalling pathway upon treatment with vitamin D alone, with significant increases in IR, PI3K, GLUT3, GLUT4 expression levels, as well as AKT phosphorylation and glucose uptake, while GSK3β and TAU expression levels was decreased significantly. On the contrary, vitamin E alone, increased p-AKT, reduced the ROS as well as GSK3β and TAU but had no effect on the insulin signalling expression levels. The combination of vitamins D and E only showed significant increase in GLUT4, p-AKT, reduced ROS as well as GSK3β and TAU. Thus, the universal role of vitamin D, E alone and in combinations could be the potential nutritional agents in restoring the sensitivity of neuronal cells towards insulin and delaying the pathophysiological progression of AD
