Dipolar versus multipolar dynamos: the influence of the background density stratification
Context: dynamo action in giant planets and rapidly rotating stars leads to a
broad variety of magnetic field geometries including small scale multipolar and
large scale dipole-dominated topologies. Previous dynamo models suggest that
solutions become multipolar once inertia becomes influential. Being tailored
for terrestrial planets, most of these models neglected the background density
stratification. Aims: we investigate the influence of the density
stratification on convection-driven dynamo models. Methods: three-dimensional
nonlinear simulations of rapidly rotating spherical shells are employed using
the anelastic approximation to incorporate density stratification. A systematic
parametric study for various density stratifications and Rayleigh numbers
allows to explore the dependence of the magnetic field topology on these
parameters. Results: anelastic dynamo models tend to produce a broad range of
magnetic field geometries that fall on two distinct branches with either strong
dipole-dominated or weak multipolar fields. As long as inertia is weak, both
branches can coexist but the dipolar branch vanishes once inertia becomes
influential. The dipolar branch also vanishes for stronger density
stratifications. The reason is the concentration of the convective columns in a
narrow region close to the outer boundary equator, a configuration that favors
non-axisymmetric solutions. In multipolar solutions, zonal flows can become
significant and participate in the toroidal field generation. Parker dynamo
waves may then play an important role close to onset of dynamo action leading
to a cyclic magnetic field behavior. Conclusion: Our simulations also suggest
that the fact that late M dwarfs have dipolar or multipolar magnetic fields can
be explained in two ways. They may differ either by the relative influence of

Review of biorthogonal coupled cluster representations for electronic excitation
Single reference coupled-cluster (CC) methods for electronic excitation are
based on a biorthogonal representation (bCC) of the (shifted) Hamiltonian in
terms of excited CC states, also referred to as correlated excited (CE) states,
and an associated set of states biorthogonal to the CE states, the latter being
essentially configuration interaction (CI) configurations. The bCC
representation generates a non-hermitian secular matrix, the eigenvalues
representing excitation energies, while the corresponding spectral intensities
are to be derived from both the left and right eigenvectors. Using the
perspective of the bCC representation, a systematic and comprehensive analysis
of the excited-state CC methods is given, extending and generalizing previous
such studies. Here, the essential topics are the truncation error
characteristics and the separability properties, the latter being crucial for
designing size-consistent approximation schemes. Based on the general order
relations for the bCC secular matrix and the (left and right) eigenvector
matrices, formulas for the perturbation-theoretical (PT) order of the
truncation errors (TEO) are derived for energies, transition moments, and
property matrix elements of arbitrary excitation classes and truncation levels.
In the analysis of the separability properties of the transition moments, the
decisive role of the so-called dual ground state is revealed. Due to the use of
CE states the bCC approach can be compared to so-called intermediate state
representation (ISR) methods based exclusively on suitably orthonormalized CE
states. As the present analysis shows, the bCC approach has decisive advantages
over the conventional CI treatment, but also distinctly weaker TEO and
separability properties in comparison with a full (and hermitian) ISR method

Can information affect sensory perceptions? Evidence from a survey on Italian organic food consumers
This paper aims to investigate the influence of information on consumers’ preferences and sensory perceptions of organic food using a sample of 301 Italian organic food consumers. Consumers stated their preferences for “core organic” attributes, labels and information on food products and performed blind and informed tests on strawberry yoghurts and cookies. Data were analysed using descriptive analysis, Mann-Whitney U tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results revealed that consumers appreciate “core organic” attributes, like artisanal production and variability of sensory attributes. Comparing blind and informed tests, results showed that information affects the overall liking of products and consumers’ perception of product-specific sensory attributes. However, the influence of information on sensory perceptions depends on the product category, sensory attributes and the type of information provided
Background Light in Potential Sites for the ANTARES Undersea Neutrino Telescope
The ANTARES collaboration has performed a series of {\em in situ}
measurements to study the background light for a planned undersea neutrino
telescope. Such background can be caused by K decays or by biological
activity. We report on measurements at two sites in the Mediterranean Sea at
depths of 2400~m and 2700~m, respectively. Three photomultiplier tubes were
used to measure single counting rates and coincidence rates for pairs of tubes
at various distances. The background rate is seen to consist of three
components: a constant rate due to K decays, a continuum rate that
varies on a time scale of several hours simultaneously over distances up to at
least 40~m, and random bursts a few seconds long that are only correlated in
time over distances of the order of a meter. A trigger requiring coincidences
between nearby photomultiplier tubes should reduce the trigger rate for a
neutrino telescope to a manageable level with only a small loss in efficiency.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle

Treatment decisions and survival for people with small-cell lung cancer
Background: Chemotherapy improves survival for many patients with SCLC, and hence it is important to understand variations in practice and outcomes for this treatment strategy.
Methods: We used the National Lung Cancer Audit and Hospital Episodes Statistics to determine the proportion of patients who received chemotherapy for SCLC, and assess the effects of patient and organisational factors on the odds of receiving chemotherapy and of completing four cycles. We calculated median survival and used Cox regression to determine factors that predicted survival.
Results: Of 15 091 cases of SCLC, 70% received at least one cycle of chemotherapy. More deprived people were less likely to receive chemotherapy, but patients were more likely to receive chemotherapy, and to complete Xfour cycles, if they were referred to the lung cancer team by their GP. Median survival for those treated with chemotherapy was 12.9 months for limited and 7.3 months for extensive stage disease.
Conclusions: The Linked NLCA and HES data provide real-life measures of survival in people treated with chemotherapy and
show how this is influenced by patient and tumour characteristics. These data show the characteristics of patients who are less likely to complete a full course of treatment, an adverse predictor of survival
Small-cell lung cancer in England: trends in survival and chemotherapy using the National Lung Cancer Audit
Background: The purpose of this study was to identify trends in survival and chemotherapy use for individuals with smallcell lung cancer (SCLC) in England using the National Lung Cancer Audit (NLCA).
Methods: We used data from the NLCA database to identify people with histologically proven SCLC from 2004–2011. We
calculated the median survival by stage and assessed whether patient characteristics changed over time. We also assessed whether the proportion of patients with records of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy changed over time.
Results: 18,513 patients were diagnosed with SCLC in our cohort. The median survival was 6 months for all patients, 1 year for those with limited stage and 4 months for extensive stage. 69% received chemotherapy and this proportion changed very slightly over time (test for trends p = 0.055). Age and performance status of patients remained stable over the study period, but the proportion of patients staged increased (p-value,0.001), mainly because of improved data completeness. There has been an increase in the proportion of patients that had a record of receiving both chemotherapy and radiotherapy each year (from 19% to 40% in limited and from 9% to 21% in extensive stage from 2004 to 2011). Patients who received chemotherapy with radiotherapy had better survival compared with any other treatment (HR 0.24, 95% CI 0.23–0.25).
Conclusion: Since 2004, when the NLCA was established, the proportion of patients with SCLC having chemotherapy has remained static. We have found an upward trend in the proportion of patients receiving both chemotherapy and radiotherapy which corresponded to a better survival in this group, but as it only applied for a small proportion of patients, it was not enough to change the overall survival
Groundwater resources assessment using integrated geophysical techniques in the southwestern region of Peninsular Malaysia.
Combined geophysical techniques such as multi-electrode resistivity, induced polarization, and borehole geophysical techniques were carried out on volcano-sedimentary rocks in the north of Gemas as part of the groundwater resource’s investigations. The result identifies four resistivity units: the tuffaceous mudstone, tuffaceous sandstone, the tuff bed, and the shale layer. Two types of aquifer systems in terms of storage were identified within the area: one within a fracture system (tuff), which is the leaky area through which vertical flow of groundwater occurs, and an intergranular property of the sandy material of the aquifer which includes sandstone and tuffaceous sandstone. The result also reveals that the aquifer occupies a surface area of about 3,250,555 m2 with a mean depth of 43.71 m and a net volume of 9.798 × 107 m3. From the approximate volume of the porous zone (28 %) and the total aquifer volume, a usable capacity of (274.339 ± 30.177) × 107 m3 of water in the study area can be deduced. This study provides useful information that can be used to develop a much broader understanding of the nature of groundwater potential in the area and their relationship with the local geology
Place of death in patients with lung cancer: a retrospective cohort study from 2004-2013
Introduction: Many patients with cancer die in an acute hospital bed, which has been frequently identified as the least preferred location, with psychological and financial implications. This study looks at place and cause of death in patients with lung cancer and identifies which factors are associated with dying in an acute hospital bed versus at home.
Methods and Findings: We used the National Lung Cancer Audit linked to Hospital Episode Statistics and Office for National Statistics data to determine cause and place of death in those with lung cancer; both overall and by cancer Network. We used multivariate logistic regression to compare features of those who died in an acute hospital versus those who died at home.
Results: Of 143627 patients identified 40% (57678) died in an acute hospital, 29% (41957) died at home and 17% (24108) died in a hospice. Individual factors associated with death in an acute hospital bed compared to home were male sex, increasing age, poor performance status, social deprivation and diagnosis via an emergency route. There was marked variation between cancer Networks in place of death. The proportion of patients dying in an acute hospital ranged from 28% to 48%, with variation most notable in provision of hospice care (9% versus 33%). Cause of death in the majority was lung cancer (86%), with other malignancies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and ischaemic heart disease (IHD) comprising 9% collectively.
Conclusions: A substantial proportion of patients with lung cancer die in acute hospital beds and this is more likely with increasing age, male sex, social deprivation and in those with poor performance status. There is marked variation between Networks, suggesting a need to improve end-of-life planning in those at greatest risk, and to review the allocation of resources to provide more hospice beds, enhanced community support and ensure equal access
