Chicano/Mexican Culture as a Rational Instrument in the Human Sciences

    Get PDF
The use of culture as an analytical category by social scientists presents an opportunity to examine how professional discursive formations are used to make empirical assertions. The social fact of culture is neither uniform nor unitary. Traditionally, culture has been thought of as a product of disciplinary research, not necessarily a variable for empirical study. When culture is used as a tool or instrument of scientific methodology, it loses its fluid nature as a disciplinary discourse. In this essay, I examine the specific discussion of the epidemiologic health paradox that states that the Chicano/Mexican immigrant culture serves as a protective factor against many maladies that afflict other U.S. populations. Since the 1970s, this discussion of culture as a protective factor provides an interesting exposition of the uses of culture by empirical scholars

Diseño, elaboración e implementación de una unidad didáctica de educación ambiental : la formación teórica a luz de la práctica

    Get PDF

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

    Get PDF
Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel pˉpe+e\bar p p \to e^+ e^- is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, i.e.\textit{i.e.} pˉpπ+π\bar p p \to \pi^+ \pi^-, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance

The effect of quince leaf (Cydonia oblonga miller) decoction on testes in hypercholesterolemic rabbits: A pilot study

Current medical literature lacks any evidence of the protective effects of quince leaf on testes. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the effect of quince (Cydonia oblonga Miller) leaf decoction on testicular injury and impaired spermatogenesis induced by hypercholesterolemia in rabbits. Eleven mature New Zealand white male rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: group 1 (hypercholesterolemia, n=3), group 2 (hypercholesterolemia plus quince treatment, n=6), and group 3 (control, n=2). Groups 1 and 2 received a cholesterol-enriched diet for six weeks. Group 2 received C. oblongaleaf decoction as drinking supplement as well. After six weeks, a normal diet was substituted in groups 1 and 2 for another six weeks. Group 3 (control group) was maintained throughout the study on a regular diet. At the end of the 12th week, the left testes of the animals were resected for light microscopic study with particular attention to the maturity of germ cells in seminiferous tubules using Johnsen’s score. Increase in intertubular connective tissue and diameter of vessels, abundant spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes along the reduced germinal epithelium were noted in all rabbits of the group 1. The remaining animals in groups 2 and 3 had no significant changes in their testicular sections. The mean Johnsen’s score of group 1 (4.20±1.92) was significantly lower than that of group 2 (7.33±0.52) and group 3 (7.05±0.07). (P=0.01). Inconclusion, quince leaf decoction (C. oblonga Miller) protected rabbit testes and spermatogenesis from damage induced by hypercholesterolemia

OBJECTIVE: To determine perinatal outcomes of children of adolescent mothers against the ones of children of non-adolescent mothers in a second level class hospital in Mexico. METHODOLOGY: Case-control studies applied at “Hospital del Niño y la Mujer” from the National Health Department of Queretaro, Qro. from September 1st, 2015 to January 30th, 2016. A sample of 60 medical records of teenage pregnant women was studied. In addition to 90 medical records of women between 20 to 35 years old who had an obstetric event. The analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics. With a 95% confidence interval and a value of p < 0.05. RESULTS: The average age range was 17.38 and 25.33 respectively. The quantitative variables, statistically significant with a p<0.05, were: weight and Apgar score one minute after birth, whereas in weeks of gestation, height and Apgar score five minutes after birth and after days of hospitalization, there was no change. The most frequent qualitative variables among adolescent women were: complications during childbirth (15%), complications with the newborn (18.3%), and route of termination of pregnancy by caesarean section (70%), while in pregnant women between 20 to 35 years old, the complications during the pregnancy were more frequent (51.1%). CONCLUSIONS: Pregnancy among adolescent women continues to have a higher mortality rate than in 20 to 35 year-old women, although it is less frequent than in previous years. It is necessary to promote sexual education to reduce the incidence in this age group

Supramolecular Control of the Oxidative Addition as a Way To Improve the Catalytic Efficiency of Pincer-Rhodium (I) Complexes

H-1 NMR studies using a cationic complex with a pyridine-di-imidazolylidene pincer ligand of formula [Rh(CNC)(CO)](+) revealed that this compound showed high binding affinity with coronene in CH2Cl2. The interaction between coronene and the planar Rh-I complex is established by means of & pi;-stacking interactions. This interaction has a strong impact on the electron-donating strength of the pincer CNC ligand, which is increased significantly, as demonstrated by the shifting of the & nu;(CO) stretching bands to lower frequencies. The addition of coronene increases the reaction rate of the nucleophilic attack of methyl iodide on the rhodium (I) pincer complex, and also has a positive effect on the performance of the complex as a catalyst in the cycloisomerization of 4-pentynoic acid. These findings highlight the importance of supramolecular interactions for tuning the reactivity and catalytic activity of square-planar metal complexes.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume IWe gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (PID2021-127862NB-I00), and the Universitat Jaume I (UJI-B2020-01 and UJI-B2021-39).
