Collaboration or competition: The impact of incentive types on urban cycling
Bicycling is an important mode of transport for cities and many cities are interested in promoting its uptake by a larger portion of the population. Several cycling mobile applications primarily rely on competition as a motivation strategy for urban cyclists. Yet, collaboration may be equally useful to motivate and engage cyclists. The present research reports on an experiment comparing the impact of collaboration-based and competition-based rewards on users’ enjoyment, satisfaction, engagement with, and intention to cycle. It involved a total of 57 participants in three European cities: Münster (Germany), Castelló (Spain), and Valletta (Malta). Our results show participants from the study reporting higher enjoyment and engagement with cycling in the collaboration condition. However, we did not find a significant impact on the participants’ worldview when it comes to the intentions to start or increase cycling behavior. The results support the use of collaboration-based rewards in the design of game-based applications to promote urban cycling
Predicting Risk for Deer-Vehicle Collisions Using a Social Media Based Geographic Information System
As an experiment investigating social media as a data source for making management decisions, photo sharing websites were searched for data on deer sightings. Data about deer density and location are important factors in decisions related to herd management and transportation safety, but such data are often limited or not available. Results indicate that when combined with simple rules, data from photo sharing websites reliably predicted the location of road segments with high risk for deer-vehicle collisions as reported by volunteers to an internet site tracking roadkill. Use of Google Maps as the GIS platform was helpful in plotting and sharing data, measuring road segments and other distances, and overlaying geographical data. The ability to view satellite images and panoramic street views proved to be a particularly useful. As a general conclusion, the two independently collected sets of data from social media provided consistent information, suggesting investigative value to this data source. Overlaying two independently collected data sets can be a useful step in evaluating or mitigating reporting bias and human error in data taken from social media
MusA: Using Indoor Positioning and Navigation to Enhance Cultural Experiences in a museum
In recent years there has been a growing interest into the use of multimedia mobile guides in museum environments. Mobile devices have the capabilities to detect the user context and to provide pieces of information suitable to help visitors discovering and following the logical and emotional connections that develop during the visit. In this scenario, location based services (LBS) currently represent an asset, and the choice of the technology to determine users' position, combined with the definition of methods that can effectively convey information, become key issues in the design process. In this work, we present MusA (Museum Assistant), a general framework for the development of multimedia interactive guides for mobile devices. Its main feature is a vision-based indoor positioning system that allows the provision of several LBS, from way-finding to the contextualized communication of cultural contents, aimed at providing a meaningful exploration of exhibits according to visitors' personal interest and curiosity. Starting from the thorough description of the system architecture, the article presents the implementation of two mobile guides, developed to respectively address adults and children, and discusses the evaluation of the user experience and the visitors' appreciation of these application
The scale of VGI in map production: a perspective of European National Mapping Agencies
The perspective of European National Mapping Agencies (NMA) on the role of citizen sensing in map production was explored. The NMAs varied greatly in their engagement with the community generating volunteered geographic information (VGI) and in their future plans. From an assessment of NMA standard practices, it was evident that much VGI was acquired with a positional accuracy that, while less than that typically acquired by NMAs, actually exceeded the requirements of the nominal data capture scale used by most NMAs. Opportunities for VGI use in map revision and updating were evident, especially for agencies that use a continuous rather than cyclical updating policy. Some NMAs had also developed systems to engage with citizen sensors and examples are discussed. Only rarely was VGI used to collect data on features beyond the standard set used by the NMAs. The potential role of citizen sensing and so its current scale of use by NMAs is limited by a series of concerns, notably relating to issues of data quality, the nature and motivation of the contributors, legal issues, the sustainability of data source, and employment fears of NMA staff. Possible priorities for future research and development are identified to help ensure that the potential of VGI in mapping is realized
Characterizing New Channels of Communication: A Case Study of Municipal 311 Requests in Edmonton, Canada
City governments around the world are developing and expanding how they connect to citizens. Technologies play an important role in making this connection, and one frequent way that cities connect with citizens is through 311-style request systems. 311 is a non-emergency municipal notification system that uses telephone, email, web forms, and increasingly, mobile applications to allow citizens to notify government of infrastructure issues and make requests for municipal services. In many ways, this process of citizen contribution mirrors the provision of volunteered geographic information, that is spatially-referenced user generated content. This research presents a case study of the city of Edmonton, Canada, an early adopter of multi-channel 311 service request systems, including telephone, email, web form, and mobile app 311 request channels. Three methods of analysis are used to characterize and compare these different channels over three years of request data; a comparison of relative request share for each channel, a spatial hot spot analysis, and regression models to compare channel usage with sociodemographic variables. The results of this study indicate a shift in channel usage from traditional to Internet-enabled, that this shift is mirrored in the hotspots of request activity, and that specific digital inequalities exist that reinforce this distinction between traditional and Internet-enabled reporting channels

The growing challenge: a strategic review of HIV social care, support and information services across the UK.
This report appears 10 years after the widespread introduction of anti-retroviral therapies. Availability of effective HIV treatment has transformed the UK epidemic, producing a dramatic reduction in mortality and, for many people living with HIV, an increase in health and well-being. Yet, in spite of medical advances, many services seem to continue to follow a historical pattern. Against this background we commissioned Sigma Research to review service commissioning in the
HIV sector in order to inform members’ future grant making strategies.
Results in the report indicate that commissioners and providers of services believe that people from ethnic minority backgrounds, migrants, children, carers and people from different age groups have unmet needs. Other findings in this research indicate that many more services have been commissioned recently for Africans, on the basis that Africans make up a significant part of the current UK epidemic. We believe this is a valid focus but are discouraged by the approach to these varied communities as one homogenous population. It seems timely to ask whether configuring services to follow broad epidemiological categories without any further refinement is sufficient. The report further suggests that commissioners and providers believe the needs of gay men are well met. This is a surprise and does not accord with the views and experiences of many gay men living with the virus.
A significant minority of HIV positive people are neither gay men nor Africans. Even within these two groups the experience of living with HIV varies by age, geographical location and length of infection. HIV positive individuals may look at their needs from another starting point – for example, as a woman or an injecting drug user. The picture appears to be, increasingly, one of fragmentation and isolation. This poses the question: do we have the service models to meet the needs of HIV positive people in the third decade of the epidemic?
The report further shows that many of the problems with access to services – including housing and welfare rights – are structural problems, present across health and social care, and are not unique to HIV. HIV support services are funded from budgets which must also contain the increasing costs of anti-retroviral drugs and other medical interventions, and which are therefore subject to continuous attrition and dissaggregation.
Also highlighted is the lack of needs-based planning, the diminishing levels of knowledge and expertise among commissioners and the lack of a national strategic vision. In view of the fact that the Government has established a cross-departmental task force to address the epidemic in developing countries this lack of a national strategic vision is lamentable and has the effect of keeping the issue off the political agenda and almost invisible within local funding priorities. This is a concern both to us as funders and to agencies working within the HIV voluntary sector
