    Design and validation of a structural health monitoring system for aeronautical structures.

    Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an area where the main objective is the verification of the state or the health of the structures in order to ensure proper performance and maintenance cost savings using a sensor network attached to the structure, continuous monitoring and algorithms. Different benefits are derived from the implementation of SHM, some of them are: knowledge about the behavior of the structure under different loads and different environmental changes, knowledge of the current state in order to verify the integrity of the structure and determine whether a structure can work properly or whether it needs to be maintained or replaced and, therefore, to reduce maintenance costs. The paradigm of damage identification (comparison between the data collected from the structure without damages and the current structure in orderto determine if there are any changes) can be tackled as a pattern recognition problem. Some statistical techniques as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) or Independent Component Analysis (ICA) are very useful for this purpose because they allow obtaining the most relevant information from a large amount of variables. This thesis uses an active piezoelectric system to develop statistical data driven approaches for the detection, localization and classification of damages in structures. This active piezoelectric system is permanently attached to the surface of the structure under test in order to apply vibrational excitations and sensing the dynamical responses propagated through the structure at different points. As pattern recognition technique, PCA is used to perform the main task of the proposed methodology: to build a base-line model of the structure without damage and subsequentlyto compare the data from the current structure (under test) with this model. Moreover, different damage indices are calculated to detect abnormalities in the structure under test. Besides, the localization of the damage can be determined by means of the contribution of each sensor to each index. This contribution is calculated by several different methods and their comparison is performed. To classify different damages, the damage detection methodology is extended using a Self-Organizing Map (SOM), which is properly trained and validated to build a pattern baseline model using projections of the data onto the PCAmodel and damage detection indices. This baseline is further used as a reference for blind diagnosis tests of structures. Additionally, PCA is replaced by ICAas pattern recognition technique. A comparison between the two methodologies is performed highlighting advantages and disadvantages. In order to study the performance of the damage classification methodology under different scenarios, the methodology is tested using data from a structure under several different temperatures. The methodologies developed in this work are tested and validated using different structures, in particular an aircraft turbine blade, an aircraft wing skeleton, an aircraft fuselage,some aluminium plates and some composite matarials plates.La monitorización de daños en estructuras (SHM por sus siglas en inglés) es un área que tiene como principal objetivo la verificación del estado o la salud de la estructura con el fin de asegurar el correcto funcionamiento de esta y ahorrar costos de mantenimiento. Para esto se hace uso de sensores que son adheridos a la estructura, monitorización continua y algoritmos. Diferentes beneficios se obtienen de la aplicación de SHM, algunos de ellos son: el conocimiento sobre el desempeño de la estructura cuando esta es sometida a diversas cargas y cambios ambientales, el conocimiento del estado actual de la estructura con el fin de determinar la integridad de la estructura y definir si esta puede trabajar adecuadamente o si por el contrario debe ser reparada o reemplazada con el correspondiente beneficio del ahorro de gastos de mantenimiento. El paradigma de la identificación de daños (comparación entre los datos obtenidos de la estructura sin daños y la estructura en un estado posterior para determinar cambios) puede ser abordado como un problema de reconocimiento de patrones. Algunas técnicas estadísticas tales como Análisis de Componentes Principales (PCA por sus siglas en inglés) o Análisis de Componentes Independientes (ICA por sus siglas en ingles) son muy útiles para este propósito puesto que permiten obtener la información más relevante de una gran cantidad de variables. Esta tesis hace uso de un sistema piezoeléctrico activo para el desarrollo de algoritmos estadísticos de manejo de datos para la detección, localización y clasificación de daños en estructuras. Este sistema piezoeléctrico activo está permanentemente adherido a la superficie de la estructura bajo prueba con el objeto de aplicar señales vibracionales de excitación y recoger las respuestas dinámicas propagadas a través de la estructura en diferentes puntos. Como técnica de reconocimiento de patrones se usa Análisis de Componentes Principales para realizar la tarea principal de la metodología propuesta: construir un modelo PCA base de la estructura sin daño y posteriormente compararlo con los datos de la estructura bajo prueba. Adicionalmente, algunos índices de daños son calculados para detectar anormalidades en la estructura bajo prueba. Para la localización de daños se usan las contribuciones de cada sensor a cada índice, las cuales son calculadas mediante varios métodos de contribución y comparadas para mostrar sus ventajas y desventajas. Para la clasificación de daños, se amplia la metodología de detección añadiendo el uso de Mapas auto-organizados, los cuales son adecuadamente entrenados y validados para construir un modelo patrón base usando proyecciones de los datos sobre el modelo PCA base e índices de detección de daños. Este patrón es usado como referencia para realizar un diagnóstico ciego de la estructura. Adicionalmente, dentro de la metodología propuesta, se utiliza ICA en lugar de PCA como técnica de reconocimiento de patrones. Se incluye también una comparación entre la aplicación de las dos técnicas para mostrar las ventajas y desventajas. Para estudiar el desempeño de la metodología de clasificación de daños bajo diferentes escenarios, esta se prueba usando datos obtenidos de una estructura sometida a diferentes temperaturas. Las metodologías desarrolladas en este trabajo fueron probadas y validadas usando diferentes estructuras, en particular un álabe de turbina, un esqueleto de ala y un fuselaje de avión, así como algunas placas de aluminio y de material compuest

    Advanced Data Analytics Methodologies for Anomaly Detection in Multivariate Time Series Vehicle Operating Data

    Early detection of faults in the vehicle operating systems is a research domain of high significance to sustain full control of the systems since anomalous behaviors usually result in performance loss for a long time before detecting them as critical failures. In other words, operating systems exhibit degradation when failure begins to occur. Indeed, multiple presences of the failures in the system performance are not only anomalous behavior signals but also show that taking maintenance actions to keep the system performance is vital. Maintaining the systems in the nominal performance for the lifetime with the lowest maintenance cost is extremely challenging and it is important to be aware of imminent failure before it arises and implement the best countermeasures to avoid extra losses. In this context, the timely anomaly detection of the performance of the operating system is worthy of investigation. Early detection of imminent anomalous behaviors of the operating system is difficult without appropriate modeling, prediction, and analysis of the time series records of the system. Data based technologies have prepared a great foundation to develop advanced methods for modeling and prediction of time series data streams. In this research, we propose novel methodologies to predict the patterns of multivariate time series operational data of the vehicle and recognize the second-wise unhealthy states. These approaches help with the early detection of abnormalities in the behavior of the vehicle based on multiple data channels whose second-wise records for different functional working groups in the operating systems of the vehicle. Furthermore, a real case study data set is used to validate the accuracy of the proposed prediction and anomaly detection methodologies

    Modelling of a protective scheme for AC 330 kV transmission line in Nigeria

    Transmission lines play a vital role in the reliable and efficient delivery of electrical power over long distances, and these lines are affected by faults that occur due to lightning strikes, equipment failures, human, animal or vegetation interference, environmental factors, ageing equipment, voltage sag or grid faults adverse effects on the line. Therefore, protecting these transmission lines becomes crucial with the increasing demand for electricity and the need to ensure grid stability. The modelling process involves the development of a comprehensive protection scheme utilising modern technologies and advanced algorithms. The protection scheme encompasses various elements, including fault detection, fault classification, fault location, and fault clearance. It incorporates intelligent devices, such as protective relays and communication systems, to enable rapid and accurate fault identification and isolation. First, a 330 kV, 500 km three-phase Delta transmission line is modelled using MATLAB/SIMULINK. A section of the Delta network in Delta State Nigeria was used since the entire Nigeria 330 kV network is large. Faulty current and voltage data were generated for training using the CatBoost, 93340 data sizes comprising fault data from three-phase current and voltage extracted from the Delta transmission line model in Nigeria were designed, and twelve fault conditions were used. The CatBoost classifier was employed to classify the faults after different machine language algorithm was used to train the same data with other parameters. The trainer achieved the best accuracy of 99.54%, with an error of 0.46%, at 748 iterations out of 1000 compared to GBoost, XBoost and other classification techniques. Second, the Artificial Neural Network technique was used to train this data, and an accuracy of 100% was attained for fault detection and about 99.5% for fault localisation at different distances with 0.0017 microseconds of detection and an average error of 0% to 0.5%. This model performs better than Support Vector Machine and Principal Component Analysis with a higher fault detection time. The effect of noise signal on the ANN model was studied, and the discrete wavelet technique was used to de-noise the signal for better performance and to enhance the model’s accuracy during transient. Third, the wavelet transforms as a data extraction model to detect the threshold value of current and voltage and the coordination time for the backup relay to trip if the primary relay does not operate or clear the fault on time. The difference between the proposed model and the model without the threshold value was analysed. The simulated result shows that the trip time of the two relays demonstrates a fast and precise trip time of 60% to 99.87% compared to other techniques used without the threshold values. The proposed model can eliminate the trial-and-error in programming the instantaneous overcurrent relay setting for optimal performance. Fourth, the PSO-PID controller algorithm was used to moderate the load frequency of the transmission network. Due to the instability between the generation and distribution, there is always a switch in the stability of the transmission or load frequency; therefore, the PSO-PID algorithm was used to stabilise the Delta power station as a pilot survey from the Nigerian transmission network. Also, a hybrid system with five types of generation and two load centres was used in this model. It has been shown that the proposed control algorithm is effective and improves system performance significantly. As a result, the suggested PSO-PID controller is recommended for producing high-quality, dependable electricity. Moreover, the PSO-PID algorithm produces 0.00 seconds settling time and 0.0005757 ITAE. It’s essential to carefully consider potential drawbacks like complexity and computational overhead, sensitivity to algorithm parameters, potential parameter convergence and limited interpretability and assess their impact on the specific LFC application before implementing a PSO-PID controller in a power system. When implemented with the model in this research, the Delta transmission line network will reduce the excessive fault that occurs in the transmission line and improve the energy efficiency of the entire network when replicated with the Nigerian network. Generally, for the effective design and implementation of the protection scheme of the 330 kV transmission line, the fault must be detected and classified, and the exact location of the fault must be ascertained before the relay protection and load frequency control will be applied for effective fault management and control system

    Application of infrared thermography in computer aided diagnosis

    The invention of thermography, in the 1950s, posed a formidable problem to the research community: What is the relationship between disease and heat radiation captured with Infrared (IR) cameras? The research community responded with a continuous effort to find this crucial relationship. This effort was aided by advances in processing techniques, improved sensitivity and spatial resolution of thermal sensors. However, despite this progress fundamental issues with this imaging modality still remain. The main problem is that the link between disease and heat radiation is complex and in many cases even non-linear. Furthermore, the change in heat radiation as well as the change in radiation pattern, which indicate disease, is minute. On a technical level, this poses high requirements on image capturing and processing. On a more abstract level, these problems lead to inter-observer variability and on an even more abstract level they lead to a lack of trust in this imaging modality. In this review, we adopt the position that these problems can only be solved through a strict application of scientific principles and objective performance assessment. Computing machinery is inherently objective; this helps us to apply scientific principles in a transparent way and to assess the performance results. As a consequence, we aim to promote thermography based Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems. Another benefit of CAD systems comes from the fact that the diagnostic accuracy is linked to the capability of the computing machinery and, in general, computers become ever more potent. We predict that a pervasive application of computers and networking technology in medicine will help us to overcome the shortcomings of any single imaging modality and this will pave the way for integrated health care systems which maximize the quality of patient care
