    Generative Modelling for Unsupervised Score Calibration

    Score calibration enables automatic speaker recognizers to make cost-effective accept / reject decisions. Traditional calibration requires supervised data, which is an expensive resource. We propose a 2-component GMM for unsupervised calibration and demonstrate good performance relative to a supervised baseline on NIST SRE'10 and SRE'12. A Bayesian analysis demonstrates that the uncertainty associated with the unsupervised calibration parameter estimates is surprisingly small.Comment: Accepted for ICASSP 201

    Storytelling and social networking as tools for digital and mobile marketing of luxury fashion brands

    This research intends to discover what the current strategies in digital marketing that are being carried out by brands in the luxury fashion sector are. It is intended to identify the most relevant aspects in the interaction of brands with their audiences in a digital and mobile environment, for which qualitative techniques have been used, through content analysis and in-depth interviews. We have found that, among others, the principle of "storytelling" is one of the key strategies in digital marketing, this principle is found in video marketing strategies, social media, events and exhibitions open to the public, which seek to interact with public and show its history

    La mitificación de Maratón (y la creación de la moderna carrera de maratón)

    La victoria de los atenienses sobre los persas en la batalla de Maratón (490 a.C.), sin dejar de ser historia, rápidamente se hace leyenda, en Grecia en general y muy particularmente en Atenas. Los muertos en el combate fueron "santificados", es decir, elevados a la categoría de "héroes", un término que en su acepción religiosa designa a los muertos que desde su tumba pueden ejercer sobre los vivos una influencia benéfica y que por ello son objeto de culto; y en general "los "combatientes en Maratón" (Marathonomáchai) se convertirán durante toda la Antigüedad, e incluso más adelante en la tradición cultural europea hasta nuestros tiempos, en símbolo de la lucha contra la esclavitud y la tiranía (representada por el imperio persa) en defensa de la libertad (encarnada en el modo de vida y las instituciones políticas de los griegos), y símbolo también de ciudadanos honestos y comprometidos, que ponen el interés de la comunidad ciudadana por delante de sus propios intereses e incluso de su propia vida. La victoria en Maratón fue un motivo recurrente e inevitable de la propaganda política ateniense, que terminó por convertirse, particularmente en época imperial, en un tópico retórico, del que se abusa hasta extremos que rozan lo ridículo. Ya desde el propio siglo V a.C. numerosos textos literarios (poemas de Simónides, discursos de Lisias, Isócrates, Aspasia-Platón, Hiperides, Demóstenes) y otras manifestaciones artísticas, como las composiciones pictóricas que figuraban en el "Pórtico Pintado" del ágora de Atenas, testimonian que los "héroes de Maratón" (y de otras batallas de las Guerras Médicas) son equiparados con los héroes del pasado legendario, sobre todo con los que fueron a Troya. No resulta, entonces, sorprendente que la batalla de Maratón generara enseguida en torno a ella una serie de hechos legendarios más o menos creíbles, o directamente increíbles, como la historia de la mano de Cinegiro, el hermano de Esquilo, o la leyenda de Filípides, el corredor de Maratón, que termina convirtiéndose en el símbolo de la batalla en la tradición cultural europea, sobre todo a partir del siglo XVIII, y acaba incluso dando origen en los Juegos Olímpicos contemporáneos a una de las pruebas más carismáticas del atletismo moderno.Universidad de Málaga.     The formation of spiral arms and rings in barred galaxies

    In this and in a previous paper (Romero-Gomez et al. 2006) we propose a theory to explain the formation of both spirals and rings in barred galaxies using a common dynamical framework. It is based on the orbital motion driven by the unstable equilibrium points of the rotating bar potential. Thus, spirals, rings and pseudo-rings are related to the invariant manifolds associated to the periodic orbits around these equilibrium points. We examine the parameter space of three barred galaxy models and discuss the formation of the different morphological structures according to the properties of the bar model. We also study the influence of the shape of the rotation curve in the outer parts, by making families of models with rising, flat, or falling rotation curves in the outer parts. The differences between spiral and ringed structures arise from differences in the dynamical parameters of the host galaxies. The results presented here will be discussed and compared with observations in a forthcoming paper.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted in A&A.     ROBUST SPEAKER RECOGNITION BASED ON LATENT VARIABLE MODELS

    Automatic speaker recognition in uncontrolled environments is a very challenging task due to channel distortions, additive noise and reverberation. To address these issues, this thesis studies probabilistic latent variable models of short-term spectral information that leverage large amounts of data to achieve robustness in challenging conditions. Current speaker recognition systems represent an entire speech utterance as a single point in a high-dimensional space. This representation is known as "supervector". This thesis starts by analyzing the properties of this representation. A novel visualization procedure of supervectors is presented by which qualitative insight about the information being captured is obtained. We then propose the use of an overcomplete dictionary to explicitly decompose a supervector into a speaker-specific component and an undesired variability component. An algorithm to learn the dictionary from a large collection of data is discussed and analyzed. A subset of the entries of the dictionary is learned to represent speaker-specific information and another subset to represent distortions. After encoding the supervector as a linear combination of the dictionary entries, the undesired variability is removed by discarding the contribution of the distortion components. This paradigm is closely related to the previously proposed paradigm of Joint Factor Analysis modeling of supervectors. We establish a connection between the two approaches and show how our proposed method provides improvements in terms of computation and recognition accuracy. An alternative way to handle undesired variability in supervector representations is to first project them into a lower dimensional space and then to model them in the reduced subspace. This low-dimensional projection is known as "i-vector". Unfortunately, i-vectors exhibit non-Gaussian behavior, and direct statistical modeling requires the use of heavy-tailed distributions for optimal performance. These approaches lack closed-form solutions, and therefore are hard to analyze. Moreover, they do not scale well to large datasets. Instead of directly modeling i-vectors, we propose to first apply a non-linear transformation and then use a linear-Gaussian model. We present two alternative transformations and show experimentally that the transformed i-vectors can be optimally modeled by a simple linear-Gaussian model (factor analysis). We evaluate our method on a benchmark dataset with a large amount of channel variability and show that the results compare favorably against the competitors. Also, our approach has closed-form solutions and scales gracefully to large datasets. Finally, a multi-classifier architecture trained on a multicondition fashion is proposed to address the problem of speaker recognition in the presence of additive noise. A large number of experiments are conducted to analyze the proposed architecture and to obtain guidelines for optimal performance in noisy environments. Overall, it is shown that multicondition training of multi-classifier architectures not only produces great robustness in the anticipated conditions, but also generalizes well to unseen conditions

    Considerations about rodent models of binge eating episodes

    A binge eating episode is defined as an uncontrolled event of hyperphagia, in which people quickly eat a large amount of food while feeling a sense of loss of control over eating (Wolfe et al., 2009). Binge eating episodes are observed in a variety of human disorders including bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), and the binge/purge subtype of anorexia nervosa (AN) (Berger and Tanofsky-Kraff, 2012). Binge eating episodes are also present in overweight and obese people, as well as non-clinical populations under specific circumstances such as stress. The etiology of this behavior is currently unknown. The use of rodent models has been essential for understanding the pathogenesis of many human diseases; however, it is challenging to mimic all features of human binge eating in rodent models (Corwin and Buda-Levin, 2004; Perello et al., 2010a). In particular, these models should not only display the objective characteristics of a binge eating episode, namely the consumption of a large amount of food in a short period of time, but also the subjective characteristics of the feeling of loss of control. Recently, we examined the neuronal circuitries activated in naïve mice allowed to spontaneously eat a high fat diet (HFD) pellet for 2 h (Valdivia et al., 2014). We found that satiated mice with free access to regular chow rapidly consume a significant amount of HFD when exposed to it, and that HFD intake recruits centers of the mesolimbic pathway, which are known to be activated in human beings displaying binge eating behavior (see below). Experts in the field agreed that our simple model of HFD overconsumption could be relevant for studying neuronal aspects of binge eating behaviors. However, some reviewers argued that it was misleading to describe our model as a model of binge eating. Some criticisms were that our model lacked indications of feelings of loss of control, repeated feeding episodes, escalation of intake over time, a significant level of hyperphagia, and evidence that bingeing occurred in the face of aversive consequences. The notable divergence in the opinion of the journal´s reviewers made evident that a comprehensive debate about rodent binge eating models is needed. Here, we briefly present our opinion about the features that a rodent model should fulfill in order to be considered a reasonable model of binge eating episodes and its implications in terms of the neuronal circuits involved.Fil: Perello, Mario.
