    Modeling fuzzy criteria preference to evaluate tradespace of system alternatives

    2018 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.This dissertation explores techniques for evaluating system concepts using the point of diminishing marginal utility to determine a best value alternative with an optimal combination of risk, performance, reliability, and life cycle cost. The purpose of this research is to address the uncertainty of customer requirements and assess crisp and fuzzy design parameters to determine a best value system. At the time of this research, most commonly used decision analysis (DA) techniques use minimum and maximum values under a specific criterion to evaluate each alternative. These DA methods do not restrict scoring beyond the point of diminished marginal utility resulting in superfluous capabilities and overvalued system alternatives. Using these models, an alternative being evaluated could receive significantly higher scores when reported capabilities are greater than ideal customer requirements. This problem is pronounced whenever weights are applied to criteria where excessive capabilities are recorded. The techniques explored in this dissertation utilize fuzzy membership functions to restrict scoring for alternatives that provide excess capabilities beyond ideal customer requirements. This research investigates and presents DA techniques for evaluating system alternatives that determine an ideal compromise between risk, performance criteria, reliability and life cycle costs

    PID control system analysis, design, and technology

    Designing and tuning a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller appears to be conceptually intuitive, but can be hard in practice, if multiple (and often conflicting) objectives such as short transient and high stability are to be achieved. Usually, initial designs obtained by all means need to be adjusted repeatedly through computer simulations until the closed-loop system performs or compromises as desired. This stimulates the development of "intelligent" tools that can assist engineers to achieve the best overall PID control for the entire operating envelope. This development has further led to the incorporation of some advanced tuning algorithms into PID hardware modules. Corresponding to these developments, this paper presents a modern overview of functionalities and tuning methods in patents, software packages and commercial hardware modules. It is seen that many PID variants have been developed in order to improve transient performance, but standardising and modularising PID control are desired, although challenging. The inclusion of system identification and "intelligent" techniques in software based PID systems helps automate the entire design and tuning process to a useful degree. This should also assist future development of "plug-and-play" PID controllers that are widely applicable and can be set up easily and operate optimally for enhanced productivity, improved quality and reduced maintenance requirements

    Decision Making of Environmental Engineers on Project Selection

    Some environmental engineers do not understand how to perceive profitable opportunities in redeveloping the large number of contaminated brownfield sites in New Jersey. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to find effective decision-making strategies that help environmental engineers acquire profitable environmental redevelopment projects. The target population consisted of 4 environmental engineers in an environmental organization in Camden County, New Jersey who possessed proven decision-making strategies that helped them acquire profitable environmental redevelopment projects in the past 5 years. The conceptual framework for this study was the multiple criteria decision method (MCDM). Semistructured interviews were conducted with the engineers, and company documents were additional sources of data gathered. Triangulation and member checking were used to ensure the trustworthiness of interpretations. Five themes emerged from the analyses relating to strategies for an MCDM assessment in project management, a go/no-go assessment in project selections, education and training, ethics as an organizational value, and project management. These findings may lead to social change in Camden County, New Jersey community organizations, such as schools, daycare centers, and local businesses, which may benefit from the knowledge and safety recommendations of remediation decision making. Furthermore, these findings may provide opportunities for environment organizations to teach and train stakeholders on environmental processes while providing profitable opportunities to shareholders through sustainable practices

    A comparative evaluation of interactive segmentation algorithms

    In this paper we present a comparative evaluation of four popular interactive segmentation algorithms. The evaluation was carried out as a series of user-experiments, in which participants were tasked with extracting 100 objects from a common dataset: 25 with each algorithm, constrained within a time limit of 2 min for each object. To facilitate the experiments, a “scribble-driven” segmentation tool was developed to enable interactive image segmentation by simply marking areas of foreground and background with the mouse. As the participants refined and improved their respective segmentations, the corresponding updated segmentation mask was stored along with the elapsed time. We then collected and evaluated each recorded mask against a manually segmented ground truth, thus allowing us to gauge segmentation accuracy over time. Two benchmarks were used for the evaluation: the well-known Jaccard index for measuring object accuracy, and a new fuzzy metric, proposed in this paper, designed for measuring boundary accuracy. Analysis of the experimental results demonstrates the effectiveness of the suggested measures and provides valuable insights into the performance and characteristics of the evaluated algorithms

    Factors influencing the adoption of mobile services consumers' preferences using analytic hierarchy process

    The rapid and widespread development of innovations in mobile services is changing societies and improving lives around the world. Due to lagging adoption, many of these new innovations have yet failed to generate revenue that was expected by mobile network operators, application and content developers. There are several factors which are affecting the service adoption by consumers. This paper aims to provide practitioners and academics, an insight on what consumers' preferences are by using an Analytic Hierarchy Approach (AHP). The objective of this paper is to identify factors influencing the adoption of the mobile services. In this study we have considered Payment Mode, Functionality, Added Value and PQCP (perceived quality, cost and performance) as the main service adoption factors. The survey results indicate that Functionality is the most important influencing factor for the respondents, followed by Added Value, PQCP and Payment Mode.Adoption,AHP,Mobile Value Services,Consumer's Preferences

    Data Analytic Approach to Support the Activation of Special Signal Timing Plans in Response to Congestion

    Improving arterial network performance has become a major challenge that is significantly influenced by signal timing control. In recent years, transportation agencies have begun focusing on Active Arterial Management Program (AAM) strategies to manage the performance of arterial streets under the flagship of Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O) initiatives. The activation of special traffic signal plans during non-recurrent events is an essential component of AAM and can provide significant benefits in managing congestion. Events such as surges in demands or lane blockages can create queue spillbacks, even during off-peak periods resulting in delays and spillbacks to upstream intersections. To address this issue, some transportation agencies have started implementing processes to change the signal timing in real time based on traffic signal engineer/expert observations of incident and traffic conditions at the intersections upstream and downstream of congested locations. This dissertation develops methods to automate and enhance such decisions made at traffic management centers. First, a method is developed to learn from experts’ decisions by utilizing a combination of Recursive Partitioning and Regression Decision Tree (RPART) and Fuzzy Rule-Based System (FRBS) to deal with the vagueness and uncertainty of human decisions. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of this method in selecting plans to reduce congestion during non-recurrent events. However, the method can only recommend the changes in green time to the movement affected by the incident and does not give an optimized solution that considers all movements. Thus, there was a need to extend the method to decide how the reduction of green times should be distributed to other movements at the intersection. Considering the above, this dissertation further develops a method to derive optimized signal timing plans during non-recurrent congestion that considers the operations of the critical direction impacted by the incident, the overall corridor, as well as the critical intersection movement performance. The prerequisite of optimizing the signal plans is the accurate measurements of traffic flow conditions and turning movement counts. It is also important to calibrate any utilized simulation and optimization models to replicate the field traffic states according to field traffic conditions and local driver behaviors. This study evaluates the identified special signal-timing plan based on both the optimization and the DT and FRBS approaches. Although the DT and FRBS model outputs are able to reduce the existing queue and improve all other performance measures, the evaluation results show that the special signal timing plan obtained from the optimization method produced better performance compared to the DT and FRBS approaches for all of the evaluated non-recurrent conditions. However, there are opportunities to combine both approaches for the best selection of signal plans
