The role of supply chain integration in achieving competitive advantage: A study of UK automobile manufacturers
The competitive nature of the global automobile industry has resulted in a battle for efficiency and consistency in supply chain management (SCM). For manufacturers, the diversified network of suppliers represents more than just a production system; it is a strategic asset that must be managed, evaluated, and revised in order to attain competitive advantage. One capability that has become an increasingly essential means of alignment and assessment is supply chain integration (SCI). Through such practices, manufacturers create informational capital that is inimitable, yet transferrable, allowing suppliers to participate in a mutually-beneficial system of performance-centred outcomes. From cost reduction to time improvements to quality control, the benefits of SCI extend throughout the supply chain lifecycle, providing firms with improved predictability, flexibility, and responsiveness. Yet in spite of such benefits, key limitations including exposure to risks, supplier failures, or changing competitive conditions may expose manufacturers to a vulnerable position that can severely impact value and performance. The current study summarizes the perspectives and predictions of managers within the automobile industry in the UK, highlighting a dynamic model of interdependency and interpolation that embraces SCI as a strategic resource. Full commitment to integration is critical to achieving improved outcomes and performance; therefore, firms seeking to integrate throughout their extended supply chain must be willing to embrace a less centralized locus of control
Methodology for Designing Decision Support Systems for Visualising and Mitigating Supply Chain Cyber Risk from IoT Technologies
This paper proposes a methodology for designing decision support systems for
visualising and mitigating the Internet of Things cyber risks. Digital
technologies present new cyber risk in the supply chain which are often not
visible to companies participating in the supply chains. This study
investigates how the Internet of Things cyber risks can be visualised and
mitigated in the process of designing business and supply chain strategies. The
emerging DSS methodology present new findings on how digital technologies
affect business and supply chain systems. Through epistemological analysis, the
article derives with a decision support system for visualising supply chain
cyber risk from Internet of Things digital technologies. Such methods do not
exist at present and this represents the first attempt to devise a decision
support system that would enable practitioners to develop a step by step
process for visualising, assessing and mitigating the emerging cyber risk from
IoT technologies on shared infrastructure in legacy supply chain systems

Lean and green â a systematic review of the state of the art literature
The move towards greener operations and products has forced companies to seek alternatives to balance efficiency gains and environmental friendliness in their operations and products. The exploration of the sequential or simultaneous deployment of lean and green initiatives is the results of this balancing action. However, the lean-green topic is relatively new, and it lacks of a clear and structured research definition. Thus, this paperâs main contribution is the offering of a systematic review of the existing literature on lean and green, aimed at providing guidance on the topic, uncovering gaps and inconsistencies in the literature, and finding new paths for research. The paper identifies and structures, through a concept map, six main research streams that comprise both conceptual and empirical research conducted within the context of various organisational functions and industrial sectors. Important issues for future research are then suggested in the form of research questions. The paperâs aim is to also contribute by stimulating scholars to further study this area in depth, which will lead to a better understanding of the compatibility and impact on organisational performance of lean and green initiatives. It also holds important implications for industrialists, who can develop a deeper and richer knowledge on lean and green to help them formulate more effective strategies for their deployment

Circular business strategies and supply chain finance in the Aruba waste sector : a case study of a small island jurisdiction
This paper focuses on possibilities and obstacles for a circular economy in the waste management sector in Aruba. The authors describe the Aruban economy and the consequences of its SIDS characteristics. The article defines concepts in the field of circular economy and presents a conceptual model for research in this area. Based on multimethod research, the paper argues that small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) in the waste sector in Aruba determine their financial needs partly on the opportunities offered by the international market and price developments. Financing often takes place from own resources or via a local bank. No examples of circular chain financing were identified. Chain cooperation takes place with partners within the existing holding or with international partners, whereby performance and hedging contracts are concluded to guarantee quality and delivery and to mitigate business risks such as price fluctuations on the world market. During the research, it became obvious that limitations resulting from Arubaâs small scale and âislandnessâ â such as the limited goods flow, limited quantities of feed waste materials and financing facilities offered by the local banking sector, as well as insufficiently stimulating legislation and regulations, coupled with faltering knowledge circulation and social awareness â seriously hamper the development of circular entrepreneurism in Aruba. Contextual impacts on industrial processes brought by the digital transformation of manufacturing: a systematic review
The digital transformation of manufacturing (a phenomenon also known as "Industry 4.0" or "Smart Manufacturing") is finding a growing interest both at practitioner and academic levels, but is still in its infancy and needs deeper investigation. Even though current and potential advantages of digital manufacturing are remarkable, in terms of improved efficiency, sustainability, customization, and flexibility, only a limited number of companies has already developed ad hoc strategies necessary to achieve a superior performance. Through a systematic review, this study aims at assessing the current state of the art of the academic literature regarding the paradigm shift occurring in the manufacturing settings, in order to provide definitions as well as point out recurring patterns and gaps to be addressed by future research. For the literature search, the most representative keywords, strict criteria, and classification schemes based on authoritative reference studies were used. The final sample of 156 primary publications was analyzed through a systematic coding process to identify theoretical and methodological approaches, together with other significant elements. This analysis allowed a mapping of the literature based on clusters of critical themes to synthesize the developments of different research streams and provide the most representative picture of its current state. Research areas, insights, and gaps resulting from this analysis contributed to create a schematic research agenda, which clearly indicates the space for future evolutions of the state of knowledge in this field
Applying performance measures to support decision-making in supply chain operations: a case of beverage industry
Performance measurement systems (PMS) have commonly been applied to evaluate and reward performances at
managerial levels, especially in the context of supply chain management. However, evidence suggests that the effective
use of PMS can also positively influence the behaviour and improve performance at an operational level. The motivation
is to accomplish organisational goals, namely to increase supply chain flexibility by responding to evermore-varying customer
demands in a timely manner. The purpose of the study described in this paper was to develop a conceptual framework
that adopts performance measures for ex-ante decision-making at an operational level within the supply chain. To
guide the research, five questions were asked and subsequently key gaps have been identified. In an attempt to fill the
gaps, a case study at a major global brand beverage company has been carried out, and as a result, a conceptual framework
of the PMS has been developed. Overall, the research offers a foundation of the applicability and impact of PMS
in the supply chain and provides a framework that attends to some of the potential uses of PMS that so far have not
been practically applied. The outcomes from the testing indicate that the initial gaps identified in the literature have been
addressed and that the framework is judicious with scope for practical applicability. The framework is deemed worthy of
further testing in different operational contexts of the supply chain

Improving sustainability performance through supplier relationship management in the tobacco industry
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore how tobacco manufacturing companies can improve their sustainability performance via effective supplier relationship management (SRM).
Design/methodology/approach: This study has adopted a single case study of an international tobacco company. The primary data involved semi-structured interviews with participants from the case company who are familiar with sustainable SRM in the tobacco industry and are engaging in various techniques to improve sustainability performance.
Findings: The drivers for sustainable SRM commonly identified in literature are observable within the case company. There is also clear evidence of integrating sustainability in its SRM processes. However, the perception of sustainability as a requirement to meet stringent regulations limits its scope and drive in pursuing sustainable SRM. It has also limited supplier sustainability evaluation and performance metrics. Furthermore, the findings of this paper reinforce the importance of a procurement teamâs ability to work with other functional teams in implementing sustainable SRM. The findings also contribute to the emerging literature on the impact of sustainability on supplier segmentation and multi-tier supplier management.
Research limitations/implications: This study provides insight into the varying SRM methods used in the tobacco industry to ensure compliance and improve sustainability performance. However, further research is required to explore the generalisability of the findings of this study derived from a single case study.
Originality/value: The tobacco industry is an under-researched industry, particularly in terms of sustainable operations and supply chain management practices. The findings of this study seem to be relevant to those comparable industries with stringent regulations as well
