    Electron Dephasing in Mesoscopic Metal Wires

    The low-temperature behavior of the electron phase coherence time, τϕ\tau_{\phi}, in mesoscopic metal wires has been a subject of controversy recently. Whereas theory predicts that τϕ(T)\tau_{\phi}(T) in narrow wires should increase as T2/3T^{-2/3} as the temperature TT is lowered, many samples exhibit a saturation of τϕ\tau_{\phi} below about 1 K. We review here the experiments we have performed recently to address this issue. In particular we emphasize that in sufficiently pure Ag and Au samples we observe no saturation of τϕ\tau_{\phi} down to our base temperature of 40 mK. In addition, the measured magnitude of τϕ\tau_{\phi} is in excellent quantitative agreement with the prediction of the perturbative theory of Altshuler, Aronov and Khmelnitskii. We discuss possible explanations why saturation of τϕ\tau_{\phi} is observed in many other samples measured in our laboratory and elsewhere, and answer the criticisms raised recently by Mohanty and Webb regarding our work.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures; to appear in proceedings of conference "Fundamental Problems of Mesoscopic Physics", Granada, Spain, 6-11 September, 200

    Funding for preventative Children’s Services and rates of children becoming looked after : a natural experiment using longitudinal area-level data in England

    Background Children in care face adverse health outcomes, throughout the life-course, relative to the general population. In England, over the last decade, the rate of children entering care has increased. The rate of change differs markedly for older and younger children, who may also experience different preventative services. These services have been subject to inequitable spending reductions due to fiscal policies trailing the 2008 recession. Objective To assess the impact of cuts to prevention on rates of preschool children and adolescents entering care between 2012 and 2019. Participants and Setting Children aged 1–4 and 16–17 years, across 150 English upper-tier local authorities. Methods Our outcomes were annual rates of children entering care, aged 1–4 and 16–17. Our exposures were Children’s Services prevention spend per child under 5, and per child over 12. Regression models were used to quantify, within areas, associations between trends in prevention spend and trends in rates of children entering care, controlling for employment and child poverty rates. Results We found no association between changes in prevention spend per child under 5 and changes in care entry for 1–4-year-olds. However, spending reductions per child over 12 were associated with rising rates of 16–17-year-olds entering care. Every £10 per child decrease in prevention spend was associated with an estimated additional 1.9 per 100,000 children aged 16–17 entering care the following year (95% CI 0.7 to 2.9), equivalent to 1 in 25 care entries in this age group between 2012 and 2019. Conclusion This study offers evidence that rising rates of older children entering care has partly been driven by cuts to prevention services catering to their needs. Policies to tackle adverse trends should promote reinvestment in youth services, placing ordinary help on a robust statutory footing

    A comparative and regional study of potassium induced relaxation of vascular smooth muscle

    The current study was undertaken to assess species and regional variations in the relaxation of vascular smooth muscle in response to potassium and in the ouabain sensitivity of this relaxation. The effect of species variation was investigated through the use of tail arteries from rats, dogs, cats, monkeys, and pigs; the effect of regional variation was studied in tail, middle cerebral, femoral, and posterior coronary arteries from baboons. Helical strips from all of these vessels were made to contract with norepinephrine or serotonin in a potassium-free solution. The vessels relaxed when potassium was added back to the solution. Strips of tail artery from rats, dogs, and monkeys showed greater relaxation in response to potassium than did strips from pigs and cats. Helical strips from tail, cerebral, and coronary arteries of the baboon relaxed to a greater degree in response to potassium than did strips from the femoral artery. Ouabain produced a concentration-dependent decrease in the magnitude of potassium relaxation in all vessel types. Half-maximal inhibition occurred at approximately 10 −8 to 10 −7 M in all arterial strips except those obtained from rat tail artery (5×10 −5 M). The inhibition of potassium relaxation by ouabain was fully reversed by 30 min exposure to a ouabain-free solution in only the rat tail artery strips. A component of potassium-induced relaxation in tail artery strips from monkeys and baboons was not inhibited by ouabain. The results show that the magnitude of response, potassium and ouabain sensitivity, and recovery from ouabain treatment of potassium relaxation are species related. The regional bed from which the vascular smooth muscle is derived also determines the magnitude and potassium sensitivity of the relaxation.     Low-field MRI: a report on the 2022 ISMRM workshop

    In March 2022, the first ISMRM Workshop on Low-Field MRI was held virtually. The goals of this workshop were to discuss recent low field MRI technology including hardware and software developments, novel methodology, new contrast mechanisms, as well as the clinical translation and dissemination of these systems. The virtual Workshop was attended by 368 registrants from 24 countries, and included 34 invited talks, 100 abstract presentations, 2 panel discussions, and 2 live scanner demonstrations. Here, we report on the scientific content of the Workshop and identify the key themes that emerged. The subject matter of the Workshop reflected the ongoing developments of low-field MRI as an accessible imaging modality that may expand the usage of MRI through cost reduction, portability, and ease of installation. Many talks in this Workshop addressed the use of computational power, efficient acquisitions, and contemporary hardware to overcome the SNR limitations associated with low field strength. Participants discussed the selection of appropriate clinical applications that leverage the unique capabilities of low-field MRI within traditional radiology practices, other point-of-care settings, and the broader community. The notion of "image quality" versus "information content" was also discussed, as images from low-field portable systems that are purpose-built for clinical decision-making may not replicate the current standard of clinical imaging. Speakers also described technical challenges and infrastructure challenges related to portability and widespread dissemination, and speculated about future directions for the field to improve the technology and establish clinical value.Radiolog

    The energy dependence of ptp_t angular correlations inferred from mean-ptp_{t} fluctuation scale dependence in heavy ion collisions at the SPS and RHIC

    We present the first study of the energy dependence of ptp_t angular correlations inferred from event-wise mean transverse momentum fluctuations in heavy ion collisions. We compare our large-acceptance measurements at CM energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =$ 19.6, 62.4, 130 and 200 GeV to SPS measurements at 12.3 and 17.3 GeV. $p_t$ angular correlation structure suggests that the principal source of $p_t$ correlations and fluctuations is minijets (minimum-bias parton fragments). We observe a dramatic increase in correlations and fluctuations from SPS to RHIC energies, increasing linearly with $\ln \sqrt{s_{NN}}$ from the onset of observable jet-related fluctuations near 10 GeV.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Pion, kaon, proton and anti-proton transverse momentum distributions from p+p and d+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

    Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of π±\pi^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm}, and p(pˉ)p(\bar{p}) from 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (RdAuR_{dAu}) between protons (p+pˉ)(p+\bar{p}) and charged hadrons (hh) in the transverse momentum range 1.2<pT<3.01.2<{p_{T}}<3.0 GeV/c is measured to be 1.19±0.051.19\pm0.05(stat)±0.03\pm0.03(syst) in minimum-bias collisions and shows little centrality dependence. The yield ratio of (p+pˉ)/h(p+\bar{p})/h in minimum-bias d+Au collisions is found to be a factor of 2 lower than that in Au+Au collisions, indicating that the Cronin effect alone is not enough to account for the relative baryon enhancement observed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table.     Experimental and Theoretical Challenges in the Search for the Quark Gluon Plasma: The STAR Collaboration's Critical Assessment of the Evidence from RHIC Collisions

    We review the most important experimental results from the first three years of nucleus-nucleus collision studies at RHIC, with emphasis on results from the STAR experiment, and we assess their interpretation and comparison to theory. The theory-experiment comparison suggests that central Au+Au collisions at RHIC produce dense, rapidly thermalizing matter characterized by: (1) initial energy densities above the critical values predicted by lattice QCD for establishment of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP); (2) nearly ideal fluid flow, marked by constituent interactions of very short mean free path, established most probably at a stage preceding hadron formation; and (3) opacity to jets. Many of the observations are consistent with models incorporating QGP formation in the early collision stages, and have not found ready explanation in a hadronic framework. However, the measurements themselves do not yet establish unequivocal evidence for a transition to this new form of matter. The theoretical treatment of the collision evolution, despite impressive successes, invokes a suite of distinct models, degrees of freedom and assumptions of as yet unknown quantitative consequence. We pose a set of important open questions, and suggest additional measurements, at least some of which should be addressed in order to establish a compelling basis to conclude definitively that thermalized, deconfined quark-gluon matter has been produced at RHIC.Comment: 101 pages, 37 figures; revised version to Nucl.     Quantification of myocardial creatine and triglyceride content in the human heart: precision and accuracy of in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy

    Background Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-1-MRS) of the human heart is deemed to be a quantitative method to investigate myocardial metabolite content, but thorough validations of in vivo measurements against invasive techniques are lacking.Purpose To determine measurement precision and accuracy for quantifications of myocardial total creatine and triglyceride content with localized H-1-MRS.Study type Test-retest repeatability and measurement validation study.Subjects Sixteen volunteers and 22 patients scheduled for open-heart aortic valve replacement or septal myectomy.Field Strength/Sequence Prospectively ECG-triggered respiratory-gated free-breathing single-voxel point-resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) sequence at 3 T.Assessment Myocardial total creatine and triglyceride content were quantified relative to the total water content by fitting the H-1-MR spectra. Precision was assessed with measurement repeatability. Accuracy was assessed by validating in vivo H-1-MRS measurements against biochemical assays in myocardial tissue from the same subjects.Statistical Tests Intrasession and intersession repeatability was assessed using Bland-Altman analyses. Agreement between H-1-MRS measurements and biochemical assay was tested with regression analyses.Results The intersession repeatability coefficient for myocardial total creatine content was 41.8% with a mean value of 0.083% +/- 0.020% of the total water signal, and 36.7% for myocardial triglyceride content with a mean value of 0.35% +/- 0.13% of the total water signal. Ex vivo myocardial total creatine concentrations in tissue samples correlated with the in vivo myocardial total creatine content measured with H-1-MRS: n = 22, r = 0.44; P < 0.05. Likewise, ex vivo myocardial triglyceride concentrations correlated with the in vivo myocardial triglyceride content: n = 20, r = 0.50; P < 0.05.Data Conclusion We validated the use of localized H-1-MRS of the human heart at 3 T for quantitative assessments of in vivo myocardial tissue metabolite content by estimating the measurement precision and accuracy.Level of Evidence 2Technical Efficacy Stage 2Cardiovascular Aspects of Radiolog
