Empirical treatment of adults with hospital-acquired pneumonia: lights and shadows of the 2016 Clinical Practice ATS/IDSA Guidelines

    Get PDF
Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is a common cause of nosocomial infection associated with significant morbidity and mortality. New clinical practice guidelines for the management of adults with hospital-acquired pneumonia have been published in 2016 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS). This review focuses on the recent recommendations and their limitations. We also focus on new therapeutic options that might improve the treatment and outcomes of these patients

Nuclear effects in F_3 structure function of nucleon

We study nuclear effects in the F3A(x)F^A_3(x) structure function in the deep inelastic neutrino reactions on iron by using a relativistic framework to describe the nucleon spectral functions in the nucleus. The results for the ratio R(x,Q2)=F3A(x,Q2)AF3N(x,Q2)R(x,Q^2)=\frac{F^A_3(x,Q^2)}{AF^N_3(x, Q^2)} and the Gross-Llewellyn Smith(GLS) integral G(x,Q2)=x1dxF3A(x,Q2)G(x,Q^2)=\int_x^1 dx F^A_3(x,Q^2) in nuclei are discussed and compared with the recent results available in literature from theoretical and phenomenological analyses of experimental data.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

Practical computational toolkits for dendrimers and dendrons structure design

    Get PDF
Dendrimers and dendrons offer an excellent platform for developing novel drug delivery systems and medicines. The rational design and further development of these repetitively branched systems are restricted by difficulties in scalable synthesis and structural determination, which can be overcome by judicious use of molecular modelling and molecular simulations. A major difficulty to utilise in silico studies to design dendrimers lies in the laborious generation of their structures. Current modelling tools utilise automated assembly of simpler dendrimers or the inefficient manual assembly of monomer precursors to generate more complicated dendrimer structures. Herein we describe two novel graphical user interface (GUI) toolkits written in Python that provide an improved degree of automation for rapid assembly of dendrimers and generation of their 2D and 3D structures. Our first toolkit uses the RDkit library, SMILES nomenclature of monomers and SMARTS reaction nomenclature to generate SMILES and mol files of dendrimers without 3D coordinates. These files are used for simple graphical representations and storing their structures in databases. The second toolkit assembles complex topology dendrimers from monomers to construct 3D dendrimer structures to be used as starting points for simulation using existing and widely available software and force fields. Both tools were validated for ease-of-use to prototype dendrimer structure and the second toolkit was especially relevant for dendrimers of high complexity and size.Peer reviewe

Dendritic glycopolymers based on dendritic polyamine scaffolds: view on their synthetic approaches, characteristics and potential for biomedical applications

    Get PDF
In this review we highlight the potential for biomedical applications of dendritic glycopolymers based on polyamine scaffolds. The complex interplay of the molecular characteristics of the dendritic architectures and their specific interactions with various (bio)molecules are elucidated with various examples. A special role of the individual sugar units attached to the dendritic scaffolds and their density is identified, which govern ionic and H-bond interactions, and biological targeting, but to a large extent are also responsible for the significantly reduced toxicity of the dendritic glycopolymers compared to their polyamine scaffolds. Thus, the application of dendritic glycopolymers in drug delivery systems for gene transfection but also as therapeutics in neurodegenerative diseases has great promisePublikacja w ramach programu Royal Society of Chemistry "Gold for Gold" 2014 finansowanego przez Uniwersytet Łódzk
