Intraligand Charge Transfer Enables VisibleâLightâMediated NickelâCatalyzed CrossâCoupling Reactions
We demonstrate that several visibleâlightâmediated carbonâheteroatom crossâcoupling reactions can be carried out using a photoactive NiII precatalyst that forms in situ from a nickel salt and a bipyridine ligand decorated with two carbazole groups (Ni(Czbpy)Cl2). The activation of this precatalyst towards crossâcoupling reactions follows a hitherto undisclosed mechanism that is different from previously reported lightâresponsive nickel complexes that undergo metalâtoâligand charge transfer. Theoretical and spectroscopic investigations revealed that irradiation of Ni(Czbpy)Cl2 with visible light causes an initial intraligand charge transfer event that triggers productive catalysis. Ligand polymerization affords a porous, recyclable organic polymer for heterogeneous nickel catalysis of crossâcoupling reactions. The heterogeneous catalyst shows stable performance in a packedâbed flow reactor during a week of continuous operation
Which Anesthesia Regimen Is Best to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality in Lung Surgery? A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.
BACKGROUND
One-lung ventilation during thoracic surgery is associated with hypoxia-reoxygenation injury in the deflated and subsequently reventilated lung. Numerous studies have reported volatile anesthesia-induced attenuation of inflammatory responses in such scenarios. If the effect also extends to clinical outcome is yet undetermined. We hypothesized that volatile anesthesia is superior to intravenous anesthesia regarding postoperative complications.
METHODS
Five centers in Switzerland participated in the randomized controlled trial. Patients scheduled for lung surgery with one-lung ventilation were randomly assigned to one of two parallel arms to receive either propofol or desflurane as general anesthetic. Patients and surgeons were blinded to group allocation. Time to occurrence of the first major complication according to the Clavien-Dindo score was defined as primary (during hospitalization) or secondary (6-month follow-up) endpoint. Cox regression models were used with adjustment for prestratification variables and age.
RESULTS
Of 767 screened patients, 460 were randomized and analyzed (n = 230 for each arm). Demographics, disease and intraoperative characteristics were comparable in both groups. Incidence of major complications during hospitalization was 16.5% in the propofol and 13.0% in the desflurane groups (hazard ratio for desflurane vs. propofol, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.46 to 1.22; P = 0.24). Incidence of major complications within 6 months from surgery was 40.4% in the propofol and 39.6% in the desflurane groups (hazard ratio for desflurane vs. propofol, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.71 to 1.28; P = 0.71).
CONCLUSIONS
This is the first multicenter randomized controlled trial addressing the effect of volatile versus intravenous anesthetics on major complications after lung surgery. No difference between the two anesthesia regimens was evident

Safety and Tolerability of SRX246, a Vasopressin 1a Antagonist, in Irritable Huntington\u27s Disease Patients-A Randomized Phase 2 Clinical Trial.
SRX246 is a vasopressin (AVP) 1a receptor antagonist that crosses the blood-brain barrier. It reduced impulsive aggression, fear, depression and anxiety in animal models, blocked the actions of intranasal AVP on aggression/fear circuits in an experimental medicine fMRI study and demonstrated excellent safety in Phase 1 multiple-ascending dose clinical trials. The present study was a 3-arm, multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, 12-week, dose escalation study of SRX246 in early symptomatic Huntington\u27s disease (HD) patients with irritability. Our goal was to determine whether SRX246 was safe and well tolerated in these HD patients given its potential use for the treatment of problematic neuropsychiatric symptoms. Participants were randomized to receive placebo or to escalate to 120 mg twice daily or 160 mg twice daily doses of SRX246. Assessments included standard safety tests, the Unified Huntington\u27s Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS), and exploratory measures of problem behaviors. The groups had comparable demographics, features of HD and baseline irritability. Eighty-two out of 106 subjects randomized completed the trial on their assigned dose of drug. One-sided exact-method confidence interval tests were used to reject the null hypothesis of inferior tolerability or safety for each dose group vs. placebo. Apathy and suicidality were not affected by SRX246. Most adverse events in the active arms were considered unlikely to be related to SRX246. The compound was safe and well tolerated in HD patients and can be moved forward as a candidate to treat irritability and aggression
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of coenzyme Q10 in Huntington disease
Objective: To test the hypothesis that chronic treatment of early-stage Huntington disease (HD) with high-dose coenzyme Q10 (CoQ) will slow the progressive functional decline of HD.
Methods: We performed a multicenter randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Patients with early-stage HD (n = 609) were enrolled at 48 sites in the United States, Canada, and Australia from 2008 to 2012. Patients were randomized to receive either CoQ 2,400 mg/d or matching placebo, then followed for 60 months. The primary outcome variable was the change from baseline to month 60 in Total Functional Capacity score (for patients who survived) combined with time to death (for patients who died) analyzed using a joint-rank analysis approach.
Results: An interim analysis for futility revealed a conditional power of <5% for the primary analysis, prompting premature conclusion in July 2014. No statistically significant differences were seen between treatment groups for the primary or secondary outcome measures. CoQ was generally safe and well-tolerated throughout the study.
Conclusions: These data do not justify use of CoQ as a treatment to slow functional decline in HD
The 2MASS Redshift Survey - Description and Data Release
We present the results of the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS), a ten-year
project to map the full three-dimensional distribution of galaxies in the
nearby Universe. The 2 Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) was completed in 2003 and
its final data products, including an extended source catalog (XSC), are
available on-line. The 2MASS XSC contains nearly a million galaxies with Ks <=
13.5 mag and is essentially complete and mostly unaffected by interstellar
extinction and stellar confusion down to a galactic latitude of |b|=5 deg for
bright galaxies. Near-infrared wavelengths are sensitive to the old stellar
populations that dominate galaxy masses, making 2MASS an excellent starting
point to study the distribution of matter in the nearby Universe.
We selected a sample of 44,599 2MASS galaxies with Ks =5
deg (>= 8 deg towards the Galactic bulge) as the input catalog for our survey.
We obtained spectroscopic observations for 11,000 galaxies and used
previously-obtained velocities for the remainder of the sample to generate a
redshift catalog that is 97.6% complete to well-defined limits and covers 91%
of the sky. This provides an unprecedented census of galaxy (baryonic mass)
concentrations within 300 Mpc.
Earlier versions of our survey have been used in a number of publications
that have studied the bulk motion of the Local Group, mapped the density and
peculiar velocity fields out to 50 Mpc, detected galaxy groups, and estimated
the values of several cosmological parameters.
Additionally, we present morphological types for a nearly-complete sub-sample
of 20,860 galaxies with Ks = 10 deg.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement

MS vs. HD: Can white matter and subcortical gray matter pathology be distinguished neuropsychologically?
This study was conducted to examine the neuropsychological effects of white matter and subcortical gray matter pathology. Nineteen patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), 16 with Huntington\u27s disease (HD), and 17 normal controls (NC) participated. Participants completed the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT), Rotary Pursuit (RP) and Mirror Tracing (MT) tasks, and the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT). The principal findings pertain to a dissociation in procedural memory: on RP, the HD group demonstrated impaired sequence learning compared to the MS group, which performed similarly to the NC group, yet on MT, the MS and HD groups demonstrated normal perceptual-motor integration learning. On the CVLT, both patient groups performed better on recognition than on recall. On the SDMT, both patient groups performed worse than the NC group, with the HD group performing more poorly than the MS and NC groups. These results suggest that involvement of white and subcortical gray matter may produce different neuropsychological effects. Š 2006 Psychology Press
Scoliosis in Friedreich's ataxia: longitudinal characterization in a large heterogeneous cohort
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to characterize the incidence and progression of scoliosis in the natural history of Friedreichâs ataxia (FRDA) and document the factors leading to the requirement for corrective surgery. METHODS: Data on the prevalence of scoliosis and scoliosis surgery from up to 17Â years of followâup collected during a large natural history study in FRDA (1116 patients at 4928 visits) were summarized descriptively and subjected to time to event analyses. RESULTS: Well over 90% of early or typical FRDA patients (as determined by age of onset) developed intermediate to severe scoliosis, while patients with a later onset (>14Â years) had no or much lower prevalence of scoliosis. Diagnosis of scoliosis occurs during the onset of ataxia and in rare cases even prior to that. Major progression follows throughout the growth phase and puberty, leading to the need for surgical intervention in more than 50% of individuals in the most severe subgroup. The youngest patients appear to delay surgery until the end of the growth period, leading to further progression before surgical intervention. Age of onset of FRDA before or after reaching 15Â years sharply separated severe and relatively mild incidence and progression of scoliosis. INTERPRETATION: Scoliosis is an important comorbidity of FRDA. Our comprehensive documentation of scoliosis progression in this natural history study provides a baseline for comparison as novel treatments become available
