    Evolutionary Graph Compression and Diffusion Methods for City Discovery in Role Playing Games

    Cities, while exciting in their visualization and permitting several layouts, do not take into account the placement of crucial characters which might be part of the narrative. Narrative graphs, a connected graph of all potential and existing relations within a game, can enable an ability to find a Nonplayer Character (NPC) who is likely to live nearby, under the assumption that those who interact most frequently are also close in distance. We examine the use of an evolutionary graph compression method and a method using simulated diffusion to cluster features based on relational information about players to generate relationally intimate groups. This clustering can be used to generate information about the game world and cities to inform PCG as to how the connectivity of these areas is, and should be, arranged.     Compression of Biological Networks using a Genetic Algorithm with Localized Merge

    Network graphs appear in a number of important biological data problems, recording information relating to protein-protein interactions, gene regulation, transcription regulation and much more. These graphs are of such a significant size that they are impossible for a human to understand. Furthermore, the ever-expanding quantity of such information means that there are storage issues. To help address these issues, it is common for applications to compress nodes to form supernodes of similarly connected components. In previous graph compression studies it was noted that such supernodes often contain points from disparate parts of the graph. This study aims to correct this flaw by only allowing merges to occur within a local neighbourhood rather than across the entire graph. This restriction was found to not only produce more meaningful compressions, but also to reduce the overall distortion created by the compression for two out of three biological networks studied

    Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

    Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science.     The effects of the adoption of blockchain technology on selected ASEAN banks’ stock performance: An event study

    The study aims to determine the impact of the announcement of blockchain technology use on select ASEAN banks stock price. As the financial technology industry takes its innovative step forward decentralizing many traditional financial services, public sentiment has yet to be decided on how this will affect the existing industries moving forward. This study takes into account the efficient market hypothesis and its forms as well as how it applies to the ASEAN markets. Market efficiency levels differ from country to country and the study seeks to discover how far the limits of the announcement effect can contribute to volatility of stock prices and whether or not blockchain technology is seen by market sentiment as a significant provider of value to shareholders. Tying together the degree of market efficiency, the announcement effect, and its connection to the implementation of blockchain technology, the research sample is limited only to the ASEAN region and the finite amount of publicly traded banks which have adopted blockchain technology

    Fully Depleted MAPS in 110-nm CMOS Process With 100-300-\u3bcm Active Substrate

    This article presents a fully depleted monolithic active pixel sensor technology compatible with a standard deep submicrometer 110-nm CMOS process. Passive test pixels structures, produced in various flavors, have proved the feasibility of 100- and 300- mu ext{m} -thick active substrates. Active pixel sensors with monolithically integrated analog and digital electronics, consisting of a 24 imes 24 array of pixels with 50- mu ext{m} pitch, have been shown to be fully functional when operating in the full depletion mode. Characterization results obtained with a proton microbeam and a 55Fe radiation source are presented and discussed

    Activity and safety of sunitinib in poor risk metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients

    Purpose To assess the activity, safety and treatment patterns of sunitinib in patients with poor-risk metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed the charts of poor risk patients treated with sunitinib from October 2006 to July 2013 who met the eligibility criteria. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). Tumor radiological response was measured according to RECIST 1.1 and adverse events (AEs) were assessed through standard criteria. Results Median OS was 8.16 months (95% CI, 5.73-10.59). Of the 53 patients included in this analysis, 9 (17.0%) achieved partial response, 12 (22.6%) had stable disease. Median treatment duration was 3.30 months (95% CI: 1.96-4.63) and 26.4% of patients discontinued treatment due to toxicity. Grade 3 or higher AEs occurred in 39.6% of patients, the most common being fatigue (15.1%), neutropenia (9.5%), nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (7.5% each). Discussion Sunitinib may benefit some unselected poor-risk patients, although the rates of AEs and drug discontinuation suggest a need for careful patient monitoring
