"Production and reproduction in a society, their labour and social order as well as overall social arrangements in the family and employment are based on a more or less explicitly formulated 'social contract'. The particular social contract generally has two components: a 'gender contract' and an 'employment contract'. In the Federal Republic of Germany the gender contract and the employment contract are usually characterised by two catchphrases: 'male breadwinner' or 'breadwinner/housewife marriage' and 'regular employment relationship'. Both constructs involve the fact that the regular employment relationship for women, especially for mothers, should not be valid. This article looks into the question as to the extent to which these social constructs still correspond to the reality on the labour markets and in families, whether changes in patterns, such as the breadwinner marriage with additional income earned by wives who work in employment relationships outside the regular employment relationship, will develop stably as new arrangements. In addition the consequences of the restricted integration of women into the employment system are illustrated from marginal employment, which has expanded greatly and, like part-time work in general, has 'modernised' the traditional gender relationship. At the end of the article it is pointed out that the fact that women appear to be the ideal workers for flexible and deregulated employment relationships does not mean that the new employment relationships could promote egalitarian gender contracts. No redefinition of the regular employment relationship which shows solidarity for both genders arises from a possible erosion of the regular employment relationship for men - what is necessary is a conscious rearrangement of the relationships in occupation and family towards dual earner/dual breadwinner with egalitarian distribution of gainful employment and work in the home." Homo Oeconomicus: Zur geschlechtsspezifischen Konstruktion der Wirtschaftswissenschaften

The article deals with the beginnig feminist debate on the gender-specific construction of economic theory. Economics and the development of economic theory are androcentric biased - this thesis is developed by analysing the dominant, i.e. neoclassical, economic theory. The main categories constituting economic thinking like »efficiancy«, »rationality«, »maximizing behaviour«, and »division of labour« are discussed from the point of gender-relation in market economies. The ongoing debate among feminist economists and the main lines of an emerging critique are summarized. lt comes to the conclusion that a feminist economic theory is far from being fully developed or recognized within the scientific community. but that there is a growing need to organize the discussion

Patients with cancer might be particularly prone to stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of pandemic-related stressors on oncological patients’ psychological well-being. During the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany 122 cancer out-patients of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Munich reported on COVID-19-related stressors (information satisfaction, threat perception, and fear of disease deterioration) and answered standardized questionnaires for psychosocial distress (DT) as well as depression and anxiety symptoms (PHQ-2, GAD-2). Multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify associations of the COVID-19-related stressors with psychological symptoms, controlling for sociodemographic, psychological (self-efficacy, ASKU) and clinical (somatic symptom burden, SSS-8) variables. Initially, satisfaction with information was significantly negatively associated with all three outcome variables. Fear of disease deterioration was associated with distress and depressive symptoms. After controlling for additional variables, only satisfaction with information remained an independent determinant of anxiety (β = −0.35, p < 0.001). All three outcomes were most strongly determined by somatic symptom burden (β ≥ 0.40, p < 0.001). The results of this study tentatively suggest that physical well-being overrides the relevance of some COVID-19-related stressors for oncological patients’ psychological wellbeing. Physical symptoms are strongly tied to personal wellbeing as they are associated with suffering from cancer, which might be more central to personal wellbeing than the possibility of getting infected with SARS-CoV-2. However, satisfaction with the information received seems to be important beyond physical wellbeing, as this emerged as an independent determinant of anxiety

Thermally stable bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide salts and their mixtures

We show that both tetraphenylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([PPh4][NTf2]) and Cs[NTf2] are low melting salts of exceptionally high and also very similar thermal stability. This similarity indicates that the thermal stability is dominated by the anion. Moreover, eutectic mixtures of [PPh4][NTf2] and Cs[NTf2] with melting points below 100 °C are presented. Surface analysis of the latter in the liquid state reveals a surprising depletion of [PPh4]+ ions from the surface

Compulsory Military Service in Germany Revisited

This paper estimates the causal impact of compulsory military service on men in Germany using social security and pension administrative data for the cohort of individuals born in the period 1932-1942. Due to the combination of laws restricting conscription only to men born on or after July 1, 1937, difference-in-differences estimates of the effect of conscription on average daily wages can be computed using cohorts of women as a comparison group. The results indicate that conscription had no significant impact on a draftee's labor-market performance, validating an earlier result using an alternative identification strategy.

Agroforestry : an appropriate and sustainable response to a changing climate in Southern Africa? Sustainability 12(17):6796, doi:10.3390/su12176796.The original publication is available at: https://www.mdpi.comENGLISH ABSTRACT: Agroforestry is often discussed as a strategy that can be used both for the adaptation to and the mitigation of climate change e ects. The climate of southern Africa is predicted to be severely a ected by such changes. With agriculture noted as the continent’s largest economic sector, issues such as food security and land degradation are in the forefront. In the light of such concerns we review the current literature to investigate if agroforestry systems (AFS) are a suitable response to the challenges besetting traditional agricultural caused by a changing climate. The benefits bestowed by AFS are multiple, o ering ecosystem services, influence over crop production and positive impacts on rural livelihoods through provisioning and income generation. Nevertheless, knowledge gaps remain. We identify outstanding questions requiring further investigation such as the interplay between trees and crops and their combination, with a discussion of potential benefits. Furthermore, we identify deficiencies in the institutional and policy frameworks that underlie the adoption and stimulus of AFS in the southern African region. We uphold the concept that AFS remains an appropriate and sustainable response for an increased resilience against a changing climate in southern Africa for the benefit of livelihoods and multiple environmental values.Publisher's versio

Spatial Scales of Bacterial Diversity in Cold-Water Coral Reef Ecosystems

Background: Cold-water coral reef ecosystems are recognized as biodiversity hotspots in the deep sea, but insights into their associated bacterial communities are still limited. Deciphering principle patterns of bacterial community variation over multiple spatial scales may however prove critical for a better understanding of factors contributing to cold-water coral reef stability and functioning. Methodology/Principal Findings: Bacterial community structure, as determined by Automated Ribosomal Intergenic Spacer Analysis (ARISA), was investigated with respect to (i) microbial habitat type and (ii) coral species and color, as well as the three spatial components (iii) geomorphologic reef zoning, (iv) reef boundary, and (v) reef location. Communities revealed fundamental differences between coral-generated (branch surface, mucus) and ambient microbial habitats (seawater, sediments). This habitat specificity appeared pivotal for determining bacterial community shifts over all other study levels investigated. Coral-derived surfaces showed species-specific patterns, differing significantly between Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata, but not between L. pertusa color types. Within the reef center, no community distinction corresponded to geomorphologic reef zoning for both coral-generated and ambient microbial habitats. Beyond the reef center, however, bacterial communities varied considerably from local to regional scales, with marked shifts toward the reef periphery as well as between different in- and offshore reef sites, suggesting significant biogeographic imprinting but wea

Drug-target identification in COVID-19 disease mechanisms using computational systems biology approaches

Introduction: The COVID-19 Disease Map project is a large-scale community effort uniting 277 scientists from 130 Institutions around the globe. We use high-quality, mechanistic content describing SARS-CoV-2-host interactions and develop interoperable bioinformatic pipelines for novel target identification and drug repurposing. Methods: Extensive community work allowed an impressive step forward in building interfaces between Systems Biology tools and platforms. Our framework can link biomolecules from omics data analysis and computational modelling to dysregulated pathways in a cell-, tissue- or patient-specific manner. Drug repurposing using text mining and AI-assisted analysis identified potential drugs, chemicals and microRNAs that could target the identified key factors. Results: Results revealed drugs already tested for anti-COVID-19 efficacy, providing a mechanistic context for their mode of action, and drugs already in clinical trials for treating other diseases, never tested against COVID-19. Discussion: The key advance is that the proposed framework is versatile and expandable, offering a significant upgrade in the arsenal for virus-host interactions and other complex pathologies.Peer Reviewe
