Low background scintillation setup to investigate radiopurity of materials
Background of 2.128 kg CdWO₄ scintillation detector was reduced by 3 orders of magnitude in the energy region 0.5…2.6 MeV, and one order of magnitude above 3 MeV in the low background scintillation setup located in the basement floor of a laboratory building at the Institute for Nuclear Research (Kyiv, Ukraine). It was achieved by application of radiopure passive shield, plastic scintillators to veto cosmic rays, and pulse-shape discrimination to reject fast Cherenkov signals in the quartz light-guide of the detector. Sensitivity of the setup to radioactive contamination of different materials were estimated. For instance, for a 3.36 kg titanium sample over 30 days of measurements detection limits are on the level of 2.9 mBq/kg (⁴⁰K); 0.6 mBq/kg (¹³⁷Cs); 2 mBq/kg (²²⁶Ra), and 0.5 mBq/kg (²²⁸Th).

Pulse-shape discrimination with PbWO crystal scintillators
The light output, ratio, and pulse shape have been
investigated at C with PbWO crystal scintillators undoped, and
doped by F, Eu, Mo, Gd and S. The fast s and middle s components of scintillation decay were observed for all the samples. Slow
components of scintillation signal with the decay times s and s with the total intensity up to have been recognized for
several samples doped by Molybdenum. We found some indications of a pulse-shape
discrimination between particles and quanta with PbWO (Mo
doped) crystal scintillators.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to NIM
Search for double beta decay of Zinc and Tungsten with the help of low-background ZnWO4 crystal scintillators
Double beta processes in 64-Zn, 70-Zn, 180-W, and 186-W have been searched
for with the help of large volume (0.1-0.7 kg) low background ZnWO4 crystal
scintillators at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN. Total time
of measurements exceeds 10 thousands hours. New improved half-life limits on
double electron capture and electron capture with positron emission in 64-Zn
have been set, in particular (all the limits are at 90% C.L.): T1/2(0nu2EC)>
1.1e20 yr, T1/2(2nuECbeta+)>7.0e20 yr, and T1/2(0nuECbeta+)>4.3e20 yr. The
different modes of double beta processes in 70-Zn, 180-W, and 186-W have been
restricted at the level of 1e17-1e20 yr.Comment: 20 p., submitted to Phys. Rev.

Observation of Geo-Neutrinos
Geo-neutrinos, electron anti-neutrinos produced in beta decays of naturally
occurring radioactive isotopes in the Earth, are a unique direct probe of our
planet's interior. We report the first observation at more than 3 C.L.
of geo-neutrinos, performed with the Borexino detector at Laboratori Nazionali
del Gran Sasso. Anti-neutrinos are detected through the neutron inverse beta
decay reaction. With a 252.6 ton-yr fiducial exposure after all selection cuts,
we detected 9.9^{+4.1}_{-3.4}(^{+14.6}_{-8.2}) geo-neutrino events, with errors
corresponding to a 68.3%(99.73%) C.L. From the profile, the
statistical significance of the Borexino geo-neutrino observation corresponds
to a 99.997% C.L. Our measurement of the geo-neutrinos rate is
3.9^{+1.6}_{-1.3}(^{+5.8}_{-3.2}) events/(100ton-yr). This measurement rejects
the hypothesis of an active geo-reactor in the Earth's core with a power above
3 TW at 95% C.L. The observed prompt positron spectrum above 2.6 MeV is
compatible with that expected from european nuclear reactors (mean base line of
approximately 1000 km). Our measurement of reactor anti-neutrinos excludes the
non-oscillation hypothesis at 99.60% C.L.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 table
Scintillating bolometers based on ZnMoO4 and Zn100MoO4 crystals to search for 0ν2β decay of 100Mo (LUMINEU project): first tests at the Modane Underground Laboratory
The technology of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystals is under development within the LUMINEU project to search for decay of 100Mo with the goal to set the basis for large scale experiments capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Advanced ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators with mass of ∼0.3 kg were developed and Zn100MoO4 crystal from enriched 100Mo was produced for the first time by using the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. One ZnMoO4 scintillator and two samples (59 g and 63 g) cut from the enriched boule were tested aboveground at milli-Kelvin temperature as scintillating bolometers showing a high detection performance. The first results of the low background measurements with three ZnMoO4 and two enriched detectors installed in the EDELWEISS set-up at the Modane Underground Laboratory (France) are presented
Low Background CdWO Scintillation Detector
International audienceLow background scintillation setup has been developed that exhibits 3 orders of magnitude lower counting rate of a large volume (2.1 kg) CdWO4 detector in the energy region 0.5–2.6 MeV, and one order of magnitude above 3 MeV. The background reduction was achieved by application of radiopure passive shield, active plasticscintillation muon veto placed above the setup and pulse-shape discrimination. Construction of additional plastic scintillation counters is in progress to reduce the residual cosmic muons background. The setup can be applied to develop radiopure scintillators, measure radioactive contamination of materials, carry out small scale low counting experiments
