    Characterisation of gas-atomised metal powders used in binder jet 3D printing

    A comprehensive characterisation study has been undertaken to examine the flowability and spreadability of two distinct types of gas-atomised metal powders used in Binder Jet 3D printing technology. The experimental characterisation encompasses an analysis of the physical properties of individual particles as well as the flow behaviour of bulk powder. The data gathered from individual particle analysis are subsequently employed in numerical simulations of roller spreading by Discrete Element Method (DEM) to gain valuable insights into the intricate interplay between powder attributes and its spreading characteristics. The findings reveal that employing bulk characterisation tests, such as shear cell tests and compressibility indices, results in contradictory outcomes. Moreover, the spreadability data derived from the DEM simulations do not exhibit a strong correlation with the results obtained from the characterisation of the bulk powder. These results underscore that the flowability of the powder may not necessarily serve as an accurate measure of its spreadability when applied in thin layers for additive manufacturing. This study further establishes a crucial connection between the intrinsic properties of individual particles and the collective behaviour of particles within the bulk material

    Breakage Assessment of Lath-Like Crystals in a Novel Laboratory-Scale Agitated Filter Bed Dryer

    Agitated filter bed dryer is often the equipment of choice in the pharmaceutical industry for the isolation of potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) from the mother liquor and subsequent drying through intermittent agitation. The use of an impeller to promote homogeneous drying could lead to undesirable size reduction of the crystal product due to shear deformation induced by the impeller blades during agitation, potentially causing off-specification product and further downstream processing issues. An evaluation of the breakage propensity of crystals during the initial development stage is therefore critical. A new versatile scale-down agitated filter bed dryer (AFBD) has been developed for this purpose. Carbamazepine dihydrate crystals that are prone to breakage have been used as model particles. The extent of particle breakage as a function of impeller rotational speed, size of clearance between the impeller and containing walls and base, and solvent content has been evaluated. A transition of breakage behaviour is observed, where carbamazepine dihydrate crystals undergo fragmentation first along the crystallographic plane [00l]. As the crystals become smaller and more equant, the breakage pattern switches to chipping. Unbound solvent content has a strong influence on the breakage, as particles break more readily at high solvent contents. The laboratory-scale instrument developed here provides a tool for comparative assessment of the propensity of particle attrition under agitated filter bed drying conditions

    Can we avoid high coupling?

    It is considered good software design practice to organize source code into modules and to favour within-module connections (cohesion) over between-module connections (coupling), leading to the oft-repeated maxim "low coupling/high cohesion". Prior research into network theory and its application to software systems has found evidence that many important properties in real software systems exhibit approximately scale-free structure, including coupling; researchers have claimed that such scale-free structures are ubiquitous. This implies that high coupling must be unavoidable, statistically speaking, apparently contradicting standard ideas about software structure. We present a model that leads to the simple predictions that approximately scale-free structures ought to arise both for between-module connectivity and overall connectivity, and not as the result of poor design or optimization shortcuts. These predictions are borne out by our large-scale empirical study. Hence we conclude that high coupling is not avoidable--and that this is in fact quite reasonable

    Search for jet extinction in the inclusive jet-pT spectrum from proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV

Further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the published articles title, journal citation, and DOI.The first search at the LHC for the extinction of QCD jet production is presented, using data collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.7  fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The extinction model studied in this analysis is motivated by the search for signatures of strong gravity at the TeV scale (terascale gravity) and assumes the existence of string couplings in the strong-coupling limit. In this limit, the string model predicts the suppression of all high-transverse-momentum standard model processes, including jet production, beyond a certain energy scale. To test this prediction, the measured transverse-momentum spectrum is compared to the theoretical prediction of the standard model. No significant deficit of events is found at high transverse momentum. A 95% confidence level lower limit of 3.3 TeV is set on the extinction mass scale

    Searches for electroweak neutralino and chargino production in channels with Higgs, Z, and W bosons in pp collisions at 8 TeV

    Searches for supersymmetry (SUSY) are presented based on the electroweak pair production of neutralinos and charginos, leading to decay channels with Higgs, Z, and W bosons and undetected lightest SUSY particles (LSPs). The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 19.5 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV collected in 2012 with the CMS detector at the LHC. The main emphasis is neutralino pair production in which each neutralino decays either to a Higgs boson (h) and an LSP or to a Z boson and an LSP, leading to hh, hZ, and ZZ states with missing transverse energy (E-T(miss)). A second aspect is chargino-neutralino pair production, leading to hW states with E-T(miss). The decays of a Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair, to a photon pair, and to final states with leptons are considered in conjunction with hadronic and leptonic decay modes of the Z and W bosons. No evidence is found for supersymmetric particles, and 95% confidence level upper limits are evaluated for the respective pair production cross sections and for neutralino and chargino mass values

    Influence of type of aluminium stearate on triboelectrification of dry-coated surfaces of functionalised glass beads

    Triboelectrification of powders and grains is deleterious in a large number of manufacturing operations, due to its adverse effect on process consistency and reliability. To mitigate it, charge neutralisers are commonly employed. However, their selection is often based on trial and error. This study is conducted to systematically examine the influence of the ionic polarity strength of a charge neutraliser, specifically aluminium stearate (AlSt), on charge transfer. AlSt has three types with different numbers of stearate chains, thereby influencing the electron exchange propensity of the molecule. The experiments involved surface-treated glass beads in the sieve size range of 90–150 µm (to make them hydrophilic by acid washing or hydrophobic by silanisation), then coated with the three forms of AlSt (mono-, di- and tri-) for charge mitigation. These coated beads were subjected to aerodynamic dispersion to cause triboelectrification, in order to quantitatively evaluate their charge neutralising effect. The experiments were conducted with four contact surfaces: stainless steel, copper, aluminium, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Both acid-washed and silanised glass beads exhibited negative charging against aluminium, copper and stainless steel (typically around 22–44 nC/g), but positive charging against PTFE (around 90 nC/g and 19 nC/g for acid-washed and silanised, respectively), despite having significantly different surface functional groups. A complex trend is observed for the effect of the amount of AlSt present on the surfaces, the type of AlSt and the surface treatment. A relatively good charge reduction behaviour was seen for AlSt-coated acid washed glass beads, but for silanised glass beads, AlSt coating actually increases their charge level
