The target of this phd thesis is to do an assessment about relative efficiency of a public company like «paradores de turismo de españa s.a.» from 1985 to 2004, and to verify if efficiency variations are linked or correlated to organizational changes implemented in the company during this period. Besides, a comparative evaluation of efficiencies of other private hotel business companies with different ownership structures is done. The methodology used to achieve this target is to submit the company «paradores de turismo de españa s.a.» to a deep study using economical efficiency and productivity indicators for the period from 1985 to 2004. Similarly these indicators have been applied for a comparative analysis to aforementioned private owned companies

After almost a decade of study, research, and dissemination in the field of philosophy for children (p4c), the University of the Azores has created a Master’s degree in Philosophy for Children. While it may appear to be just another university course of study in the academic field of philosophy, we believe that this Master’s is a case study in its own right, as it has allowed us to think about what p4c is capable of when it takes over the university. Not only has the Master’s degree helped shape p4c, but p4c has itself driven the development of the Master’s. Through this process, a different way of existing “within the university” emerges, revealing points worthy of attention that conventional academia does not always value. This article reflects on some of the ideas relating to this process and, without any pretension of establishing rules or claiming to be a finished product, offers some considerations that in our view constitute a turning point for the way people exist within the university. After experiencing a Master’s based upon p4c, neither the university nor philosophy itself can be understood in the same way as before. What is it about p4c, then, that makes it capable of transforming whatever it touches

Small, silent and (in)significant: childhood as a minoritarian experience of education

    Get PDF
It is possible to question and deconstruct the roots of some educational conceptions of childhood through approaches that find different ways of thinking about children, childhood, and even to experience education. Philosophy has contributed to some of these approaches by deconstructing and reconstructing the Western dominant ideas of rationality and its uses in education. In this chapter, I will approach these critical movements through disruptive provocations grounded in three concepts: small, silent, and (in)signi fi cant. These concepts are commonly associated with descriptive and normative images of childhood: what it is and is expected of children. By retaking these concepts, I will problematize the impact of Western rationality on the ways education has been thought and practiced.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

What are we saying when we say we listen to children’s voices?

    Get PDF
Listening to children is commonly associated with improving educational environments. Many educators believe that granting children more opportunities to express their voices can promote verbalisation skills and boost academic performance. In many schools, the pedagogy of the community of inquiry is adopted to meet such instrumental ends. It is also common to talk about the importance of children’s voices as a resource to improve the quality of life. Since children have thought-provoking perspectives on almost everything, their utterances are welcomed as novel, or enchanting. This stance fits with the promotion of creativity as a core competence for innovation and entrepreneurship in neoliberal societies. Concepts such as ‘inclusion’ and ‘rights’ have permeated discourses about childhood in a striking and unquestioned way. These words have become popular slogans in movements advocating for children and their right to participation. Discourses on listening and voice often reproduce an adultism, rationalist bias in educational relationships. What do we ask children? What do we hear in their answers? Do we really acknowledge that children have a voice of their own? Or are we just listening to what endorses our own experiences? What if using the words ‘voice’ and ‘listen’ is not enough (Lundy, 2007)? Should we return to those very same words?info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A note on prediction bias for state space models with estimated parameters

    Get PDF
This paper aims to discuss some problems on state space models with estimated parameters. While existing research focus on the prediction mean squared error, this work presents some results on bias propagation into forecast and filter predictions when the mean vector of the state is taking with an estimation bias, namely, non recursive analytical expression for them. In particular, it is discussed the impact of mean bias in invariant state space models

A Periodic State Space Model to Monthly Long-term Temperature Data

This work presents a periodic state space model to model monthly temperature data. Additionally, some issues are discussed, as the parameter estimation or the Kalman filter recursions adapted to a periodic model. This framework is applied to monthly long-term temperature time series of Lisbon

Dynamic linear modeling of homogenized monthly temperature in Lisbon

    Get PDF
This chapter focuses on the statistical modeling of the homogenized monthly average temperature data of Lisbon from 1856 to 2008. An exploratory analysis was performed using linear regression models which indicates the need of considering the temporal dependency and some flexibility in the trend modeling. In order to incorporate the properties of the data it was adopted a dynamic linear models with a fixed effect component. The model was fitted by a two-step procedure which combines the least squares method and the maximum likelihood estimation in the state space framework. The results indicated an average increase of the homogenized monthly temperature in Lisbon in about 0.427oC per century, between 1856 to 2008. Additionally, smoother predictions of the stochastic slopes indicated that the rise of temperature moderately changes according to the month, higher linear increases occurred in the winter months and lower increases occurred in the summer months

A Mixed-effect State Space Model to Environmental Data

This work presents some common issues in the statistical analysis of time series of environmental area. The discussion and the presentation of solutions is raised by the study of a time series of the oxygen concentration variable in a water quality monitoring site in the river Vouga hydrological basin in Portugal. Issues such as trends, seasonality, temporal correlation and detection of change points are addressed
