    Get PDF
Objective: This study aimed to analyze the major sequelae and complications related to COVID-19, as well as describing its associated sequelae and how they impact the quality of life of individuals. Methodology: To constitute this integrative review, we selected the papers 20 articles that met the following criteria: texts in the form of articles, theses or dissertations available in full, which address the theme in Portuguese and English, published in the last four years. Results and discussion: It was possible to show the advances of knowledge about COVID-19 and the sequelae that acute phase involvement can leave in the lives of individuals. In addition, the post-COVID-19 syndrome is characterized by sequelae left after the acute phase and that minimize the quality of individuals.  There are many persistent symptoms in this syndrome, such as: headache, persistent cough, post-exertion dyspnea, sleep-related disorders, anosmia, and vertigo. As the disease arose a few years ago, its sequelae are still being researched, so there is a great possibility of the existence of other post-covid clinical manifestations that will be studied and listed as new studies on this theme emerge. The sequelae of Covid-19 may impact the health of the disease-affected disease, both in the acute phase and after weeks. Conclusions: It is observed that the long-term manifestations are diverse and that symptoms vary from respiratory to neurological and there are changes in mental health.  The sequelae of Covid-19 interfere in quality of life and make it difficult to perform daily activities and consequently affect productivity.

Risk factors associated with death in Brazilian children with severe dengue: a case-control study

    Get PDF
Objective: The purpose of this case-control study was to evaluate risk factors associated with death in children with severe dengue. Methods: The clinical condition of hospitalized patients with severe dengue who died (cases, n = 18) was compared with that of hospitalized patients with severe dengue who survived (controls, n = 77). The inclusion criteria for this study were age under 13 years; hospital admission in São Luis, northeastern Brazil; and laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of dengue. Results: Severe bleeding (hemoptysis), a defining criterion for dengue severity, was the factor most strongly associated with death in our study. We also found that epistaxis and persistent vomiting, both included as warning signs in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of dengue, were strongly associated with death. No significant association was observed between any of the laboratory findings and death. Conclusions: The finding that epistaxis and persistent vomiting were also associated with death in children with severe dengue was unexpected and deserves to be explored in future studies. Because intensive care units are often limited in resource-poor settings, any information that can help to distinguish patients with severe dengue with a higher risk to progress to death may be crucial

The World Health Organization has publicly affirmed the existence of a global emergency caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus causing high rates of death and morbidity. Strategies for controlling the infection began to be developed, including vaccines manufactured by different nations worldwide. This work aimed to carry out an updated literature review on the vaccines available against Covid-19, their mechanisms and effectiveness. A bibliographic survey was carried out in the PubMed, LILACS and SciELO databases, using the following descriptors: Vaccines; COVID-19; Pandemic. The most used immunizers in Brazil were ChAdOx1-S/nCoV-19 [recombinant] (AstraZeneca), CoronaVac (Butantan), Bnt162b2 (BioNTech/Pfizer) and Ad.26.COV2.S (Janssen Pharma). The studies concluded that different mechanisms of action were used to manufacture the vaccines and all were effective, including the new variants, despite the existence of some adverse reactions and contraindications, the benefits of the vaccines outweigh their risks. BACKGROUND: As global initiatives increase patient access to surgical treatments, there remains a need to understand the adverse effects of surgery and define appropriate levels of perioperative care. METHODS: We designed a prospective international 7-day cohort study of outcomes following elective adult inpatient surgery in 27 countries. The primary outcome was in-hospital complications. Secondary outcomes were death following a complication (failure to rescue) and death in hospital. Process measures were admission to critical care immediately after surgery or to treat a complication and duration of hospital stay. A single definition of critical care was used for all countries. RESULTS: A total of 474 hospitals in 19 high-, 7 middle- and 1 low-income country were included in the primary analysis. Data included 44 814 patients with a median hospital stay of 4 (range 2-7) days. A total of 7508 patients (16.8%) developed one or more postoperative complication and 207 died (0.5%). The overall mortality among patients who developed complications was 2.8%. Mortality following complications ranged from 2.4% for pulmonary embolism to 43.9% for cardiac arrest. A total of 4360 (9.7%) patients were admitted to a critical care unit as routine immediately after surgery, of whom 2198 (50.4%) developed a complication, with 105 (2.4%) deaths. A total of 1233 patients (16.4%) were admitted to a critical care unit to treat complications, with 119 (9.7%) deaths. Despite lower baseline risk, outcomes were similar in low- and middle-income compared with high-income countries. CONCLUSIONS: Poor patient outcomes are common after inpatient surgery. Global initiatives to increase access to surgical treatments should also address the need for safe perioperative care. STUDY REGISTRATION: ISRCTN5181700

Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science. In the future, humanity can benefit greatly by nurturing the grassroots communities now collectively capable of generating unique, long-term understanding of Earth's most precious forests.Additional co-authors: Susan Laurance, William Laurance, Francoise Yoko Ishida, Andrew Marshall, Catherine Waite, Hannsjoerg Woell, Jean-Francois Bastin, Marijn Bauters, Hans Beeckman, Pfascal Boeckx, Jan Bogaert, Charles De Canniere, Thales de Haulleville, Jean-Louis Doucet, Olivier Hardy, Wannes Hubau, Elizabeth Kearsley, Hans Verbeeck, Jason Vleminckx, Steven W.
